What is up, you guys! It’s Librarian Husky! Today, I have a very special guide for you. This guide is from a veteran’s perspective, aiming to provide what I believe is the perfect start to the game. I will walk you through all the core gameplay mechanics and tools that will be at your disposal from the moment you begin.

Starting Your Journey

Once you’ve chosen the type of server and created your first character, you will be introduced to the game’s tutorial. In this phase, you’ll meet your companion, V, and learn the basics of combat mechanics. As you progress, you’ll encounter your first main storyline character, Mitsuko. The tutorial will guide you through these initial steps, teaching you fundamental skills you’ll need in the game.

Crafting Your First Campsite

You will know you’re nearing the end of the tutorial when you arrive at the mysterious house in the woods. Here, you’ll be tasked with gathering resources to craft your first campsite. The campsite is a vital tool, serving as a mobile respawn point and helping you as you continue your adventure in the game.

Preparing for Major Encounters

I recommend dropping a campsite before every major encounter. In case you die, it will save you a lot of time running around. It’s also a great place to craft basic consumables, armor, and weapons, one of which is the crossbow. I consider it one of the strongest weapons in the game.

The Power of the Crossbow

The crossbow is extremely effective in the early and mid-game, especially with headshots, thanks to its incredible damage multiplier. It’s also great for wildlife and has amazing ammo efficiency. You can recover all the arrows you fire, essentially giving you infinite ammunition.

Facing Your First Big Deviant

Eventually, you’ll face your first major deviant and his minions. This battle is exciting and teaches you more about controlling your deviants. Afterward, you’ll be one step closer to stepping into the real world of Once Human, ready for more challenging gameplay.

Entering the Real World

After a brief in-game cutscene, you’ll seamlessly transition into real-world gameplay. The environment looks stunning, with Star Studios doing an incredible job on the design. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and immersion of the game world around you.

Exploring the World and Setting Up Base

At this point, you are free to explore and drop down at any location to set up your base of operations. However, I recommend making a quick stop first. Let’s get boots on the ground and check out the map. There’s one specific location worth visiting before settling downβ€”Deadsville, the first major settlement you’ll encounter.

Navigating to Deadsville

You can right-click Deadsville to create a Waypoint marker, visible on your mini-map, or use the middle mouse button to create a custom pin if the location doesn’t already have an icon. This feature is useful when hunting down different locations. As you travel, take the opportunity to hunt wildlife using the crossbow, as the pelts will be valuable for crafting armor.

The Importance of Teleporters

Once you reach Deadsville, I want to emphasize the importance of teleporters. They act as fast travel points between different locations on the map. Every major town, including Deadsville, has its own teleporter, and there are also secondary teleporters that you can unlock based on specific map icons.

Unlocking Teleporters and Completing Journey Tasks

If you see a teleporter near an objective, take the extra minute to unlock it. By doing so, you might complete a journey task, which brings valuable rewards. The journeys tab is an excellent resource for gaining extra experience and items. It’s divided into categories based on random tasks you’ll complete, such as collecting controllers and Star Chrome.

The Benefits of Journey Tasks

Journey tasks reward you with items like controllers, Star Chrome, and even exotic weapon or armor blueprints. Completing as many as possible is highly recommended. Be sure to check the journeys tab frequently, as you may have finished tasks without noticing.

Choosing a Base of Operations

Now that the teleporter is unlocked, the next step is finding a good location for your base of operations. You can technically place it anywhere, but one of my favorite spots is a scenic waterfront location. It has a beautiful view and abundant wildlife, perfect for hunting pelts to craft armor.

Ideal Base Location and Resource Availability

This location is perfect because it has plenty of ore types from both the first and second zones, meaning you won’t need to move your base as you progress through the story. Additionally, it’s within walking distance of Deadsville, making it easy to access even without teleportation. I highly recommend checking it out.

Discovering Morphic Chests

On the way to the base location, I encountered an interesting feature: the cradle sensor. When the bubble on the cradle blinks, it means you are near a morphic chest. Use your blink ability to scan the area, and as you get closer, the cradle’s pulse intensifies, eventually revealing the hidden chest.

Dealing with Morphic Chests and Rewards

Early on, these chests are easy to find, but they become more challenging and dangerous as the game progresses, with faster enemies that can attack. Take your time to defeat them, and you’ll be rewarded with seasonal goals and a chest containing stellar plenas, stardust sources, and energy links.

Understanding the Seasonal Goals Tab

The seasonal goals tab is divided into phases, which progressively unlock as the season continues. Completing these goals will provide you with rewards that are essential for progressing through the game. Each phase brings new tasks and challenges for you to complete.

Categories of Seasonal Challenges

There are four main categories of challenges: Territory, Adventures, Secure, and Challenges. These tasks progressively become more difficult as the phases go on. Each category has milestones marked by one, two, and three stars. As you complete the tasks, you will reach these milestones and unlock substantial rewards.

Claiming Rewards and Progressing

When you reach a milestone, you can claim valuable rewards. These include a significant amount of Star Chrome, which is essential for crafting exotic armor and weapon blueprints. Additionally, you earn mimics points, which are crucial for crafting blueprints. Completing these challenges also helps you progress in other areas.

The Butterfly Emissary and Street Cred System

A new feature in the game is the street cred system called the Butterfly Emissary. As you complete seasonal goals, you unlock different tiers of the butterfly, granting your character a badge that showcases your achievements. You can also earn territory decorations, adding an extra layer of personalization to your base.

Reaching the Base Location

After completing various tasks and challenges, you’ll eventually reach your base location. Once there, the only thing left to do is to plant your roots and begin building your base of operations, setting the stage for the rest of your journey.

Building Your Territory Foundations

To begin building, open the build menu by pressing “B” on your keyboard. You’ll see the option to plant your initial territory foundations. Star Studio has streamlined this process, providing four pre-built foundations, along with the securement unit for your butterfly deviant and a territory terminal. You can continue with the story at this point, or choose to build it out further.

Farming Resources for Construction

If you plan to expand your base, you’ll need the necessary materials. Start farming resources early to save time later. Focus on gathering several hundred units of gravel and copper. You can also mine some sulfur for ammunition. No matter which ore you’re mining, you’ll always receive gravel as a byproduct.

Efficient Mining for Gravel

If you don’t see gravel deposits nearby, don’t worry. Mining any nearby rocks will yield gravel in addition to other ores. This ensures you gather the required materials for your base. Keep mining until you have enough resources to continue with your building efforts, setting yourself up for success in the long run.

Gathering Wood for Construction

The next step is to gather wood. Find the nearest large tree and start chopping. You’ll need more wood than ore, so aim for at least 1,000 units, but preferably closer to 2,000. Taking the time to gather enough wood now will save you plenty of time later. After a few swings, you’ll reach level three, earning more Mimic Points, which leads us to the next important task.

Spending Mimic Points

Once you’ve accumulated Mimic Points, hit “O” and navigate to the Mimics tab. Here, you can choose from four categories: Infrastructure, Crafting, Logistics, and Building. The Building category contains essential formulas for creating different building materials, including wooden support beams, which we’ll need next. Let’s claim that one.

Additional Building Options

While you’re in the Mimics tab, it’s also a good idea to claim wooden roofs, windows, doors, and door frames. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even unlock wooden stairs for multi-story buildings. However, for this demonstration, we’ll stick to building a single-story structure.

Choosing Early Crafting Essentials

There’s no need to rush into picking up everything right away. However, some important items to grab early include the stove from the crafting tab, which allows you to start preparing food early in the game. It’s also a good idea to pick up the supplies workbench, gear workbench, and ammunition crafting.

Focusing on Infrastructure

In the infrastructure tab, prioritize smelting essentials as you’ll need a furnace to begin smelting resources. Also, be sure to unlock the disassembly techniques for your disassembly bench, which is crucial for breaking down junk and salvage materials. This bench converts loot from towns and territories into useful materials for crafting.

Expanding Your Base Foundations

Now that you have the necessary mimic blueprints and materials, it’s time to start building. Open your build menu and select foundations. I recommend expanding the base beyond the default layout, opting for a 3×3 grid to give yourself more room to work with. This extra space will make future expansions easier and more efficient.

Building Your Base Walls and Windows

The first step is to choose your walls. Select them from the build menu and start placing them around your foundation. Once the walls are set up, you can place your windows and door frame. I like to add a window in the middle of each wall, with two windows in the front and the door in the center of the front entrance.

Adding Ceiling Tiles and Roofs

Next, add ceiling tiles, which are useful for hanging lights and running wires. If you want to replace anything you’ve built, use “R” to dismantle it and get some materials refunded. For now, let’s move on to the roofing. Select roofing tiles and place the middle flat roofs and corner roofs to complete the structure.

Finalizing the Interior and Adding the Furnace

With the roof in place, you now have a cozy home to start adding workstations and supplies. The next step is to build a furnace. Open the build menu again, select the furnace, and place it inside your territory. Once it’s built, gather a big stack of coal to fuel your crafting process and continue building out your base.

Crafting Copper Ingots and Building the Disassembly Bench

Once we have enough resources, we can craft copper ingots. After the copper ingots are ready, it’s time to build the disassembly bench. Select it from the build menu and place it in your base. Completing this task also earns you another journey milestone, so be sure to check your journey tab and claim any unclaimed experience.

Reaching Level Four and Unlocking New Blueprints

After claiming the experience, you’ll likely reach level four and earn more Mimetic Points. Open the mimetic tree and select new blueprints. I recommend unlocking copper axes and basic gear, as we’ll soon be crafting our first secondary weapon. This is a good time to grab the supplies workbench as well, and place it in your base.

Preparing for the Next Steps

Although we’re ready to craft the gear workbench, we need more spare parts to do so. The next task is to teleport to Deadsville and make your way toward the next main story objective. If you’re following the Waypoint from the Deadsville entrance, you should come across a small camera tripod setup along the way.

Riddle Chest Location and Seasonal Goals

This is a riddle chest location, and you’ll encounter several of these across the map. This one features a Simon Says-style game where you mimic the emote your doppelganger performs. Completing this challenge unlocks some valuable loot. Be sure to collect it on your way to the objective, and you’ll also complete another seasonal goal, earning you Mitsuko Marks.

Claiming Star Milestones and Mimic Points

After completing the challenge, claim your first star milestone reward, which grants you a chunk of Star Chrome and 10 additional Mimic Points. These can be used later on to unlock more crafting and building options as you progress through the game.

Quest Chests and Gathering Junk

Once you reach your destination, look for two specific quest chests. One will be inside a nearby building. As you explore, pick up as much junk as possible. A useful tip is to frequently use your finger snap ability, which highlights nearby small junk. This allows you to instantly gather all highlighted items with a single click, speeding up the process.

Completing the Mission and Teleporting Back to Base

After collecting the final chest, the only remaining task is to head over to Mary and complete the mission. Before teleporting back to base, take note of a floating purple crystal nearby, which may play a role in future quests.

Jumping Puzzle Mechanics and Mystical Crates

Right behind where Mary was standing, you’ll find a unique jumping puzzle. These puzzles are scattered across the map, and completing them unlocks mystical crates containing useful rewards. To solve them, collect all the crystals in the correct sequence. Make sure to grab these whenever you encounter them, as they offer valuable items.

Unlocking Mimetic Specializations at Level Five

Upon reaching level five, you unlock your first Mimetic Specialization. These are random bonus perks that enhance certain in-game features. For example, one specialization reduces the weight of logs and ores in your backpack by 40%. These perks can be useful and are designed for you to work with your team to optimize buffs.

Re-rolling Specializations and Preparing for Gear Crafting

If you’re not satisfied with the specializations you receive, don’t worryβ€”you’ll have opportunities to re-roll them later. Now that we’ve covered specializations, it’s time to return to base and craft the gears workbench, as we’re ready to make a new weapon. At this stage, you can choose any weapon, but I have a particular favorite that I recommend crafting.

Choosing and Crafting Your Weapon

I recommend crafting either the submachine gun or the assault rifle, with the assault rifle being my personal favorite. After crafting the weapon, head to the supplies workbench to craft a copper pickaxe, which we unlocked earlier, and some ammunition to go along with your new weapon. Once these tasks are complete, our longstanding “Eve of Evolution” quest will finally be finished.

Talking to Mary and Learning About Rift Anchors

The next step is to head to Deadsville for a more serious conversation with Mary. Upon arrival, you’ll speak with a few NPCs. During your final conversation with Mary, she’ll explain Rift Anchors, which are keys that unlock greater monoliths, where the Rift entity bosses for each zone are located. These bosses will be our next big objective.

Obtaining Mary’s Motorcycle and Side Quests

Before moving forward, Mary offers you her motorcycle to help with travel, so be sure to grab that. You’ll also want to pick up any remaining side quests in the area. Then, head over to Larry Deval to discuss commissions, a key aspect of the game that you’ll need to focus on moving forward.

The Importance of Commissions

Commissions are vital to your progress in the game. You receive five commissions per week, and these will be critical in earning resources and advancing through the different phases of gameplay. Be sure to make the most of them as you continue your journey.

The Importance of Weekly Commissions

Commissions are the largest source of experience in the game. It’s essential to complete all five commissions each week. Focus on those that you can finish quickly to maximize your rewards. For each completed commission, you’ll earn a substantial amount of experience and energy links. Once all five are done, return to town to collect an additional 2,500 experience points, which can easily result in gaining three to four levels.

Preparing for Battle with New Armor

Before clearing out your first settlement, I recommend crafting a full set of new armor to complement your new weapon. Head back to your base and craft a helmet, chest piece, gloves, boots, mask, and legs. If you’re short on materials, check nearby points of interest to gather what you need. By hovering over a location’s icon, you can see the type of drops available there.

Crafting the Final Armor Pieces

Once you’ve gathered the necessary materials from nearby locations, return to base to craft the missing armor pieces. With your full set of armor complete, you’ll be well-prepared for any deviant that comes your way, making future battles much more manageable.

Exploring Your First Settlement

Let’s get ready and head out to our first settlement. At this stage, the game really opens up, giving players freedom. If you’re following the story, the first settlement to encounter is likely Rock Manor. Here, you’ll get a glimpse of what the upcoming boss fight will be like and snag your first Rift Anchor. After that, you can choose from any of the remaining seven or eight settlements to collect the last three Rift Anchors you need.

Choosing Your Next Settlement

I chose to head to Overlook Town because the Rift Anchor is easy to locateβ€”right at the entrance with a giant purple beam of light, making it hard to miss. Every Rift Anchor location will be marked similarly. Make these anchors your top priority when visiting new settlements to ensure you progress through the story efficiently.

Completing Mini Objectives and Looting Settlements

Each new settlement comes with several mini objectives, visible under the purple text in the top left corner of the screen. Make sure to complete all these objectives, as they provide great opportunities to find weapon and armor crates for new equipment and ammunition. You’ll also encounter mysterious chests, which are particularly important for gathering valuable rewards.

Hunting for Mysterious Chests and Blueprints

Mysterious chests can be quite well-hidden, sometimes located on rooftops, in basements, or tucked away in obscure corners. The reason you should actively seek these out is that they often contain valuable blueprints. These blueprints are essential for crafting the best armor and weapons later in the game. Even though you only need four Rift Anchors for now, you’ll eventually want to return to clear out all the remaining settlements to collect every mysterious chest.

Benefits of Collecting Extra Blueprints

Collecting all the mysterious chests not only unlocks more blueprints but also gives you the ability to upgrade stronger blueprints in the future. Any blueprints you don’t need now can be used to enhance others down the road, making it highly beneficial to clear out every settlement in search of these chests. It will pay off in the long run.

Entering the Monolith Facility

With four or more Rift Anchors in hand, it’s time to enter the Monolith Facility. Head over to talk to Mary to start the process. Once inside, focus on eliminating enemies and completing secondary purple objectives. Be sure to activate the teleporter along the way so you can return later for higher difficulty boss fights.

Preparing for the Final Fight

After clearing the enemies and objectives, you’ll reach the summit. Make sure to grab the teleporter to make future visits easier. Once you’ve done that, proceed into the Monolith and prepare for the final battle against the boss.

Boss Difficulty Tiers

When you open the boss menu for the first time, you’ll notice three different difficulty tiers: normal mode, hard mode, and pro mode. Hard and pro modes are for later-game challenges, where you can fight the boss again for rare loot, but the level requirements are much higher than where we are now. For now, we’ll focus on normal mode, which requires level 10.

Preparing for the Boss Fight

If you’ve been following along with this guide, you should be high enough level to take on the boss. Open the menu and start the encounter. The first time I fought the Ravenous Hunter, it was an exciting experience, and I encourage you to enjoy it without spoilers. Use the skills you’ve learned along the way, and you’ll have the Rift entity defeated in no time.

Rewards and Loot After the Fight

Once you’ve taken down the Rift entity, you’ll be rewarded with a ton of great loot, including new mods, a new weapon, and even a new deviant for your collection. These rewards will be invaluable as you progress through the game.

The Role of Deviants

Deviants are helpful creatures scattered throughout the world of Once Human. After defeating the boss, you’ll have a new deviant to care for. Some deviants aid in combat, others help with your territory, and some even unlock exclusive recipes. Make sure to find a resting place for your new deviant companion.
