Brawl Stars Kenji Guide: Ultimate Tips, Tricks & Strategies for Maximum Success
Hello, guys, I’am Librarian Husky. Kenji, the sushi samurai, offers a unique gameplay experience that requires understanding his abilities for optimal performance. His trait allows him to regain health equal to 35% of the damage dealt, which is crucial for sustaining in battles. This feature enables him to stay aggressive and survive encounters effectively.
Mastering Kenji’s Gameplay
Moreover, Kenji’s main attack, dash and slash, combines a forward dash with a wide-sweeping slash, providing versatility in engaging enemies. Leveraging this sequence strategically can enhance mobility and positioning on the battlefield.
To fully utilize Kenji’s kit, players should capitalize on his dash ability to outmaneuver opponents and secure advantageous positions. The dash mechanic not only facilitates dodging incoming threats but also enables swift ball movement in Brawl Ball matches. By mastering the art of weaving between dashes and slashes, players can maximize Kenji’s damage output and charge his super ability promptly. This playstyle emphasizes close-quarters combat and rewards precision in targeting vulnerable foes.
When engaging with Kenji, it is essential to prioritize targets based on their threat level and proximity. Focusing on low-health or low-damage enemies allows Kenji to capitalize on his burst potential and eliminate key threats efficiently. Avoiding direct confrontations with high-damage brawlers like Shelly and El Primo is advisable, as their close-range capabilities can quickly overpower Kenji. Instead, target snipers and throwers to exploit their vulnerabilities and secure eliminations with calculated strikes.
To enhance your effectiveness with Kenji, it is recommended to avoid excessive auto-aiming, especially at a distance. Manual aiming ensures precise control over Kenji’s movements, preventing accidental misdirections or collisions with obstacles. Additionally, maintaining awareness of your surroundings and predicting enemy movements can significantly improve your decision-making during intense engagements. With Kenji’s fast reload speed, players can afford to be more aggressive in their approach, utilizing his abilities to dominate skirmishes and control the battlefield effectively.
Mastering Kenji’s Dash Mechanics
Now, like I said earlier, I love using the dash to move around the map, but I also love using it to cause pressure onto the enemies. Kenji has a very fast reload speed so you don’t have to be super wary of how much ammo you have. Just make sure you have enough ammo when engaging in combat. Now, I did touch on this subject a little bit earlier, but you kind of want to be making sure of which attack you have next. For example, if you need your dash to get closer to the enemies, make sure that attack is queued up next. If you’re in a bush and want to swipe at the enemies, make sure that attack is ready to go.
Then, with Kenji all over the meta right now because of his hypercharge, you got to be playing brawlers like Cordelius or Clansancy to counter brawlers like Kenji. Now, what’s something that brawlers like Otis, Clansson, Cornelius all have in common? They can either mute Kenji or do huge amounts of damage up close. I can low-key see these brawlers seeing a rise in play rate with Kenji being everywhere just because these are great counters to him. Also, another way to counter Kenji is just don’t group up when you’re pulling against him. You don’t want to give him easy opportunities to team whip you and your team when he’s using his super.
Now, speaking of Kenji’s super, let’s go and talk about his super slash shimi. With his super, Kenji throws a fish over obstacles, and when it lands, he quickly slashes twice across the spot where it landed in a cross pattern. Now, of course, double the damage will be dealt if the enem is hit by both of the slashes. And when the super is over, he returns back to where he was before activating his super.
Now, whenever using Kenji’s super, I always try to recommend to people hitting multiple targets if you can. Even though the most ideal situation is to hit targets at the origin of your super, being able to hit enemies that are caught anywhere in the X is a W in my book. 2,600 damage is nothing to joke about, but dealing that 5200 damage at max level is obviously what you need to be aiming for when using Kenji’s super. Now, what’s great about Kenji super is you can use it to hit enemies that are hiding behind walls. Since you can aim your super over walls, it can be a great way to catch enemies that are trying to run away and heal up.

I always thought of it as a Bonnie super, but this is obviously way better. Now, a tip that I do want to share about Kenji super is you don’t want to be autoing with it unless you are directly next to your target. Most of the time, if you’re a good distance away from your target, auto aiming your super will cause you to miss completely. However, if you are literally dashing on top of somebody, auto aiming your super will probably hit since well, the enemy is going to be right next to you.
Now, one of my favorite ways of using Kenji super is to use it as a way to escape death or a lot of incoming damage. I love to use my super when I’m about to die and can buy a little time and can buy a little bit more time to fluster the enemy team. It’s going to take time for people to learn how to play against Kenji. So, if you can use your super to disappear for a second, it may save your life. Now, if you want to be able to counter Kenji Subua, I recommend just watching where he ends up throwing his fish.
Strategies Against Kenji’s Super and Gadgets
I recommend running in either a horizontal or a vertical direction whenever you see Kenji’s fish in the air. Since the super will be used in an X shape, Kenji will be slashing diagonally. So, as long as you don’t move diagonally, you should be good to go when dodging his super. One of the best ways to counter Kenji when he’s using his super is to camp out where he used his super from. Standing where Kenji was last seen before using his super might surprise him and melt him down if you are using the right Brawler. Ensure you have enough ammo, a gadget, a super, or whatever you need to burst him down ASAP.
Moving on to Kenji’s gadgets, the first one to discuss is Dashi Dash. Activating this gadget causes all of Kenji’s attacks for the next 3 seconds to be his dash attack. This gadget is valuable in game modes like Brawl Ball, turning Kenji into a more agile fighter. Use this gadget for self-passing and dribbling to score goals efficiently. It maintains a consistent attack for the next 3 seconds, making it a favorite among Mortis mains for strategic gameplay.
In scenarios where quick map traversal is necessary, Dashi Dash proves incredibly useful. Use the gadget to swiftly reach any location during the match, aiding in respawning and supporting teammates. Maintaining pressure on opponents or closing the distance between you and your target are other effective uses. Additionally, Dashi Dash serves as an escape tool, allowing you to flee danger by dashing away like Mortis, dodging projectiles, or seeking safety behind obstacles. However, using this gadget for damage output puts you at a disadvantage due to the lower damage compared to Kenji’s standard attack. Be mindful of the trade-offs to optimize your gameplay.
Kenji’s Gadgets
But okay, that’s going to be it for Kenji‘s first gadget. Let’s going to talk about his second gadget, Hosam Maki healing. With this gadget, Kenji instantly recovers health for 50% of the damage taken over the last 3 seconds. When the gadget is ready, a red bar on Kenji’s health shows how much health you will recover when using the gadget.

Now, the last time we made our Kenji guide, this gadget was completely broken and was what shot Kenji into the S tier, but luckily is not as broken as it used to be. Now, with Hosamaki healing, you can escape death so many times and almost win any 1 v one engagement. If you’re dealing with enemies that can deal lots of damage close up, you can immediately use your gadget and gain all the health right back, which is pretty disgusting.
Now, an amateur mistake I always see with people using this gadget is they wait too long to go ahead and activate it. Think about it. If you took a huge hit of damage, it’s better to just activate the gadget and heal right back up. If you wait too long because you want to heal more, the damage you took prior might have been longer than 3 seconds ago, thus resulting in less healing than you think.
Now, whenever you’re playing a brawler, especially like Kenji, it’s important that you are really paying close attention to his health bar. Since your health bar can indicate how much you will heal when the gadget is ready, that should dictate when you should be using the gadget. If you can use it and gain back a huge part of your health, you might as well just use it so you’re back at a decent amount of health again.
Kenji’s Star Powers
But, okay, that’s going to be Kenji’s gadgets. Let’s going to talk about his star powers. But the first one I want to talk about is Study the Blade. With this star power, Kenji’s super slices range are increased by 30%.
Now, the great thing about this star part is it can be useful for you to cover more area with your super. Since your slices will be even longer, it might help you catch more enemies that think they’re not within your range anymore. Now, low key, there’s not really anything special that I can discuss about this star power since it’s pretty self-explanatory. But let’s be real here. This star power is not going to be better than his other star power, Nigi Nemesis.
Now, speaking of Kenji’s other star power, let’s go and talk about Nigi Nemesis. Right now with this star power, after not taking damage for 5 seconds, Kenji gains a special shield that reduces the next enemy projectile’s damage by 60%.
Now, kind of like Hosamaki healing, this star power used to be even more broken, but is definitely more tame now and not as broken as they used to be. This star power was so good because you could tank so many different things in the game and literally take no damage at all. By you tanking a high incoming attack from the enemy, this could save your teammate’s life for sure. by having the star power activated. This will allow you to play more freely since you will have this massive shoot to help you get closer to the enemies.
Kenji’s Star Power and Countering Strategies
Now, let’s say you’re camping inside of a bush. I really recommend taking advantage of that bush when you’re trying to surprise your target. This star power is great because if you’re hiding in a bush, the enemy isn’t going to see you. They won’t be expecting to deal less than 100 damage to you with their first attack. Despite not being as strong as before, it’s still effective at helping you stay alive. To counter this star power, play multi-projectile brawlers like Pam, Colt, or 8-Bit. Focus on dealing continuous damage to prevent the shield from activating.
Playing against Kenji’s hypercharge super requires caution. When activated, Kenji pulls enemies towards the center of his slashes, gaining speed, damage, and a shield boost. This ability makes him nearly unstoppable, especially in the current meta. Few brawlers can survive this onslaught, and Kenji can quickly charge up another super, making him a formidable opponent. His hypercharge is so potent that it might face a nerf soon. To maximize Kenji’s potential, use the Holamaki healing gadget, Nigi Nemesis star power, damage gear, and shield gear to enhance his damage output and survivability.
Kenji’s Hypercharge Super and Recommended Build
The hypercharge super pulls enemies towards Kenji, providing a speed, damage, and shield boost. This ability allows him to dominate the battlefield, making it challenging for opponents to escape or counter his attacks. Cycling through multiple hypercharge supers can overwhelm enemies, making Kenji a force to be reckoned with. The ease of charging up this super makes it a game-changer and a potential candidate for future nerfs. To optimize Kenji’s performance, equip the Holamaki healing gadget, Nigi Nemesis star power, damage gear, and shield gear, enabling him to deal more damage and withstand enemy assaults effectively.
Oni Kenchi Skin in Hypercharge
He possesses the remarkable Oni Kenchi skin. Take advantage and acquire the Hypercharge without hesitation. Exploit his power now as it is bound to face adjustments soon.
