Diablo 4 Update: Infernal Hordes Rebalance and the New Meta

Another Diablo 4 update just hit, bringing back the “Compass to Carnage” event and a few critical hotfixes. This isn’t just about new content; it’s a significant shift that forces us to re-evaluate our time investment in activities like Infernal Hordes and adjust our builds, especially if you were relying on some of the more… “creative” damage interactions.

The core issue for many of us has always been the grind – how much time do you sink into an activity for a worthwhile return? Infernal Hordes, historically, have been a hard sell for efficiency. But this update attempts to change that narrative, alongside tweaking some of the dominant builds. Let’s dig into what this really means for your daily D4 grind and your character’s progression.

The “Compass to Carnage” Event Breakdown

The Compass to Carnage event is back, running until May 26th, and it’s aimed squarely at making Infernal Hordes more appealing. The core changes are pretty straightforward:

Event Bonuses:

  • Increased Infernal Compasses: You’ll earn more of these during the event, which is essential for initiating Infernal Hordes runs.
  • Chaos Begets Chaos: Expect increased chaos waves during every Infernal Hordes run. This is the big one, as Chaos Waves are where the real Aether gains happen.

The promise here is more Aether and potentially better unique drops, making the activity feel less like a chore. Many players, myself included, largely ignored Infernal Hordes simply because they couldn’t compete with the raw efficiency of Nightmare Dungeons. We’ll see if these bonuses actually move the needle enough to justify the time commitment.

Diablo 4 Hotfixes: Nerfs and Buffs

Alongside the event, Blizzard pushed out a hotfix that addresses some key build interactions, showing they’re still keeping an eye on anything that breaks the game’s intended progression curve.

Key Hotfix Changes:

  • Blood Lance Nerf: This one was coming. Blood Lance, particularly with specific interactions, was doing far too much.
  • Warlock Eviscerate Nerf: Another one that was widely expected. This interaction had an infinite damage bug that could completely trivialize content. It’s fixed now, thankfully.
  • Ball Lightning Buff: Huge news for Sorcerers. Ball Lightning is now considered a Core Skill again. This re-enables a lot of scaling and legendary aspects that previously felt useless. This is a significant bump for an already strong build.

These adjustments mean a few builds will need a re-spec, while others, like Ball Lightning, are back in a major way. It’s the usual progression reality: theorycrafting perfect comps only works until the hotfix hammer drops. The infinite damage bugs are always a problem for overall game health, so those fixes are necessary, even if they derail some players’ current progression.

Infernal Hordes: Still a Time Sink, but With a Twist

The big question is, are Infernal Hordes finally worth it? My initial run, even without any points invested in the Infernal Hordes section of the War Plans, showed a significant increase in Chaos Waves. Before this event, getting even one Chaos Wave in a 10-wave run felt like a rare occurrence. Now, it seems closer to a 50% chance per wave, which completely changes the Aether accumulation rate.

We’re talking about almost 2,000 Aether from a single 10-wave run in about 10 minutes. That’s a huge boost. Compare that to a Nightmare Dungeon, which a good build can clear in sub-2 minutes for five Grim Favors. Infernal Hordes usually give five Grim Favors too, but the time investment was always the killer.

The event is definitely an incentive to revisit Hordes, especially if you have a mountain of Infernal Compasses gathering dust. The problem is still the raw time commitment; 10 minutes for Hordes compared to multiple Nightmare Dungeon runs in the same timeframe. But for Aether, the math might finally be shifting.

Rewards and Efficiency in the New Hordes

Beyond the increased Aether, the loot from Infernal Hordes is still a mixed bag. You get a good chunk of Obducite and Gem Fragments, plus some Legendary Seals (though still often Tier 5, making the chase for Mythics feel a bit more tedious). Uniques can drop, and I picked up a Tusk Helm with some solid cooldown reduction and resource generation, which isn’t bad for certain Barbarian builds.

Typical Infernal Hordes Loot (with Event):

  • Significantly increased Aether (my run yielded almost 2k).
  • Hellborne spawns for additional loot.
  • Obducite and Gem Fragments (around 9k materials per run).
  • Legendary Seals (often Tier 5, still chasing those Mythic 6s).
  • Chance for specific Unique items, potentially making it a viable (though slower) source for targeting certain pieces.

Realistically, if you’re trying to farm specific Uber Uniques or chase perfect legendary rolls, Nightmare Dungeons and the Pit are still probably faster. But if you’re desperate for Aether or trying to fill out your collection of specific uniques, this event makes Hordes a little less painful. The question is, how many runs can you stomach before the repetition sets in?

War Plans: Rethinking Your Investment

This event highlights a critical point: War Plans for Infernal Hordes. Most veteran players, myself included, have zero points invested there because the activity simply wasn’t efficient enough to warrant it. But with the “Chaos Begets Chaos” buff, it might be time to reconsider.

If the baseline for Chaos Waves is now much higher, investing a few initial points into the War Plans might push the rewards over the edge, potentially making it genuinely competitive with other endgame activities. This is something I’ll be testing and will share more on. It’s a common player frustration point that some progression systems feel completely ignored until an event forces them into the spotlight. Most groups just want to know the optimal path, and Infernal Hordes rarely offered one.

Current Build Meta: Ball Lightning, Barbarian, and Rogue

The hotfix impacts the meta significantly. While some builds get a deserved nerf for exploiting bugs, others rise. This is the constant dance of endgame MMOs – adapting to the patch notes and finding what truly works in the current environment.

The Ball Lightning Comeback

Ball Lightning Sorcerer was already a contender, but being re-classified as a Core Skill again pushes it back to the top. This means gear rolls focusing on core skill damage and other related aspects are now fully synergistic, making the build even more potent. It might not visually display as a core skill on the tooltip, but the mechanics are there. This build was already incredibly strong, and this buff just solidified its position as one of the top contenders for pushing high-level Pit content, possibly even Pit 150.

For Sorcerers, it’s a good time to revisit your gear. Winterglass is back in play, and combined with the fix for Strike of Stormhorn unique, the scaling is just out of control. It’s a prime example of how small numerical tweaks can completely redefine a class’s viability.

Immortal Barbarian and the Overperforming Rogue

While Ball Lightning is ascendant, the Barbarian continues its reign as the “immortal” class. My current Whirlwind build, with its massive movement speed and tankiness, makes all content, including these buffed Infernal Hordes, feel trivial. It’s hard to die as a Barb, which takes a lot of the pressure out of new or challenging content. A lot of players value that survivability over pure DPS, especially in late-night progression or when playing casually.

On the other hand, the Rogue, specifically the Umbral/Shadow Clone build, is still feeling pretty “busted.” Despite other nerfs, Rogue managed to escape untouched in these patch notes, meaning its current high performance isn’t going anywhere yet. It highlights how some builds just slip through the cracks of hotfix cycles, maintaining an edge for a little longer. It’s almost frustrating how some classes just consistently outperform others without drawing attention from the balance team.

Final Takeaways

This latest Diablo 4 update is a mixed bag, as most often are. The “Compass to Carnage” event genuinely makes Infernal Hordes more viable for Aether farming and potentially targeting specific uniques, but it’s still a significant time investment. Don’t go into it expecting to replace your Nightmare Dungeon or Pit runs for general loot. However, if you have stockpiled Compasses, it’s a good time to burn them.

The hotfixes underscore the fluid nature of the meta. Blood Lance and Warlock Eviscerate builds are out, while Ball Lightning Sorcerer is definitively back on top. Barbarians remain incredibly resilient and strong for all content, offering a safer, if sometimes slower, progression path. Rogue’s Umbral/Shadow Clone build continues to impress, largely untouched.

Ultimately, this patch encourages some experimentation with War Plans and a re-evaluation of your build. The game continues to evolve, and staying on top of these changes is part of the grind. Just remember to factor in your time; efficiency still matters more than chasing a theoretical optimal setup that takes three times as long.
