Guys, What’s going on? Librarian Husky here My Laning stage was fine, but then I had no idea what to do. If that sounds like your problem, watch this guide. When I was climbing from 4k to 10k, my biggest issue was the mid game.

Understanding the Mid-Game in Dota

I could watch all the YouTube content about the laning stage, how to pull, control the lane, abuse the level two timing, two versus one trade, etc., etc., but the problem appears in the mid game. And There‘s a reason for that. BSJ said it a long time ago.

Laning stage is the most consistent part of Dota. Improve your lane mechanics and you can set yourself up for a victory. But if you don’t know what to do once the lane ends, even with a good start, you will lose games. There are tons of guides about the laning stage, but very few answer the question, what do I do next?

Obviously, you can watch coaching sessions and try to apply their moves into your game, but how helpful can this be? Every game is different. Even if you’re playing the same hero, the other nine heroes, their item timings, and the map state are all different. That’s why creating a mid-game guide is hard. My goal is, however, to give you mid-game milestones, as well as change the way you’re thinking in the game, so you don’t feel lost after the laning’s face anymore.

Defining the Mid-Game Phase

What is mid-game? Mid-game isn’t strictly timed. There‘s no fixed minute when it starts or ends. For this guide, we’re going to establish it as post-laning phase Dota. If you had a good laning stage, you will set yourself up for a decent game. Good mid-game. However, I believe you will win 80% of the games.

One, abuse timings. This is by far the most important part of this guide and the most overlooked concept at low MMR. You need to abuse both item and level timings. Your P just hit level six on mid lane. Go help him get a kill or ask him to come to your lane. You leave lane and now your legion commander gets level six. Time to go dual. Your earth shaker just got a blink. Smoke and gank. Your axe has a blink. Do the same.

Improving Gameplay as a Support

Low MMR supports often win lane then feel completely lost. How to fix it? Carry a Smoke and enable heroes with power spikes. After the timing is used, like a duel, DP exorcism, or Storm is out of mana, leave them and go elsewhere. Don’t stick around the hero without the timing. Don’t follow a hero who has no power spike. Instead, rotate to whoever has it next.

Two, be mindful of Enemy timings. Every situation has a mirror version. Be aware of the enemy’s power spikes. Enemy Ember has a rune. He wants to use it. Be very mindful where you show on the map. Haven’t seen axe in five minutes. He’s likely got a blinker waiting. Enemy Enigma used black hole recently. Now he doesn’t have it. Perhaps it’s a good time for a smoke. If the enemy misses a key timing or cooldown, punish it hard. A legion commander with no dual damage is just a stunbot. A tide hunter with no ravage is a walking creep. Storm with no mana is useless. Track enemy cooldowns and their items. It helps you control the game.

Three, play around objectives. The mid-game is when your team becomes able to take the objectives like towers, XP shrines, or tormentors. Remember, runes are objectives, too. It’s close to 14 minutes. Smoke toward the XP shrine. You either get a kill or you steal their experience. A minute later, you get way less impact out of the same move. An enemy mid hero always checks the runes.

Strategic Gameplay Tips

Wait around it. You can get a high-value kill by being in an obvious place. Make sure that as the game progresses, kills lead to map pressure. Don’t just get a kill and split up. Start pushing towers. Each tower you take denies them a portion of the map they can play on. Force fights in a way that suits you. Push their wave into tower, force a TP, then fight on the other side of the map. Go for Rosh when the ravage or warlock golem is down. They will fight in a disadvantage or give up Rosh.

Four numbers and vision win fights. This is straightforward. Take fights when you have numbers and vision advantage. That means someone on their side just TPed. You have a short window to fight five versus four. Your team has vision while enemy doesn’t. You can probably get a better jump. If they don’t have a TP or are far from the towers, they can’t join the fight. Heroes with long cooldowns or no mana are non-heroes. Treat them that way. We will have a team fight guide in the future, but for now, fights are won by having more people and more information.

Five, ward with purpose. Your warding should match your intentions. Ask yourself, are we going to fight in 2 minutes? Place a deep ward near the enemy triangle or jungle. Now enemy clinks just got orchid sentry and ward your triangle to catch him. You want to play defensive ward entrances through your jungle, not their clips. Every ward should have a plan behind it. Good wards give you options, not just vision. And remember one thing on top of all of that, being proactive wins games. Especially at lower brackets where many players are content to AFK farm. A player that smokes and forces plays will instantly gain MMR.

Effective Map Control

Map control is essential for securing victory in MOBA games. By understanding key strategic points on the map and leveraging them to your advantage, you can dictate the flow of the game and outmaneuver your opponents. Here are some crucial aspects to consider when aiming for effective map control:

Utilize high-ground vision: Vision plays a vital role in controlling the map. Ward key locations to gain vision superiority and anticipate enemy movements. High-ground wards offer invaluable information and can help you set up ambushes or avoid ganks.

Objective prioritization: Towers are not just structures; they represent control over territory. Taking down enemy towers not only grants your team map dominance but also limits the opponent’s safe areas. Prioritize objectives strategically to apply pressure and create opportunities for your team.

Rotations and pressure: Strategic rotations can catch opponents off guard and create favorable engagements. By applying pressure in multiple lanes or areas of the map, you force the enemy to react defensively, allowing your team to dictate the pace of the game. Coordinate rotations with your team to maximize their impact.

Resource denial: Efficient resource management involves denying the enemy access to key resources such as jungle camps, runes, and Roshan. By controlling these critical areas and denying the opponent resources, you can cripple their economy and limit their options in the game.

Communication and coordination: Effective map control requires team coordination and communication. Ensure that your team is on the same page regarding objectives, vision, and rotations. Clear communication can prevent misplays and maximize the impact of your map control strategies.

By mastering these aspects of map control and implementing them in your gameplay, you can gain a significant advantage over your opponents and pave the way for victory in competitive matches. Remember, map control is not just about vision; it’s about strategic decision-making and proactive gameplay that sets the pace of the game.

And even if you mess up, it’s still the best learning experience. If you lost while being proactive, you will know why. It’s either bad timing or bad coordination. But if you lost while doing nothing, you won’t learn anything.

Ending the game. If you follow all these steps, abusing timings, taking objectives, warding aggressively, and playing around cooldowns, you will probably control at least 70% of the map. That means you get more gold, better wards, and you can force good fights.

With a 20k gold lead, ending becomes easy. You will have more items and better map presence. All it takes is practice and asking yourself the right questions. Who’s strong right now? Who’s weak right now? What are we playing for? What is the enemy about to do?

Master these habits and you will never walk out, sorry, feel lost post-laning stage again.
