Much like the LCS, the LPL—short for League of Legends Pro League—is China’s top-tier professional League of Legends competition. It kicked off in Spring 2013, and since then, it’s been held twice a year, once in spring and again in summer.

With the bold slogan “crazy is our game”, the LPL is powered by Tencent, a media giant and the biggest name in the gaming world by revenue. With that kind of backing, the LPL is financially rock solid—there’s no shortage of resources to support the league and its players.

Speaking of resources, the LPL’s ¥2,350,000 prize pool is a reflection of just how serious the competition is. Thankfully, Riot Games broadcasts the LPL in English too, so fans across the globe can enjoy watching some of the best talent in the game compete.

How Does the LPL Format Work?

Over the years, the format has seen its fair share of tweaks, but the current setup seems to be sticking around. Here’s how it plays out:

  • During the regular season, all 16 teams compete in a single group, playing best-of-three matches.
  • The top eight teams move on to the playoffs, which are best-of-five series.
  • The playoff structure is staggered based on regular season performance:
  • 1st and 2nd place teams get a bye to the semifinals (Round 3)
  • 3rd and 4th place teams start in the quarterfinals (Round 2)
  • 5th through 8th begin in Round 1

Winners of the spring split earn the chance to represent China at the Mid-Season Invitational, while spots at the World Championship are given to:

  • The summer split winner
  • The team with the most championship points
  • And both the winner and runner-up of the regional qualifier

The LPL has earned a reputation for aggressive play and high skill ceilings, making it one of the most entertaining leagues for fans around the world.
