Hey there, survivors! Librarian Husky here to guide you through your first steps in Rust. From choosing the right server to building your very first base, this guide covers all the essentials to get you started on the right foot. Whether you’re aiming for the classic vanilla experience or something a bit different, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in and make sure your Rust adventure begins strong!

Types of Rust Servers

Rust offers several types of servers, each with its own features and suited for different playstyles. Official servers provide the classic Rust experience and attract a large number of players after wipes. Community servers are run by members of the Rust community, usually have fewer players, but feature more active administration. Finally, modded servers offer custom features, boosted drop rates, pay-to-win kits, and unique commands. For beginners, it’s recommended to start on an official low-pop server.

Exploring Server Options

Understanding the differences between official, community, and modded servers will help you choose the best fit for your Rust journey. Official servers provide the classic Rust gameplay with large player bases. Community servers create unique settings and gameplay styles. Modded servers cater to individual preferences with customized settings and additional features.

Starting Out on a Server

When you spawn on the server, you’ll find yourself on the beach with a rock and a torch. The rock is your first tool for gathering essential resources. Start by hitting trees to collect wood. Watch for sparks when you hit the tree—this speeds up the gathering process.

Resources in Rust: A Guide to Farming

Besides wood, you can gather three other key resources with your rock: stone used to upgrade your base; metal used to craft weapons, armor, and base upgrades; and sulfur used for crafting ammo and explosives for raids. Pay attention to the sparks while gathering resources, as they speed up the process.

Tools for Efficient Farming

After gathering some wood and stone, you should be able to craft a stone hatchet and a stone pickaxe. These tools allow you to farm resources faster and more efficiently. Another important resource is cloth, which you get by picking up hemp fibers. Cloth is used to craft sleeping bags, which serve as respawn points when you die.

Crafting Weapons and Armor in Rust

In Rust, you can use cloth to craft a bow, which serves as a reliable starting weapon. Cloth is also essential for crafting your first set of armor, providing basic protection as you progress in the game.

Armor Stats and Protection

When equipping armor in Rust, two main stats matter: projectile protection and radiation protection. Projectile protection reduces the damage taken from arrows and bullets — the higher this percentage, the better. Radiation protection is crucial for entering certain areas on the map without taking damage, as some zones have radiation hazards.

Alongside armor, managing your health, water, and food bars is vital. If your food and water bars deplete, your health will start to drop, and reaching zero health means death. A quick way to replenish these bars is by visiting rivers, where pumpkins and corn spawn frequently.

Health and Healing in Rust

Eating food gradually restores your health, but for faster healing, you can craft bandages from cloth. Bandages restore 5 health points and stop bleeding caused by recent damage, making them an essential early-game healing item.

Exploring Monuments and Loot in Rust

Press G to open your map and locate rivers and named areas called monuments. Rust has 30 different monuments scattered across the map. Inside these monuments, you can find loot crates containing valuable items.

Some monuments also feature useful utilities such as recyclers, oil refineries, and repair benches. Additionally, certain monuments have puzzles you can solve to earn extra loot, making exploration both rewarding and strategic.

Monuments and Safe Zones

Certain monuments in Rust are known as safe zones. These are areas where players cannot be attacked by others. In these safe zones, you can accept missions and access in-game shops. Additionally, some safe zones allow you to purchase vehicles, such as boats at the fishing village, horses at the ranch, and helicopters at Bandit Camp.

Choosing Build Spots

After understanding monuments, the next step is to choose a build spot. Ideally, place your base near multiple monuments to have easy access to various loot locations. For beginners, a recommended strategy is to build your base between monuments and the ocean, providing safer farming options.

Preparing for Farming in Rust

Building near the ocean allows you to farm barrels and crates in the water, which is generally much safer than farming directly at monuments.

Choosing Your Building Location

Once you select your building spot, head there without spending too much time farming, as farming far from your base risks dying and losing resources. Instead, focus on gathering cloth to place sleeping bags along your path to your base.

On your way, you may encounter Rust’s wildlife. There are five main animals: chickens, which are easy to kill but yield few resources; deer, which don’t fight back but run quickly when damaged; and three aggressive animals—wolves, bears, and boars—that will attack if you get too close.

Resources Obtained from Animals in the Game

Certain resources can only be gathered from animals. For example, animal fat is used to craft low-grade fuel needed for furnaces; leather can be crafted into armor; and bone fragments are used to create bone armor and weapons like the bone knife. Animals also drop a useful amount of cloth.

Building Your First Base

When you arrive at your chosen build spot, it’s time to start constructing your first base. Begin by crafting a building plan and a hammer. The building plan allows you to select different structures by holding right-click, while the hammer is used to upgrade your base materials from wood to stone, metal, or armored. Start by placing foundations, walls, door frames, and ceilings, then finish with a door and a lock.

Building Your Base in a Survival Game

Pay close attention to your wall placement—if walls face the wrong way, enemies can easily peek inside your base. To complete your base, place down a tool cupboard, which is vital for preventing decay. Without it, your base will slowly degrade over time. Store enough resources inside the cupboard to cover the upkeep timer; failing to do so will cause decay. For added security, consider adding an airlock—this makes it harder for attackers to gain access.

Protecting Your Base with a Tool Cupboard

The tool cupboard is the heart of your base’s defense and maintenance. Always ensure it contains sufficient resources to keep your base intact. Adding an airlock enhances protection and makes it more difficult for enemies to raid you. Fortifying your base with these elements significantly increases your chances of survival.

Building Workbenches in Rust

After securing your base, your next priority is to build a workbench. Workbenches come in three tiers, each requiring more resources but allowing access to more advanced crafting recipes. For a tier one workbench, you need 500 wood, 100 metal fragments (obtained by smelting metal ore in a furnace), and 50 scrap. Scrap can be farmed by looting barrels and boxes along roads and at monuments.

Crafting and Gathering Resources

While looting, you’ll find components useful for specific crafting recipes or that can be recycled at monuments to gain more scrap and resources. Once your workbench is placed, you’re ready to start crafting better gear and upgrading your equipment.

Equipping Yourself in Rust

When gearing up, I recommend crafting a crossbow and a nail gun. These two weapons work well together and are relatively cheap to make. For armor, start with a set of burlap clothes, wood legs, a poncho, and a bone helmet. This basic armor set will protect you enough to safely enter all monuments and defend against other players.

Progressing Your Gear

As you advance in Rust, you’ll unlock the ability to craft stronger and more durable armor, improving your survivability in tougher situations.

Researching Items in Rust

Press E at your workbench to open the research table. Here, you can use scrap to research items based on your workbench level. This process can be costly. An alternative method is to find items in loot crates, then place them with some scrap into a research table. Once an item is researched, you can craft unlimited copies, provided you have the required workbench level and materials.
