Whether you’re a frontline powerhouse creating space, a precision DPS maximizing damage, or a strategist guiding your team to victory, this guide will provide you with the insights and strategies needed to excel. Together, we’ll explore the nuances of each role and how they harmonize for ultimate team success. Let’s dive into the battlefield and uncover what it takes to dominate every match!

Understanding Roles in Marvel Rivals

Let’s get back into the tips. I will provide insights for tanks, DPS, and supports, but I highly encourage you to pay attention to all roles. Even if you don’t play a specific role, understanding each one will make you a better teammate and player by learning how each role functions, their playstyles, and useful strategies for each.

The Role of Tanks: Pushing and Pulling

First off, regarding tanks, it is essential to grasp the concept of pushing and pulling. A tank’s primary responsibility is to take what we call “space,” referring to areas on the map that you want to occupy and control. This includes places from which you can deal damage or heal your teammates. Essentially, any location that can be contested or occupied is considered space. A tank that effectively creates this space provides their teammates with numerous options.

Understanding the Role of Tanks in Gameplay

If you’re ever in a game that feels like no matter where you go, what you do, enemies are there, and you almost feel claustrophobic moving around the map, that’s because there’s no space. It’s a tank’s job to create that space, even if they are being assisted by their team.

The Mechanics of Tanking

The reason tanks are crucial is that they are the characters who don’t instantly die if they are not next to cover; they can actually absorb damage. That’s what they do—it’s tanking. They won’t instantly perish because they have relatively high health totals and typically some form of mitigation, whether it’s a shield, a barrier, or a bubble. Whatever it is, it helps them perform their role effectively.

Pushing and Pulling: Tactical Movement

The concept of pushing and pulling involves advancing when you have an advantage and retreating when you face a disadvantage. Think of each team as two equally sized entities of mass or power. When they collide, they typically trade damage, healing, abilities, and even ultimates; however, eventually something gives. Someone will die, get picked off, be low on health, or exhaust their cooldowns.

Strategic Positioning for Tanks

As a tank player, you need to identify which team has the advantage and respond with your positioning accordingly. If your team is at a disadvantage, you should back up, give ground, and create space. This is because when two forces collide, the side with less strength will crumble under pressure. For example, if there are six players on one team who run directly into three players from the opposing team, those three players standing their ground will likely be annihilated.

Understanding Team Dynamics in Combat

In combat scenarios, it’s crucial to recognize that players can be overwhelmed if they push too aggressively. For instance, if three individuals on your team continue to retreat, they may eventually force the enemy to overextend themselves. This could lead to advantageous situations, such as isolating a player in a 3v1. By buying time for teammates to regroup, you can shift the tide of battle.

The Role of the Tank

The primary responsibility of a tank is to assess the advantages and disadvantages of both their team and the enemy. This requires a keen understanding of the current state of the fight. As a tank, you dictate the terms of engagement—when, how, and where to fight. It’s vital to keep track of the number of players on each side, knowing who is dead and who is alive. This situational awareness is an essential skill.

Tracking Enemy Resources

Being aware of the health status of all enemy players and monitoring their resources, such as ultimate abilities and cooldowns, can provide significant strategic advantages. For example, if you notice that an enemy player lacks their ultimate ability, they become vulnerable to attacks. Coordinating with your team to capitalize on these moments can lead to successful engagements.

Impact of Ultimates on Team Strength

Finally, it’s important to consider the impact of opponent ultimates that significantly enhance their team’s power. For instance, if an enemy uses an ultimate ability that boosts health or damage for their entire team, this can drastically increase their advantage in battle. Understanding these dynamics is key to making informed decisions during combat.

Understanding Power Dynamics in Combat

What does that mean? If their team is now instead of like a six of power, it’s a seven or eight of power—do you want your team of six or five to run into that? No! Because the larger amount always wins! Right? When they collide, the greater power will prevail. So what do you do as a tank? You back up; you allow the enemy to push in; you allow the enemy to invest the resources; you give ground as much as you possibly can until those things end—the ultimate ends; the things stop—that is what’s super important! If you run face first into opponents doing that, you are forcing your team to fight in a situation that you’re not going to win because you’re at a huge disadvantage.

The Importance of Corners and Cover

The next up is the idea of corners and cover. A tank has mitigation abilities and they also have the ability to take damage and not instantly die; but that being said, you can’t do this for a very long time. Oftentimes you have cooldowns that protect you; oftentimes you need to give your supports time to heal you; and this means that you need to be playing around corners and cover. Natural cover are the areas on the map that not only block enemies’ line of sight but also block damage; ideally you want to be standing around a piece of natural cover so that if you need to, you can stop fighting an opponent temporarily while your team actually heals you, brings you back to full, or you get your cooldowns back.

Managing Resources in Combat

If you are engaging enemies in the open 24/7, you’re going to run out of your natural resources; you’re going to run out of your cooldowns; you’re going to force your supports to pocket you; and you’re going to fall over and die—and the fight’s going to be lost because of you.

Understanding Tanking Dynamics

You might be saying, “Hey! I’m standing on the objective! I’m doing what I’m supposed to!” However, every time a tank achieves something, it often needs to be done in waves based on their health, cooldowns, and team resources. Just like we discussed the dynamics of pushing and pulling in team fights, there is also a balance between your ability to fight and your decision not to fight at any given moment.

There will be times when you don’t contest an objective; there will also be moments when you allow opponents to gain a tick or push an objective to a certain point because you’re not ready to engage yet. This again relates to the advantage/disadvantage of your current state—having low HP, a support who can’t assist you, and lacking cooldowns means you should avoid engaging a force that has more resources than you. Instead, you want to kite back, prevent the fight, or delay it until you’re prepared to engage on even ground or in an advantageous position. This concept is fundamental to tanking: knowing when to fight and when to avoid combat entirely while positioning yourself strategically to make those decisions.

Having cover nearby—such as a corner—means that if you need to retreat temporarily, you can use that cover for protection. One effective strategy is to play around corners and choke points. If enemies attempt to funnel through a choke or around a corner, you can leverage that corner for protection. This forces an enemy chasing you to isolate themselves from their supporting allies behind them.

Understanding Corners and Lines of Sight

If you’re playing a corner and the corner is within the line of sight of your supports, for instance, and the opponents try to push through or around that corner to continuously deal damage to you, after they get you low, they will be leaving their support’s line of sight right into your team’s line of sight. This means that you have a fundamental advantage in that situation.

Objectives vs. Space

Understanding corners and the lines of sight between you, your team, and the enemy tanks is crucial for winning consistent damage trades and gaining an edge over many tanks that aren’t paying attention to these details. Now, let’s discuss the idea of objectives versus space. There will be times when a tank is not running straight to the objective. While capping an objective is the ultimate goal, it often results from winning a team fight. Typically, you want to win a fight, wipe the enemy team, and then capture any objectives.

The Balance Between Battles and War

Throughout a round or game, you will encounter many team fights. There is a common saying: “You won the battle but lost the war.” The idea behind this is that if you run straight to the point and perhaps win the battle by capturing a tick, you may still lose the fight if you fail to contest someone on high ground or another key position. So, while you may have won the battle by getting the tick on the objective, you’ve ultimately lost the war and been wiped out with no value gained. Your opponents may have accumulated more ultimates than you, leading to losses in subsequent fights and ultimately losing the game!

The Strengths of Tanks

Remember all those strengths we discussed regarding tanks—how they have extra health and damage mitigation? This enables them to access certain areas that other characters would have to risk their lives to reach.

Understanding the Role of a Tank

In gameplay, consider a scenario where a Hela is positioned on a high ground bridge alone. Characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, or Mantis who wish to challenge her face significant risks. The Hela can stun and attack them, so while taking risks is sometimes necessary, it’s crucial to recognize that anyone attempting to force her off the bridge must be prepared to jeopardize their own safety.

The Consequences of Inaction

If the Hela remains uncontested on the bridge, she can easily target and eliminate your entire team. Therefore, it becomes imperative for someone to take action. However, characters such as Thor, Hulk, or Venom are unlikely to perish while contesting the Hela if she is alone. This highlights a fundamental responsibility of a tank: driving enemies away from key control areas to facilitate a more manageable engagement for your team.

Strategic Positioning

Instead of rushing directly to the objective point, tanks should focus on controlling advantageous positions. By forcing opponents off strategic high ground, you enable your teammates to advance and assist you more effectively. Ignoring the Hela and proceeding straight to the point could lead to disastrous outcomes where teammates fall victim to her attacks. Alternatively, by contesting her position, you can help prevent unnecessary deaths and allow your team to support you during the objective fight.

Responsibilities of a Tank

Tanking entails numerous responsibilities. By executing these strategies effectively, you can create challenging scenarios for your opponents while ensuring favorable matchups for your team. This strategic approach is essential for achieving victory in gameplay dynamics.

Understanding the Role of a Tank

Tanking is often considered one of the most challenging carry roles. By effectively setting up plays, a tank can significantly enhance the performance of their team, even if the DPS or support players are not at their best. The tank creates opportunities for teammates, making their jobs easier and increasing the chances of winning. Forcing teammates to overperform when the tank could handle the situation more safely is unnecessary.

Tips for DPS Players

DPS players also have important considerations to keep in mind. There are vital tips that can help improve your performance, whether you’re playing a main character or filling a role. The first step is to understand the objective of your composition. With many DPS characters available, randomly selecting them can lead to poor team synergy. Each composition has specific goals, and adapting your play style or choosing appropriate DPS characters can help the team achieve success.

Types of Compositions

Different types of compositions exist within the game. One common type is the dive composition, which consists of characters designed to jump onto enemies, especially targeting supports in the backline. These characters rely on their mobility to strategically eliminate threats. Another type is poke composition, where characters deal damage from a distance, gradually wearing down enemy resources. Lastly, there are brawl compositions that favor close-range combat, engaging opponents directly on the frontline.

Understanding Team Dynamics in Combat

In combat scenarios, it is crucial to understand the strategies and play styles of your teammates. Are they adopting a mobility-focused approach, engaging in mid-range battles, or keeping their distance? Identifying the tanks your teammates are playing can provide insight into their intended tactics. For instance, if your team has Venom and Hulk, they are likely to engage directly with the enemy backline. If you choose a character that does not complement this plan, it can lead to anti-synergy.

The Importance of Team Synergy

Consider a situation where Venom and Hulk dive into the backline against Mantis and Luna. They are drawing out critical resources such as heals and cooldowns. While this may not guarantee a kill, it leaves the enemy backline vulnerable. Characters like Black Panther, Psylocke, or Magic can then capitalize on this opportunity without fear of counterattacks. This illustrates how valuable tank synergy can be, allowing DPS characters to execute their roles effectively.

Prioritizing Survival Over Aggression

It is essential for DPS players to prioritize living over aggressive plays. While it is common for DPS to take risks—like flanking or pushing up—they must balance aggression with survival. If a DPS player dies frequently, it can hinder their ability to impact fights. Understanding when to be aggressive and when to hold back is vital for maintaining control over angles and supporting the team.

Managing Risks in Combat

As a DPS, you must be aware of the risks associated with dying. If you have low deaths, you can influence more fights positively. However, if you find yourself frequently isolated from your team or engaged in 1v2 or 1v3 situations, it indicates a fundamental error in positioning and strategy. Always consider whether you can execute aggressive plays without relying on your teammates for support.

Understanding Effective Ranges

Every hero has a unique effective range in which they excel. For example, Black Panther performs best in close quarters, while Hawkeye is more effective at long distances. Understanding these dynamics is essential for positioning during engagements and ensuring that each character can contribute optimally to the fight.
