Patch 7.40C Changes

Illusion Heroes

Illusion-based heroes took notable nerfs:

  • Abaddon’s Curse of Avernus no longer applies on illusions;
  • Broodmother’s Incapacitating Bite no longer affects illusions.

These changes dropped his win rate by a few percent, but he remains a strong option, especially as a counter to single-target physical carries like Clinkz and Shadow Fiend.

BKB-Piercing Offlaners

Axe, Legion Commander, and Primal Beast received small nerfs. The patch targets the BKB-piercing offlane archetype without removing it. These heroes are still strong; if further letter patches add more nerfs, other offlane options may become relatively better. For now, they remain among the best picks for their role.

Clinkz and Ember Spirit

Clinkz was nerfed in his ability to destroy the base quickly, but he stays very strong.

  • Built-in farming tool with his third spell (similar to an early Helm of the Dominator);
  • Strong shard for wave clear with minimal exposure and high mobility;
  • Early Falcon Blade–Desolator build that deals huge mid-game damage.

Carries often have to skip Mask of Madness and go straight for Manta; Clinkz remains one of the hardest heroes to pin down. Ember Spirit, the top playmaker mid, was also nerfed. The Searing Chains (Chain Gang facet) build—maxing Chains, rushing Spirit Vessel, then chaining with a Remnant for low commitment and high damage—is still very effective. He is hard to lock down and excels at kiting Blade Mail and burst heroes. Both Clinkz and Ember remain top-tier picks despite the changes.

His damage output is extremely high; with a Daedalus in the mid game, he can two- or three-shot heroes at max range. His laning and mid-game potential are among the best. Both SF and Clinkz struggle into Phantom Lancer and Terrorblade: high armor and multi-target illusions make it hard for these single-target physical carries to focus and kill.

Mid: Ember Spirit and Counters

Ember Spirit remains the meta-defining mid. He has bad lane matchups that are also strong in the meta: Huskar and the resurgent Tinker. If the enemy picks these, consider different mids or draft around them.

Off Lane: Legion Commander

For pubs, Legion Commander is one of the best offlaners. As long as ranged damage dealers die to Blade Mail and squishy agility heroes like Slark, Anti-Mage, and Phantom Lancer are popular, Legion will stay strong. The best way to counter her is from the support role: saves that make Duel unreliable.

Position 4: Spirit Breaker
