Hey, Folks, this is Librarian Husky. Playing Nilah? Then this guide exactly for you, let’s break it down!
Nilah: A Unique ADC Guide
Nilah is one of the most rewarding ADCs to learn, offering a unique playstyle and learning curve due to being a melee champion. Many players give up on mastering her due to this challenge. In this guide, we will delve into everything you need to know to excel with Nilah, enabling you to compete at the highest ranks alongside your favorite streamers or pro players.
Enu, your host for this season 15 split 2 Nilah guide, has been dedicated to mastering Nilah since her release. From runes to laning strategies, this guide covers a comprehensive overview of playing Nilah effectively. Let’s dive into the specifics starting with the crucial aspect of selecting the right runes.
Firstly, conquer Stands out as the optimal keystone for Nilah, thanks to her auto-attacking playstyle that synergizes well with spell weaving. Triumph proves to be a game-changer in critical moments, offering valuable playmaking potential. Alacrity shines due to Nilah’s healing abilities, enhancing her early-game performance. However, for a scaling approach, bloodline presents a viable alternative. Last Stand typically reigns as the top choice, except for scenarios where cut down benefits more, especially if you serve as your team’s primary engage.
Regarding secondary runes, the choice between inspiration and resolve arises. Magical footwear and cosmic insight emerge as strong picks in most situations, with biscuit delivery finding its place in more challenging or poke-heavy matchups. Unflinching within the resolve tree gains prominence due to recent buffs, bolstering Nilah’s tankiness during engagements. Shield bash becomes a viable option when paired with shield supports like Lulu, Karma, or Yumi, While conditioning and second wind serve specific purposes based on the lane matchup.
In terms of skill order, prioritizing points in Nilah’s E for cooldown reduction before maxing Q proves to be an effective strategy. While Q scales well with AD, early-game emphasis on E enhances damage output and lowers dash cooldown, crucial for skirmishes. The item tier list further refines the build path, offering insights into the most valuable items for Nilah’s kit. Summoner spell selection and ideal timings add another layer of strategic depth when playing Nilah.
The guide will now transition to discussing Nilah’s build paths, a nuanced aspect that requires careful consideration for optimal performance.
Item Build Strategy
I get these questions a lot. So with starter items, EgorDoran‘s Blade 80% of the time, but for matchups where you are 100% certain that you can’t start fights, for example, you have a Yumi and the enemy have Karma, so you know you’ll be poked out no matter what, you should start Doran Shield and also take second wind. For Nilah, she always prefers having Yone’s Wild Arrows first or second Because the item gives an incredible amount of stats for the price. But the downside is the build path makes it so hard to buy.

This means that if you ever have enough gold for an early BF sword base, which is 1,300 gold, you should always buy a BF sword, then build towards Yone’s Wild Arrows. If you cannot afford BF sword on your first or second base, you can go collector first, then you second. The goal is to always try to build YTO in your first two items. And if you can’t afford it, that’s okay. The alternate build is to go collector LDR. But this is for if you are really behind the curve. If you can afford to first, you can pretty much just buy any item you need after, such as shield bow, IE, or even LDR second. It all depends on what you need.
You can refer to the item tier list explanation for that. And as for Nilah’s third item, it’s very common to buy an armor penetration item such as LDR or motor reminder depending on if the enemies have a lot of healing or not. And if they have a team comp like Soraka plus Mundo, you definitely want to buy motor over LDR. Then just mix and match until you have 75% crit. And when that happens, you can either choose to finish off the build with an IE for damage, which brings you to 100% crit, or just buy death stance, which gives a lot of AD and guarantees that you will survive and not get one shot in fights. Infinity Edge is a nice item for sure, but its price and lack of utility makes it drop down in priority compared to other items. Because Nilah doesn’t lack damage when she has three to four items. She lacks survivability because of her range. So, usually I don’t really build Infinity Edge in maybe about 60 to 70% of my games until very late.
As for boots, I usually just sit on tier one boots for a very long time until maybe three to four items because you kind of want to rush damage items on Nilah. The only exception is when you are behind the curve and you build collector LDR, which means you need attack speed boots, or when the enemies have either a full AD or very high CC comp, which means that you need to buy certain boots like steel caps and mercurial treads. Then you can buy before three items.
That is pretty much it for all items. I don’t think it is that hard to understand since essentially you just want to be as strong as you can for early to mid-game. And as you get to late game, most of Nilah’s builds will end up doing very similar damage, and you’ll basically buy the same items. The common theme is you will most likely always have a shield bow and LDR no matter what build you go. Now, on to Nilah’s laning phase. Possibly the thing that people get wrong the most.

Understanding Nilah’s Unique Lane Phase as a Melee Champion
So, Because she is a melee champion, her lane phases are very different from the standard ADC champion. This is something that most players will not understand, which is why her pick rate is so low. She simply isn’t rewarding to play until you actually know what you are doing. And most people just cannot play that many games to learn her lane phase. That’s okay. That is why I am here to speed up your learning.
Let’s start with Level one, the most important part of her lane phase. As Nilah, you never really want to fight level one because you don’t have range and you cannot stick to the enemies long enough to kill them most of the time. Think about it this way. Because you’re a melee, let’s say you trade autos one for one with the enemies. If you don’t kill them, you would have to walk back, right? But since the enemies are ranged, they’re always able to land a few more autos or spells onto you because they will hit you as you are walking out. That is never worth for Nilah. And the lower you are, the worse it is for you since you won’t be able to walk out to farm, which makes your passive very useless.
So instead, level one, you should always skill check your enemy by seeing how they position. If they pressure you, simply just back off and only take exp of the first wave while waiting for the minion wave to crash to your turret. This will allow you to fight at level two and three if the enemies walk up too far since they will be at your turret. Level three is usually the safest time to all-in enemies, but level two all-ins work out sometimes too if the enemies already lost some health from Other sources like your support, minion damage, or turret damage.
If the enemies don’t pressure you level one, there’s a good chance that the laners already won because you will be able to free scale to level three by hitting the minions. After level three, you basically survive the hardest part of her lane phase and all you have to do is just farm and look for opportunities without losing too many minions, of course.
So, how do you fight in lane as Nilah? Isn’t she short-ranged? The number one rule of fighting as Nilah before level six is you never want to engage onto them when they are full health or if they are too close to their turret. By this, I mean you always want the minion waves to be on your side of the lane. You can achieve this by freezing or just last hitting minions and letting the enemies push the wave into you. Other times, you should always allow your support to start or bait fights for you. If they’re hitting your support, always try to retaliate on their ADC. And the best thing to do is to usually never let your support take damage for free unless they’re trolling. This works for any ADC champion, not just Nilah, but especially for Nilah because your burst is so high. If the enemies flash or they engage onto your support, you should try to do damage to the enemies.
Optimizing Laning Phase with Nilah
It will normally end up in a kill or burning the enemy flashes. Keep in mind that focusing the enemy ADC is Always the most important part of laning, unless There are special occasions where they have a champion like Sona where you can just instantly kill them and get out without dying. A useful tip for fighting, never instantly use both of Neil’s E charges because that leaves you very vulnerable. Always try to save one charge as a backup just in case.
After level six, things become easier. You can always use minions to engage onto the enemies with your ult. The enemies were generally not expected and you can use this trick to burn flashes or get a kill depending on if the enemies try to fight you or not. But generally speaking, your first ult should always guarantee burning a flash if they have it up. Usually Nilah onto enemies who don’t have flashes will end up in the kill most of the time. So if there’s anything you should get out of this, always take advantage of the enemies that don’t have flash from Nilah’s ult. And you do this for the entire game, not just lane phase.
Another thing you can do is just Freezing as Nilah. There are many ways you can set up a freeze, and it would take way too long to go through every single method, but just recognize this one pattern. When the enemies have more minions than you, and you are even only slightly stronger than the enemies, let this wave slow push into you while pressing the enemies. What this means is you will only last hit every single minion. Don’t AoE or hit minions before they get to your execute range with an auto or a Q.
And when you establish this, make the enemies walk up or waste mana and spells for every single minion possible. The enemies will also be in a position where your jungler can always gank them easily. And again, only do this if you are strong enough where you can fight them if they contest a wave. If you are significantly weaker, only freeze on the enemies when they are recalling or out of lane. Freezing on Nilah is something you will have to practice a few times before you get the hang of it, but I do it very often in my games and it gives you a big advantage over the enemies if done right because of Neil’s exp passive.

Transitioning to Mid and Late Game
After the lane phase, you can choose to go mid lane or top lane depending on the matchup. If you have a mid laner that can side lane safely like Zed, Silas, Twist of Fate, etc., you can go mid. If you have a control mage who can die easily, just let them stay mid and either you go top or stay bot for a few waves. Only rotate on good fights and keep your farm up. Let’s say if there was an objective spawning in 1 minute, you should probably rotate to it as soon as possible. And make sure to recall when there’s 1 minute left so that you could buy your items and be as strong as you can and still get there in time.
Split pushing is another option, but only if you realize that the enemies have horrible macro and they constantly group up for bad fights or they waste time. Split pushing usually works out much better in lower elos such as below diamond or maybe even mid diamond.
Team Fight Strategy
And finally, for team fights, the best advice I can give is to try and oat as many people as possible. Prioritizing the enemy carries or the person that is most fed on the enemy team. This can mean you are hitting them front to back. Maybe you’re entering from a side flank or behind the enemies in order to achieve this goal. Neless team fighting isn’t very linear and straightforward, especially if your flash is on cool down.
But usually, if the enemies have a lot of CC, I will try to sneak myself out of vision, then enter fights from the side to catch the enemies off guard. That is all I have for today’s guide, and I think I covered most of the things you need to know about Nilah in order to climb to your desired ranks. I tried to make this guide as simple as possible without introducing too many concepts or making it too hard to understand, but please let me know if you have any questions or if you think There is something that I didn’t cover.
