What's New in WoW Forever
Classic updates explained clearly
Convenience, visuals, and progression
🕑 15 Minutes: Start time
⏳ ETA: Flexible

WoW Forever’s beta introduces far more than new class content. Blizzard has also rebuilt or modernized many parts of the Classic experience, including bags, banks, combat resources, PvP progression, raid information, graphics, accessibility options, and the user interface. The result is still built around Classic-style progression, but with considerably more convenience and several systems that will feel familiar to Retail players.

This guide summarizes the major changes currently visible or announced for the beta, along with the practical consequences for questing, professions, PvP, raiding, and everyday gameplay.

Inventory and Character Management

Dedicated reagent bag slot

WoW Forever adds a dedicated reagent bag slot. Bags designed for professions, such as herbalism bags, can be placed there instead of occupying one of your regular bag slots.

This is particularly useful for gathering-focused characters. In original Classic, a profession bag often felt inefficient unless it was filled almost entirely with the relevant materials. The dedicated slot allows you to keep additional standard storage without giving up the benefits of a profession bag.

Some special-purpose bags still appear to use normal inventory space. Quivers cannot be placed in the reagent slot, and soul shard bags are also expected to remain in regular bag slots.

Combined bags and item sorting

You can switch to a combined bag view directly from the inventory. The interface also allows you to assign item categories to specific bags, helping organize materials, equipment, consumables, and other items automatically.

This replaces much of the basic functionality traditionally provided by inventory add-ons. To make the most of it:

  • Keep your profession bag assigned to gathering materials.
  • Use separate bags for equipment, consumables, and general items.
  • Switch to the combined view when you need to search across your entire inventory.

Larger banks and currency storage

Base bank storage has been increased substantially. The standard bank provides 48 slots before additional purchases, compared with the much smaller starting capacity in original Vanilla.

This extra space is important because WoW Forever is expected to include new equipment, profession materials, trinkets, and items connected to specific zones. Characters will have more reasons to store items rather than immediately vendoring or destroying them.

Currencies also have their own tab on the character information screen. Instead of carrying every currency as a physical item, you can view and keep them there without filling your bags.

Built-in equipment manager

The game includes an equipment manager. Equip the items you want to use for a particular activity, save the set with a name, and swap back to it whenever necessary.

Useful equipment sets might include:

  • A standard damage or healing set.
  • A defensive set for solo content or tanking.
  • A gathering set.
  • A resistance or situational set.
  • A PvP set separate from your raid equipment.

UI and Quality-of-Life Updates

Improved stat explanations

The character screen provides considerably more information than the original Vanilla interface. It explains how stats affect areas such as defense, hit, and critical strike chance instead of leaving players to rely entirely on external guides or theorycrafting.

Weapon skill information has also been expanded. The skills tab explains how your performance changes against raid-level bosses, including the effects of hit, critical strikes, and glancing blows.

This should make gearing decisions easier, especially for players who do not already know the complicated formulas behind Classic combat. Before choosing between two items, check the detailed stat information rather than judging the item only by its primary attributes.

Retail-style auction house

WoW Forever uses a Retail-style auction house rather than the original Classic auction interface. Instead of purchasing one listed stack at a time, you can enter the quantity you want and buy the available items matching that request.

For example, buying a large amount of a crafting material can be handled through one order rather than a long series of individual purchases. This removes much of the need for an auction house add-on and makes bulk shopping significantly faster.

The new system is more convenient, although players who prefer the appearance of the original Classic auction house may find the interface less nostalgic.

Calendar and quest log changes

An in-game calendar is available from the upper-right portion of the interface. It can be used to track holiday events, PvP activities, and lockouts.

The quest log has also been expanded from 20 slots to 40. This gives questers more flexibility when moving between zones or collecting objectives for later completion. You will not need to abandon quests as quickly when your route takes you through several areas.

More built-in interface tools

The advanced interface settings include several features that traditionally required separate add-ons:

  • A mouseover modifier can be enabled for spells without creating individual macros.
  • A cooldown manager can track offensive cooldowns, defensive abilities, and racial abilities.
  • A damage meter is available for performance tracking.
  • A swing timer can help hunters and other classes that depend on auto-attack timing.
  • A diminishing returns tracker is being developed.

These options should be checked before installing add-ons. Some players may still prefer third-party tools, but many common convenience features are now included in the base client.

Gamepad and ping support

Gamepad support allows players to perform relaxed activities such as gathering without using a keyboard and mouse. It may also be useful when playing away from a normal desktop setup or during long periods of downtime.

The game also includes a ping system. Players can mark locations or points of interest, indicate where to attack, highlight loot, and draw attention to objectives. In group content, a ping can communicate an urgent problem faster than a voice call or typed message.

Combat and Progression Changes

Reduced base spell damage

Many basic spells deal substantially less damage than their equivalents in original Classic. For example, a high-rank Shadow Bolt in WoW Forever can deal damage closer to a lower-rank Shadow Bolt from the original game.

This does not necessarily mean casters will be weaker overall. Additional spell damage is expected to appear on gear at lower levels, so equipment will contribute more heavily to total damage. The practical lesson is that early gearing choices may matter more than they did in Vanilla.

Do not assume that a familiar spell rank will perform exactly as it did in Classic. Read the spell tooltips, compare your character’s actual numbers, and pay closer attention to spell damage on equipment.

Modern resource regeneration

The old server-tick behavior has been replaced with a more modern resource regeneration system.

One important consequence is that techniques based on timing an action around a server tick no longer work in the same way. Drink walking, for example, cannot be optimized by using water at a carefully timed tick to recover mana.

Energy regeneration for rogues and druids has also changed. Rather than receiving 20 energy at each server tick, energy regenerates smoothly at one point every 0.1 seconds. This is closer to the system used in later versions of the game.

The new system makes regeneration feel more consistent, but players who enjoyed tick-based optimization will need to adjust their habits.

Warnings before world refreshes

The game can warn you before a world refresh caused by layering technology. The warning provides approximately five minutes to move to a safer position or refresh immediately.

This is intended to prevent sudden displacement into a dangerous area, such as a dungeon filled with hostile enemies. Treat the warning as a reminder to finish your current interaction, leave combat if possible, and find a safe location before accepting the refresh.

PvP System and Battlegrounds

Seasonal PvP ranking

The original honor ranking system has been replaced with a seasonal progression model. Players earn honor through PvP, increase their rank, and unlock additional rewards associated with the active season.

The new system does not use the same weekly calculations, rank decay, or server-wide competition for the highest honor totals. It is designed around personal progression:

  1. Participate in PvP activities.
  2. Earn honor.
  3. Increase your seasonal rank.
  4. Unlock and purchase the rewards available for that season.

Seasonal rewards may include PvP equipment, cosmetics, and progression toward mounts or similar rewards. When a new season begins, players are expected to progress through that season’s reward track rather than relying on the previous season’s rank.

This approach should make PvP more accessible to players who do not want to commit to the extreme grind associated with the original rank 14 system.

Battleground adjustments

Blizzard has indicated that battlegrounds will be reviewed so players have more reasons to participate in different objectives instead of repeatedly rushing toward the end of Alterac Valley or following one dominant honor route.

The exact changes were not fully detailed, but the stated goal is to make battleground participation more varied and worthwhile. WoW Forever will also include one new battleground.

No rated PvP or arena

Rated PvP is not planned for WoW Forever at this stage. There are also no current plans for arena or organized one-versus-one dueling tournaments.

The PvP structure will therefore focus on the seasonal ranking system, battlegrounds, and the new battleground rather than a separate rated ladder.

Visual and World Updates

New loading screen artwork

Different zones now feature new loading screen artwork. These screens provide more visual identity as you travel between areas and reinforce the distinction between the game’s regions.

Dynamic lighting and water effects

WoW Forever includes upgraded lighting and dynamic visual effects. The difference between day and night is more pronounced, and some zones have a darker or more atmospheric appearance than they did in the original game.

Torches and other light-producing items can also benefit from the updated lighting. This may be especially noticeable in role-playing situations or when using cosmetic combinations designed around light and shadow.

Water effects have received a major update as well. Certain areas now feature visible waves that better match their surroundings. Additional weather effects such as snow, rain, or sandstorms would complement these systems, but they were not confirmed as part of the current changes.

Character models and NPC interactions

The new Skyborn race has a neutral relationship with both the Horde and the Alliance. Character creation includes both standard-definition and high-definition model options, allowing players to choose the visual style they prefer.

The skeletons used by the standard and high-definition models are the same. Players who are highly familiar with the original models may notice small differences, but the standard models remain available for those who want a more traditional Classic appearance.

When you select an NPC, your character can turn their head toward that NPC, while the NPC also looks toward your character. This small animation adds more life to conversations and interactions.

Guilds and Social Features

Guild bank

A guild bank is present in the beta and is expected to be available from launch. Combined with the expanded personal bank, it gives guilds a much better way to organize shared materials and equipment.

Guild leaders should establish clear rules before filling the bank. Useful categories include crafting materials, consumables, raid supplies, leveling equipment, and items reserved for specific members.

First and last names

Characters can have both a first name and a last name. This is particularly notable for role-players and may also help with identity in a realm-less environment, where finding an available name can otherwise be difficult.

No cross-faction gameplay

Cross-faction gameplay is not planned. Horde and Alliance characters will remain separated for group play and related activities.

Players who want to raid or complete group content together should therefore coordinate their faction choice before committing to a server community or guild.

Raid, Dungeon, and Add-on Rules

Boss loot hidden until discovery

Boss loot will remain hidden until it is looted on your realm. Players will not have a complete list of boss drops available before entering the raid.

This changes how groups prepare for progression. Raid leaders and players will need to record discoveries as bosses are defeated, and early raids may involve genuine experimentation rather than following a fully established best-in-slot list.

Raid sizes and difficulty structure

Each raid tier will have a 10-player and a 20-player option. Not every tier will include a 40-player version. Some 40-player content may instead be reserved for specific large encounters or limited raid formats.

There will be one difficulty for raid and dungeon content. WoW Forever will not use a structure with normal, heroic, and mythic versions of the same content or several parallel item-upgrade paths.

The intended progression is straightforward: complete the content, defeat the boss, and obtain the best version of the item available from that encounter.

No dungeon journal

A dungeon journal will not be included. Players will need to learn encounters through exploration, community knowledge, testing, and in-game experience.

Because boss loot is also hidden until discovered, early groups should take notes during progression. Recording abilities, positioning requirements, and item drops will help your guild build its own reference material.

Modern add-on API

Add-ons will use the modern client API. Blizzard has indicated that add-ons will be subject to greater restrictions than they were in original Classic, particularly when they attempt to automate raid decisions or perform too many actions for the player.

Raid encounters are expected to be considerably simpler than modern Retail encounters, but add-on authors and progression guilds should still expect limitations around automation. Use the built-in interface tools where possible and avoid relying on add-ons to make every combat decision automatically.

Economic and Account Policies

GDKP remains banned

GDKP runs remain prohibited. In this loot system, players bid in-game gold for items, and the collected gold is distributed among the raid at the end.

Blizzard’s stated concerns are that GDKP can weaken guild and social structures while encouraging gold buying. Players should therefore prepare for conventional loot systems instead, such as master looter arrangements, group loot rules, or other methods agreed upon by the raid.

Hard reserves may still exist, as they are difficult to eliminate without a personal loot system, but GDKP will not be an accepted alternative.

Severe penalties for gold buying

Blizzard has indicated that gold buying will receive harsher penalties. Players caught purchasing gold may receive a permanent ban rather than a warning or a minor punishment.

Do not buy gold, participate in suspicious transactions, or accept unexplained transfers from unknown players. Keeping your gold income tied to ordinary gameplay is the safest way to protect your account.

Practical Beta Checklist

When testing WoW Forever, use the following checklist to understand how the new systems affect your character:

  1. Place a profession bag in the dedicated reagent slot.
  2. Configure bag categories so materials and equipment sort into the correct locations.
  3. Save separate equipment sets for combat, gathering, and PvP.
  4. Review the expanded character stat information before replacing gear.
  5. Test spell damage rather than assuming original Classic values still apply.
  6. Adjust to smooth energy and resource regeneration instead of relying on server ticks.
  7. Check the calendar for events, PvP activities, and lockouts.
  8. Configure the built-in cooldown manager, damage meter, and swing timer if needed.
  9. Decide whether you prefer standard-definition or high-definition character models.
  10. Choose your faction carefully, since cross-faction gameplay is not planned.
  11. Record raid mechanics and boss loot as your group discovers them.
  12. Avoid GDKP and never purchase gold.

Overall Takeaways

WoW Forever keeps the recognizable Classic philosophy of meaningful progression, straightforward dungeon and raid rewards, and faction identity, while removing many of the interface limitations that players traditionally solved with add-ons.

The most important changes are the larger inventory and bank systems, built-in equipment management, improved stat explanations, the revised auction house, smooth resource regeneration, seasonal PvP ranks, modern interface tools, and the updated visual presentation.

Players should also prepare for a different endgame environment. GDKP remains banned, gold buying carries severe risks, boss loot will need to be discovered, raid difficulty will remain simple rather than split across multiple modes, and there will be no cross-faction or rated PvP systems at launch based on the current information.

Because these details come from the beta and ongoing announcements, some systems may still be refined before the planned November 4 launch. The safest approach is to treat the beta as a chance to test the new interface, learn the progression rules, and decide which conveniences improve your Classic experience without replacing the social and exploratory parts of the game.
