Razor Meta Overview

Razor currently sits at the highest win rate in all of Dota 2. His strength comes from a combination of recent buffs to his E and a core item build that has become exceptionally strong. In the pro scene, Razor is a first-phase pick or ban for most teams, so you rarely see him because of how dominant he is.

  • The same build works in mid, offlane, and carry—one skill and item path fits all three core roles.
  • The hero is relatively easy to play and the build is straightforward, making him a strong choice for pubs.

Why Guardian Greaves Is Broken on Razor

The build revolves around Guardian Greaves. For core heroes, this item provides an early dispel and solves two of Razor’s biggest weaknesses: sustain and mana.

  • Dispel: Razor is kitable and can die to silences or roots. Being able to dispel an Underlord root or similar control can decide team fights.
  • Sustain: Razor has no HP regen and no lifesteal, but he needs to be tanky to run in with Facet Thunderhead, proc his E, and use his ult and Link effectively.
  • Mana: The hero is mana-hungry; Greaves builds from Arcane Boots and gives him the pool and active he needs to fight and farm.

Other heroes that abuse Guardian Greaves in a similar way include Lina, Storm Spirit, and Razor. For Razor, the active heal and dispel after a fight let him recover quickly and stay on the map.

Laning Stage and Skill Build

In the laning stage, Razor is straightforward. At level one, you usually skill Plasma Field (Q). The ability is mana-intensive, so only in very free matchups—for example versus a weak melee like Spectre in the offlane—you can consider skilling Static Link (W) at level one.

  • Link doubles in drain rate at level two, so kills often become possible from level three with boots.
  • Static the wave and farm; versus heroes like Underlord, they will often leave lane early to jungle.

Starting Items and Early Game

Typical start: Magic Stick, three Branches, Fairy Fire, and Circlet. Upgrade into Wand, then Boots. If the lane is hard and you need to commit to all-in fights, a Wraith Band can help; in free lanes you can skip it. After boots, prioritize mana: Raindrops and Sage’s Mask are standard, then build into Mekansm. Do not skip Wand or Raindrops—Razor often finds himself low HP and needs the burst and regen to survive and turn fights.

Skill Order and Talents

Max Plasma Field (Q) first. Put points in Storm Surge (E) next; it was heavily buffed (strike chance and cooldown improved). During your ult, strike cooldown is reduced and chance is doubled, so E procs much more often and is the main reason Razor is top meta. Maxing Link is rare on this tank build. At level 10, both talents are strong: the Plasma Field slow is great, but the spell lifesteal talent fits the 1v9 carry style. The level 15 strength talent is extremely strong on a hero stacking auras and tank items.

Item Build and Progression

After Mekansm, complete Guardian Greaves. Do not hesitate to use a clarity when farming; Razor has heavy mana issues until Greaves. From there, the build branches into aura and utility items.

Core and Aura Items

The most common follow-ups are Pipe of Insight or Crimson Guard—often you end up with both plus Greaves. Against heavy magic damage, Pipe is the choice; against physical damage (e.g. Terror Blade), Crimson is the answer. BKB is an option when the enemy has mixed damage or heroes like Clockwerk where you need to run out of Cogs. Later, Manta Style gives a second dispel and helps versus Cogs and silences; Sange and Yasha is often better in general because it amplifies regen and pairs well with Greaves, Pipe, and Crimson. Shiva’s Guard is a solid late option versus physical carries. Nullifier no longer purges Greaves, Pipe, or Crimson, which makes this tank build much safer in the late game.

Farming and Ult Usage

Razor’s ult is one of his best farming tools. Use it off cooldown when the map is calm. Only hold it if the enemy is about to dive your tier one and it is coming back soon. When farming camps with Plasma Field, stand at max range—the edge of the ability deals the most damage—and try to hit two camps at once to save mana and time. You cannot farm ancients efficiently without your ult; use it to accelerate and then join fights when it is back up.

Team Fight and Positioning

Before you have Greaves and at least one aura item, play defensively. Razor’s base HP is low and he dies easily even with Mekansm. Once you have Greaves plus Pipe or Crimson—or all three tank items—you can frontline and take contact.

  • Avoid being initiated on before you have multiple items. Prefer to go in yourself, get E procs, pop Greaves, then kite out.
  • When linking, usually link the target in front of you and stick on them; at max Link in the late game, try to link the enemy carry when possible.
  • After a fight, the Greaves active heals you to full quickly. The cooldown is short; you can also use it for mana when farming in a safe area.

In fights, do not sprint into five heroes blindly. Wait for an opportunity, then commit. With Greaves, Pipe, and Crimson you can stand in the middle of the fight, proc Storm Surge, and let your auras and items do the work while your team follows up.

Matchups and Draft

Razor excels versus melee heroes. In mid, safe lane, or offlane, look for melee matchups—you can dominate most of them if you do not overextend. Underlord is one of the worst matchups into Razor. Muerta is strong against him because she can push him away during Link. Clockwerk is a direct answer to Guardian Greaves heroes: Razor cannot purge Cogs or Battery Assault. When playing carry Razor, the build is still valid if your offlaner is greedy (e.g. Wraith King with Radiance); you provide the tank and control while they scale.

Conclusion

Razor’s Guardian Greaves–based tank build is currently one of the strongest and most flexible core builds in Dota 2. It scales from the mid game into the late game, works in mid, offlane, and carry, and relies on a clear item path: Greaves into Pipe and Crimson, with Manta or Sange and Yasha as situational choices. Master the laning phase, farm with your ult, hit your aura timings, and play with discipline in fights—link the right target, use Greaves to dispel and heal, and let your tankiness and Storm Surge carry the game.
