Prepare yourself, for this is a task of great magnitude, worthy of only the most discerning minds in the Imperium.

Setting the Stage

First, I’m going to establish the structure for this list. We’ll start with a quick overview. No explanation needed, but first up is Fulgrim, whom I’m placing straight into the C tier. He suffers from the fact that his Legion was much cooler before he fell. Additionally, he’s aligned with the worst Chaos God, Slaanesh, who is frankly the least impressive of them all. There are three others that are far more interesting.

Reviewing the Primarks: Fulgrim

Next up is Sanguinius, whom I’m also assigning to C tier. Personally, I find the angel to be a bit dull. To be honest, I’ve never been that into the Blood Angels. They’re okay, but just thatβ€”okay. The only part of Sanguinius I truly enjoy is his interaction with Ka’bandha. Their battles are incredibly intense. However, overall, he comes across as a less impressive version of Conrad Kurze.

Reviewing the Primarks: The Lion

Lastly, we have the Lion, and I’m placing him into C tier as well. While he has his merits, he doesn’t quite stand out enough to earn a higher rank in this particular list.

Alpharius and His Role

I love his Legion. His Legion is incredibly cool; however, he himself is just kind of there. That’s the essence of his presenceβ€”he just hangs around. He’s a great duelist, don’t get me wrong. His fights are really entertaining, but it’s always his brothers who steal the show. This is similar to how Conrad Kurze often overshadows him in some scenes.

Russ vs Alpharius: A Memorable Fight

One exception I’ll make is his fight with Russβ€”that was an amazing battle. Moving on, let’s talk about Ferrus Manus. Now, Angron deserves a solid B tier. His history is truly tragic, and of all the Chaos Primarchs, he’s probably the least to blame for his actions. Cursed from the start, his anger is almost justified.

Angron: A Tragic and Powerful Primarch

Who doesn’t enjoy a bit of rampaging Angron? I like him for the same reasons I enjoy Doomβ€”it’s like watching a giant Doom guy in action. Also, Khorne is great, not my favorite Chaos God, but definitely high up there. He’s not the top, but he’s close.

Lorgar and His Legion

Lorgar goes straight into D-tier. As I mentioned before, I despise this guy. But I respect his drive. His Legion has some similar qualities. He’s one of those characters where I think, β€œI hate you, but I respect your grind.” I used to think Perturabo was the man-child of the 40K lore, but Lorgar really takes the cake.

Alpharius: The Trickster Primarch

I’m placing Alpharius into B tier, right next to Angron. He’s a fascinating characterβ€”tricky and complicated, especially with the whole situation between him and Omegon. Honestly, it’s hard to tell what’s really going on there. His Primarch book is outstanding, though, which would put him higher on the list if not for the fact that he humiliated the Custodians back on Terra. Constantine Valdor probably let him win, but still, this is an unbiased tier list, after all.

Conrad Kurze: The Dark Genius

Conrad Kurze goes straight into S tier. He has the perfect Primarch book and an amazing story. Everything about him is fascinating, though he’s absolutely insane. Granted, he commits some of the most depraved and horrifying acts in 40K, but considering his backstory, can we really blame him? Maybe we’ve been too hard on Conrad. We should acknowledge that he’s one of the best Primarchs, despite his madness.

Leman Russ: The Emperor’s Executioner

Leman Russ earns his place in A tier. He’s a big-time badass, and I have a soft spot for the more imposing Primarchs. While many are the quiet, brooding types, Russ stands out because he’s vocal about how awesome he is. Plus, his role as the Emperor’s Executioner is legendary. Sure, roughing up Magnus wasn’t his finest moment, but overall, who doesn’t love a giant space Viking charging into battle?

Jaghatai Khan: The Smack-Talking Duelist

Another easy S tier is Jaghatai Khan. This guy is the coolestβ€”one of the greatest duelists and the absolute best when it comes to delivering smack talk.

Jaghatai Khan: The Verbal Duelist

If you’re looking for some entertaining brotherly banter, check out Jaghatai Khan’s conversations with Fulgrim or Mortarion. He verbally dismantles them and could probably take them down in a fight, as he does to Mortarion. His cleverness shines through, and his Legion is phenomenal. Who wouldn’t love the concept of Space Marines on jet bikes? It’s incredibly cool.

Roboute Guilliman: The Dull Strategist

No surprises here, but everyone’s favorite boy scout, Roboute Guilliman, goes straight into D tier. When it comes down to it, Dorn is the more exciting tactical Primarch. Sure, if you like Roman history, you might be a fan of the Ultramarines. I even suspect that if you play a lot of 4X games, you probably like Guilliman, since he seems like the type to have a multi-thousand hour save in Europa Universalis. But overall, he’s just boring. The only thing keeping him from being lower is his Ultra Depression form in current 40K. The man’s got a rough life.

Mortarion: A Mixed Bag

Mortarion lands in C tier. What elevates him above D is his presence in the early Horus Heresy books. He’s charismatic when he wants to be, and I enjoyed his appearances. But, when he’s not being cool, he comes off as a bit of a whiny man-child. Another thing keeping him from moving into B tier is that he’s the bane of my existence on the tabletop. I absolutely hate Death Guard and Mortarion.
