Iron Man is a flying dualist who loves to rain down rockets on enemies and take control of the skies. His kit is quite simple: his left click is a repulsor blast that deals AOE damage; his right click is a hitscan unibeam that’s perfect for eliminating single targets; his shift ability lets you fly around at high speeds; his E ability activates hyperdrive mode, supercharging both his left and right clicks; and his ultimate is the biggest nuke in the game. Let’s go over each ability and learn how to use them effectively.

Left Click: Repulsor Blast

Your left click has infinite range, which allows Iron Man to contribute to team fights from a very safe distance, as long as you maintain line of sight. Therefore, you should never feel pressured to invade an enemy’s personal space. This left click will be your primary source of damage output; it deals substantial damage on direct hits and still provides decent damage if you catch enemies in the AOE blast.

Leading Your Shots

Keep in mind that your left click shots have travel time, so you’ll need to lead your shots and aim where the enemy will be, not where they currently are. Reading enemy movements can be challenging at first, but it is extremely rewarding, as landing direct hits with your left click deals significantly more damage.

Iron Man’s Abilities and Strategies

Now, his right-click is his unibeam, which will be your primary tool for winning duels and taking out single targets. When playing as Iron Man, you should never intentionally put yourself in close range of an enemy; however, if someone is getting into your personal space, your unibeam does significantly more damage to single targets than your left-click blast and requires decent aim to maximize its damage. Your E ability is called Armor Overdrive, which enhances all of your non-ultimate abilities.

Utilizing Armor Overdrive

Overdrive increases the damage of your left and right-click abilities, granting you much better DPS output. When activated, it greatly increases your potential to win 1v1s. However, activating your E disables your abilities as this transformation animation plays, making you extremely vulnerable; therefore, you can’t really activate E when you’re already in a fight. You should always try to duck behind cover when activating E and only come out once this white bar appears.

Positioning and Timing

This minimizes how vulnerable you are during your transformation and can allow you to surprise enemies when you emerge from cover all powered up. It’s essential to keep an eye on that Overdrive charge meter because you have another transformation once it ends, which again locks you out of using abilities. Your E greatly increases your chances of getting a pick and steamrolling a fight; thus, you should really be looking to use it off cooldown.

Aggressive and Defensive Playstyles

When your E is active, you should position yourself more forward and look for aggressive picks; when it’s on cooldown, hang back a little and play for safer chip damage.

Iron Man’s Shift Ability

His shift ability is a flight mode, which lets you boost around at a faster pace. This ability can be used to get you out of spawn and into the action faster; it allows you to reposition for a better angle to spam rockets from and can serve as an escape mechanism if you’re losing a duel or taking too much fire. Your flight mode has a limited amount of fuel, which you need to monitor, and using flight mode disables all your other abilities, so don’t expect to fly around with guns blazing. However, while in flight mode, you gain access to close-range missiles that pepper the ground below you. These missiles have a 12-second cooldown, do minimal damage, and there’s no reliable way to consistently hit enemies because the fire pattern is random. Therefore, you should not prioritize using these missiles as they are an inefficient way to deal damage. However, using them while in overdrive mode after activating your E ability makes them significantly more useful since it allows you to aim them with your cursor and greatly increases the damage output.

Iron Man’s Ultimate Ability

Iron Man’s ultimate is the pulse cannon, which devastates a massive area, dealing enough damage to obliterate an entire enemy team. The ultimate can instantly one-shot anyone in the direct blast zone and still deal substantial damage to anyone in the larger blast radius. This ultimate is particularly effective against clumped-up teams; however, it does have a windup period that allows enemy teams to react by either scattering, blocking it with shields, disrupting you with crowd control effects such as Luna Snow’s freeze, or even worse, reflecting it back at you with Captain America.

Understanding Iron Man’s Abilities

Be aware of these abilities before using your ultimate; remember that utilizing it also places a massive target on you, as you’re locked in place while shooting. However, the duration is not as long as something like Scarlet Witch’s; enemies only have about two seconds to react. Use your ability to fly and traverse the map in ways that most characters can’t to find a flank, an off-angle, or even fire it from directly above them. Landing a perfect six-man ultimate and wiping out an enemy team is always satisfying, but it can be difficult to find that perfect shot. Taking out one or two key enemies can be just as effective in winning the team fight, and Iron Man charges his ultimate very quickly due to his area-of-effect damage; so use your ultimate liberally.

Iron Man’s Strengths as a Hero

Now let’s talk about some of Iron Man’s strengths as a hero. One of the biggest advantages of playing flying characters is maintaining a permanent high ground advantage. You create another threat to the enemy that is separate from your team, forcing them to take fire from angles that ground characters could never shoot from. This dynamic forces the enemy to split their attention between you and your allies on the ground, dividing their damage and reducing their potential to knock out either of you. Eventually, the enemy team will grow tired of receiving repulsor blasts from above; they may send Star-Lord or another DPS hero to contest your high ground. However, Tony has prepared for this scenario because your right-click ability absolutely melts flyers at close distance, especially if you can sneak in your overdrive before engaging them in battle.

Iron Man’s Offensive Strategy

Iron Man’s left click lets him safely deal chip damage to multiple enemies from an extremely safe distance since it has infinite range. This allows you to soften up several enemies at once for your hitscan or dive DPS teammates to finish them off. You want to be like a little mosquito, constantly peppering the enemy team with left clicks and forcing them to focus on you, which takes some of the heat off your team.

Weaknesses of Playing Iron Man

Now let’s discuss some of the weaker areas of playing Iron Man. He is a slow character that can be easily targeted by hitscan characters such as Punisher and Hela. Iron Man is very vulnerable when out in the open sky, making him easy to eliminate; therefore, it is crucial to always utilize cover. Avoid peeking the same spot repeatedly, as following the same pattern can make you predictable and an easy target. Instead, vary the timing of your peeks and use your omnidirectional movement to approach from different angles.

Health Management

As a mostly immobile flyer, Iron Man can be difficult to heal for many strategists. He is much more dependent on health packs than most DPS characters for these reasons, making it essential to always know the location of the nearest health pack in case your armor takes too much damage.

Counter Strategies

Iron Man’s biggest counterpick is Spider-Man. If you see Spider-Man or hear the web whips, it may be best to swap heroes or, at the very least, play extremely safe. If Spider-Man lands his combo on you—and he likely will—you are most probably done for.

Iron Man’s Vulnerabilities and Strengths

One of Iron Man’s weaknesses is how vulnerable he makes himself. His overdrive ability locks him out of firing both on startup and at the end; his laser has a windup; his reload isn’t super fast; his ultimate has a windup; and all of this gives Iron Man a lot of time where he’s exposed. For instance, once you’re locked into your laser animation, it is easy for characters like the Hulk to jump on you. So keep a safe distance and be very selective when engaging.

Synergy with Other Characters

Iron Man pairs up really well with Mantis, especially if you communicate with her to receive her passive damage boost. This combination, along with your overdrive, provides some of the highest DPS and pick potential in the game. Additionally, teaming up with Hulk works similarly by boosting your damage and allowing for faster KOs.
