Hello, Guys, It’s Librarian Husky. Inside of today’s article, we delve into the fundamentals of drafting in competitive play. This series aims to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the drafting process.

Understanding the Ban Phase

To begin, let’s focus on the crucial ban phase, a strategic element influenced by the coin toss. The winner of the toss gains the coveted first pick advantage, while the losing side secures the sixth pick. This distinction becomes pivotal in scenarios where the last pick offers a strategic advantage by allowing a responsive counter to the opponent’s composition.

When you find yourself with the first pick, the strategic ban becomes paramount. Maintaining a cheat sheet for each season can aid in identifying the top-tier Brawlers that necessitate banning. For instance, champions like Juju often find themselves on the ban list due to their impact on the battlefield. Conversely, if you hold the first pick position, strategizing bans against potent late-pick Brawlers such as assassins or throwers becomes imperative. Tailoring ban strategies to your team composition and countering potential threats can significantly influence the outcome of the draft.

However, if you are positioned as the second or third pick, adapting your approach is essential. Anticipating the opponent’s initial pick and formulating counter strategies present a challenge, especially when faced with the vast pool of Brawlers available. Opting for versatile and well-rounded champions or reserving strong late-pick options can provide flexibility and strategic depth to your draft. Avoiding early selection of easily countered assassins can prevent your opponents from gaining a strategic advantage. Prioritizing the selection of Brawlers with adaptable playstyles can enhance your team’s overall draft strategy.

In the subsequent sections, we will explore advanced drafting strategies and delve deeper into the nuances of team composition and counterplay. Stay tuned for more insights into mastering the art of drafting in competitive gameplay.

Drafting Strategies

So if you’re fourth or fifth pick in general, this is pretty good, but you’ve got to take into consideration a few things. The first thing you’ve got to consider is that the opponent has last pick. So one of these two Brawlers has to be good against a potential last pick threat. For example, if your two teammates have already picked Nogas and Janet, those are two low DPS Brawlers. That means you just have to pick an anti-tank or something good against throwers. It’s hard to always find the perfect Brawler, but the most common theme is an assassin or a tank as a late pick to ensure your draft is well-rounded and not easily countered.

If you’re sixth pick, in my opinion, this will always be the best pick in the draft because you get to see your two teammates’ picks and the three opponents’ picks. With so many Brawlers in the game, there’s normally a Brawler that can counter two of the three Brawlers available. This will depend on your knowledge of the meta and the game. Common counters include throwers, tanks, and assassins.

Controllers can also be effective last picks. As you play more ranked matches, you’ll learn what makes a good late pick. React to your teammates’ choices; for instance, if your teammate selects an assassin early on, expect opponents to counter with anti-tanks. You can support the assassin with a healer or try to predict and counter the anti-tanks with a different controller.

Let’s delve into Brawler classes. While the in-game classes are decent, creating your own classes or analyzing Brawlers individually can be more effective from a strategic standpoint. First off, we have the snipers. Snipers typically have the longest ranges and shoot single projectiles. They can be countered by various strategies, such as throws or Brawlers with gadgets that can absorb their shots like Charlie or spiders.

Brawler Types and Strategies

Throwers in Brawl Stars are known for Their exceptional range advantage, making them most effective on open maps. These Brawlers can easily throw their attacks over walls, making them particularly potent in certain maps with unbreakable barriers. Notably, Brawlers like Prime Larry and Lori pose significant challenges due to their ability to attack while others cannot retaliate. Throwers excel in game modes like Knockout and Bounty, while some are equally formidable in Brawl Ball and Hot Zone matches. Their presence in the draft phase can be intimidating due to their unique abilities and strategic advantages.

Anti-tank Brawlers, as the name suggests, are specialized in countering tanky and assassin-type opponents. Equipped with gadgets or supers tailored for disrupting tank strategies, these Brawlers are commonly deployed on grassy terrains. While some anti-tank Brawlers like Ketta and Mazy boast extended ranges, most are best suited for bush-covered maps where they can capitalize on their abilities effectively.

Tanks, characterized by their high health pools, are adept at dominating specific maps by their sheer durability and ability to sustain heavy damage. These Brawlers excel in close-quarters combat scenarios, often requiring significant resources to eliminate from play. Their presence can be game-changing, especially in confined, bushy landscapes where they can leverage their robust offensive capabilities.

Assassins in Brawl Stars exhibit a blend of flexibility and high damage output, excelling in one-on-one engagements against squishier opponents. Brawlers like Daryl and Carl exemplify this hybrid playstyle, combining durability with swift takedowns to disrupt enemy strategies effectively. Their proficiency in eliminating vulnerable targets makes them formidable assets in various game modes, where quick eliminations can shift the tide of battle.

Controllers, true to their name, specialize in area control tactics, often utilizing deployable assets like turrets to influence the battlefield. For instance, Brawlers such as Jesse can establish a zone of control with their turrets, forcing opponents to address the threat even if the turret is not actively engaging targets. These Brawlers excel in dictating engagements and manipulating the flow of battle through strategic placement and control of key areas.

Brawler Classes Overview

So they’re just able to at least, you know, cover a certain area of the map, bow mines, for example, Mr. P. It’s just Squeak with his normal shot, Janet’s just good at just keeping zoning the opponent’s back. You know, Jee constantly chipping the opponents. There’s just small things like. The next class is support. So of course, support is going to be typically your kind of healer rulers or they’re going to allow certain Brawlers to thrive a lot more. So I’ve actually put Barry in the support category. Of course, he’s a thrower healer, but he’s not your typical thrower. You typically use your attacks on your teammates and not to kill the opponent. So that’s why I put him in a support category. Of course, he’s often used with his super a lot.

That’s where you get the most value. You know, Max is some support Brawler. I know you can be a standalone Brawler as well, but it’s all about the super with Max and giving your teammates that kind of level with the speed. You know, Gray, again, with the teleport, normally he’s played with a tank, for example. You know, Kit, of course, can be an assassin, but primarily use Kit to jump on top of a tank and then to go in. And the final class, I’ve gone for DPS. So this is kind of like an anti-tank, but at the same time, primarily, it’s just if you just really need that damage to just take down some tanks or just to ruin the high safe, for example. So you got a couple of those, you got like 8-bit, you’ve got C, but just pure damage, you’ve got the likes of Ruko that can kind of do everything, a bit of an anti-tank, a bit of something else, got Lola as well, you know, Pearl again, a lot of damage, Spike, a lot of damage. All of these Brawlers just have high damage and high burst potential.

Rock-Paper-Scissors Meta Strategy

So you see by this quick diagram, you’ve got snipers, throws, and support they’re going to be countering your anti-tank DPS Brawlers. And of course, anti-tank DPS, they’re going to be countering your tanks and assassins, and then your tanks and assassins are going to be countering your snipers, throwers, and support Brawlers.

For the most part, of course, there’s ways of winning interactions with super hyperchargers gadgets, etc., but it’s just your general consensus of the meta and how the game works from my perspective anyway. You’ve always got to understand this and this could just be a good way of creating like a really good composition. So now let’s take a look at the classes and how they’re actually counted for the most part. So first off, we have anti-tanks. So anti-tanks just think of straight away like Ketta, we think of like Elle, etc. So they’re going to be countered for the most part by controllers.

Countering Anti-Tanks and Throwers

Those are the Brawlers I look to a lot of the time to counter these anti-tanks. Penny, those other types of Brawlers. And then throwers, although they’re not like the biggest counter out there, throwers will be pretty annoying for them. In general, most of the time these anti-tanks won’t have W breaks all over the time, etc. So throwers can be pretty decent against them. Snipers are in general pretty good against anti-tanks. You know, for example, if the map is pretty open, or if the map gets opened up to try and counter those tanks, well, snipers can then destroy the anti-tanks because of course they’ll outrange them. That’s just typical BL stars knowledge. Every outranges you, typically they’re going to have the better matchup. And then finally, open maps. So open maps will counter anti-tanks because most of the time they kind of have like medium range. So typically look for those snipers on open maps.

Assassins are really good in one versus one matchups. A lot of the time, you know, like pinches can be really useful. The first part, of course, is going to be anti-tank. Anti-tank are pretty much anti-assassins as well, but that’s a gadget, super that can defeat them. You’ve also just got pretty much DPS because some of these assassins have a lot of HP, like Buzz, Daryl, Carl, etc. So some quick burst damage will be able to just dispose of them pretty quickly or like Edgar, for example.

Countering Assassins

Tanks are really good into assassins because assassins, they like the squishier Brawlers. They can’t really beat tanks in that one versus one. Again, just think of Mortis. Mortis is just terrible into like Bull, terrible into like Jackie, etc. So tanks are really good. And then again, open maps. The reason being is because assassins are super, super limited in their range and they like to play on bushier maps. So open maps open up the map with wall breaker or just open maps in general are the biggest counters to them. Some counters to control Brawlers. The first one is going to be tanks. So the only thing is with tanks, of course, they will win the one versus one most of the time.

Controllers and Their Counters

Controllers in Brawl Stars face challenges against various brawler types. Tanks counter controllers due to their higher damage output, making it crucial to avoid feeding their supers. Assassins excel in one-on-one confrontations against controllers, swiftly taking them down. Throwers pose a threat as controllers often lack the mobility to reach them, leading to their turrets being easily destroyed. WO breakers capitalize on controllers’ limited range, exposing their defenses. Synergy between support brawlers and tanks with high health can overpower controllers lacking sufficient damage output.

Snipers and Their Weaknesses

Snipers in Brawl Stars struggle against tanks due to their slow reload speed, making them vulnerable in close combat situations. However, tanks are less common on open maps, providing snipers with an advantage. Assassins can outmaneuver snipers in one-on-one encounters, leveraging their mobility and close-range combat skills to secure victory. Some snipers possess crowd control abilities like knockbacks or slows, but against skilled assassins, they often fall short.

Counter Strategies Against Snipers and Support Brawlers

It’s just a majority of the time, you know, knockout and bounty, it’s pretty hard to get a kill on a sniper, but actually survive afterwards. So that’s why assassins are good into them, but pretty rare. It’s more like a hybrid assassin. Then you’ve got throwers. Of course, snipers are really typically squishy. There’s the other exception with like R.T. Gus with a shield, etc. But throwers, in general, should be able to handle snipers pretty well, especially for longer range throws like tick, for example.

You’ve also got bushy maps. So of course, bushy maps are a big counter to snipers because those tanks and other brawlers can sneak up close to them and close the gap. And snipers, of course, their biggest asset is being able to outrange everybody. So that’s just completely nullified with bushing maps. And then finally, support brawlers plus HP. Again, this synergy is just really good right now in hot zone and other situations. But the reason being, again, because snipers just have slow reload. So they just can’t kill them.

Next, we have the support brawlers. So of course, support brawlers are really used to support your team and for the heals or just for some kind of super synergy, etc. So for the most part, tanks will destroy support brawlers because you think these support brawlers, you think of Barry, you think of, you know, Barz, okay, but like Poco, Pam, they don’t have a lot of damage, right? They’re used to sustain your position on the map. So tanks can a lot of time just run through them, literally laugh at the damage they’re able to output. Assassins, again, really good. You think of like Edgar, jumping onto most of these brawlers, it just rips through them every single time.
