Arcane Mage Basics

Arcane Mage gameplay revolves around generating arcane charges efficiently and then utilizing them strategically. The primary goal is to accumulate four arcane charges and then expend them with Arcane Barrage, which serves as your primary damage-dealing ability.

To effectively play as an Arcane Mage, you need to follow a straightforward yet intricate cycle. First, you generate arcane charges through specific abilities. Second, you deplete these charges by casting Arcane Barrage. Lastly, you repeat this process while integrating cooldowns and responding to procs. Each ability that aids in generating charges serves a distinct purpose within your gameplay strategy.

Arcane Missiles, for instance, is a reactionary ability triggered by your passive clear casting. This activation is visually represented by symbols surrounding your character, indicating that you can cast Arcane Missiles without mana cost. On the other hand, Arcane Orb is a valuable tool for accumulating arcane charges; you can hold up to two orbs, and upon activation, it grants you charges both upon casting and hitting targets. Meanwhile, Arcane Blast functions as your primary filler spell, to be used when Arcane Orb or Arcane Missiles are unavailable.

As for spending your charges, the general rule is to unleash Arcane Barrage when you have accumulated four arcane charges. This action not only resets your charges but also inflicts substantial damage and frequently triggers passive effects. Essentially, the gameplay loop revolves around building and expending charges efficiently.

Now that you comprehend the fundamental mechanics of the Arcane Mage specialization, it’s crucial to layer cooldown management on top of your basic rotation. The Arcane Mage’s gameplay heavily relies on three significant cooldowns: Evocation, which primarily restores mana but also boosts intellect through Siphon Storm; Arcane Surge, a mana-draining ability that amplifies your damage output significantly; and Touch of the Magi, which applies a debuff storing a portion of your damage and detonating upon expiration. These cooldowns align to create distinct phases within your gameplay strategy.

Optimizing Arcane Mage Gameplay

Your burn phase every 90 seconds involves a combination of evocation, Arcane Surge, and Touch of the Magi. Additionally, you have a mini-burn phase every 45 seconds where you focus on Touch of the Magi. To maximize efficiency, ensure that before using Touch of the Magi, you expend one arcane barrage to utilize the four arcane charges it provides. Despite concerns about mana management, following the spec’s priorities should prevent mana depletion. Even during intense moments like the opener or with bloodlust, your resources can quickly stabilize. In cases of low mana, Arcane Barrage remains effective with zero charges. While mana is a factor in gameplay, understanding your rotation eliminates concerns.

Considering the fundamentals, integrating hero talents enhances your performance. Spell Slinger transforms the arcane specialization into a more dynamic playstyle. By incorporating the Hellstorm Weapon from Halo into your talent tree, you gain the ability to generate arcane splinters. Upon accumulating eight splinters, your target experiences additional damage. Aside from the direct damage boost, the significance of splinters lies in Frost Teachings’ ability to create arcane orbs.

These orbs serve as valuable arcane charge generators, especially in AoE scenarios. The process of generating splinters involves leveraging Clear Casting, Nether Precision, and the powerful Arcane Surge. Tracking key procs like Intuition, Arcane Tempo, Arcane Harmony, and Orb Barrage is crucial for optimizing your gameplay.

Tracking Key Procs for Maximum Efficiency

Intuition offers a random power boost to your next barrage, prompting you to use it immediately upon activation. Arcane Tempo grants a haste buff each time you cast Arcane Barrage, emphasizing the need to maintain this buff consistently.

Arcane Harmony boosts the damage of your subsequent Arcane Barrage by 5% whenever Arcane Missiles hit an enemy, with the effect accumulating up to 20 times. Lastly, Orb Barrage plays a vital role in your rotation, contributing to the intricate dance of managing your resources and maximizing damage output.

Arcane Mage Single Target Priority

Casting barrage can trigger a free arcane orb, which means more arcane charges. The spec rewards you for knowing what’s coming and playing slightly ahead of the spec, not reacting after the fact. Arcane Mage’s single target gameplay is in the fixed rotation. Your entire strategy revolves around building up to four charges and then spending them with Arcane Barrage, ideally when it’s empowered by those other effects.

To help judge that, there’s a weak aura by Porum, the author of the Wowhead Arcane Mage Guide that gives real-time visual and audio cues when it’s actually optimal to use Arcane Barrage. It won’t replace your understanding of Arcane Mage, but once you know the basics, it’ll help you make better decisions on the fly. If you don’t know how to play properly yet, it won’t do the work for you, but it’s a huge help when you’re tracking multiple procs under pressure.

Now let’s go over the single target priority from highest to lowest. Your first priority is always to use Arcane Barrage if you get intuition or if Arcane Tempo is about to fall off, even if you’ve noted four arcane charges. The second priority is to use shifting power to reduce the cooldowns of Arcane Surge and everything else. This should be done after using Arcane Surge and when the Siphon Storm buff from Evocation expires.

Next, use Arcane Barrage at four arcane charges if you have at least 12 stacks of Arcane Harmony. If you have one or less Nether Precision stacks, prioritize using Arcane Missiles with the Aether Aunement buff. Keep in mind that if Touch of the Magi is about to be available, it should take precedence. If you don’t have the Aether attunement buff and you get a clear casting proc, use Arcane Missiles if you don’t have another precision stack.

Due to the high voltage talent, Arcane Missiles will have a chance to generate an arcane charge. So, when using arcane missiles in this build, ensure you have less than four arcane charges to avoid over capping.

The next priority is to use Arcane Barrage with four arcane charges if you have a clear casting proc. If you have one stack of Nether Precision and either Aether attunement or your target is below 35% health, the next priority is to use Arcane Barrage again. If you have four arcane charges and an arcane orb available, use that arcane orb if you’re below three charges. Remember, you need to aim your character towards the enemy to hit with the arcane orb – targeting isn’t sufficient.

If you get an intuition proc without the Arcane Tempo buff, the next priority is to use Arcane Barrage. If you’re low on arcane charges without any arcane orbs available or procs, resort to using filler spells to generate charges. Arcane Explosion should be used if you have less than two charges and you’re in melee range. Arcane Blast is more suitable for ranged attacks. If you’re somehow out of mana and evocation is unavailable, your last option is to use Arcane Barrage without all the aforementioned conditions.

Arcane Mage Priority Overview

See, that’s a lot of steps you have to remember and prioritize accordingly. So, I truly recommend you get that weak aura to help you out with that. All right, so now that we are over with the single target priority, let’s move to AoE. Arcane Mage’s AoE is nearly identical to single target priority. You’re still managing the same arcane charges, reacting to procs, and syncing your cooldowns.

But there are a few key differences that change how fast you cycle through your loop. First thing is Arcane Orb gives more charges. As we already said, in AoE, Arcane Orb becomes much more efficient. You gain one charge on a cast and then one charge per target hit. So against three targets, casting orb will give you four arcane charges instantly. No setup required.

The second difference is Aether attunement Missiles cleave. If you have Aether attunement active, Arcane Missiles will hit your main target for 100% extra damage and cleaved up to four additional enemies for 50% extra damage. This ramps up your Arcane Harmony stacks much faster.

And the third difference in AoE, Magi’s spark requires all three spells. Whenever you use Touch of the Magi, make sure to include Arcane Blast, Arcane Barrage, and Arcane Missiles. That’s because of Magi’s spark, a talent that causes all three spells to echo for 100% of their damage when all three land during touch. The spark explodes for massive AOE burst.

So, even in AoE, don’t skip Arcane Blast during your cooldown window. It’s part of the combo. Spellinger Arcane Mage is about learning the flow. Stay active. The spec rewards constant casting. Know your procs: intuition, clear casting, Nether Precision, Arcane Harmony, and Aether attunement all influence when and why you cast the certain spell.

Arcane has a high ceiling, but the path up is straightforward. Build charges, play smart around your procs, and don’t let your buttons sit idle.
