Welcome, fellow heroes! I’m Librarian Husky, and today we’re diving into the electrifying world of Thor, the ultimate carry character. Whether you’re aiming to dominate the battlefield or elevate your gameplay to godlike levels, this guide is here to provide you with the knowledge and strategies you need. From mastering Thor’s abilities to leveraging his unique playstyle, we’ll cover everything you need to make an impact and carry your team to victory. Let’s harness the power of the God of Thunder and begin!
Understanding Thor’s Passive Ability: Thor Force
First, we need to discuss Thor’s passive ability, Thor Force. After using any ability, if you hit your enemies back, you’ll generate one Thor Force. You’ll actually see little hammers in front of your character; one of them will be highlighted with a white glow when you can hit an enemy and gain a piece of Thor Force back. You also slowly regenerate your Thor Force over time, and this will be crucial for using any of your abilities.
The Importance of Thor Force
Thor Force is your bread and butter, so it’s essential to learn how it works. Whenever you use one Thor Force, you’ll gain 100 HP. This happens whenever you use any ability that consumes one Thor Force, providing a boost of 100 HP. However, when you use all three at the same time, specifically with your ability Awakening Rune, you’ll gain 200 HP.

Understanding Thor’s Abilities
Using all three abilities simultaneously will not increase your damage to 300; you are actually capped at 200. Furthermore, the primary move, Bash, will now serve as a basic hit, but it will also generate Thor Force after using an ability. This can be combined with his Ultra Thor Hammer. The Thor Hammer inflicts 70 damage on impact or 30 damage when returning to Thor if it fails to hit the target, costing one Thor Force to use. If you hit an enemy afterward, you will regenerate that Thor Force. Utilizing this from close range is particularly effective, especially when animation canceling his primary attack. By using the primary alternate, which combines the hammer throw with the primary attack, you can achieve a burst of additional damage while instantly regaining that Thor Force and gaining 100 HP.
Strategic Use of Hammer Throw
Employing the hammer throw from a distance is only advantageous if the enemy is at one HP. If your goal is merely to regain health, it is more beneficial to use your movement ability, which also restores 100 HP. Generally, it is unwise to waste Thor Force that you cannot recover, as this limits your ability to use other skills or your Awakening Rune, which is Thor’s most powerful ability. Therefore, in most situations, it is advisable to use the hammer throw at close range to generate combos and consistently recover Thor Force, reserving its use from range primarily for enemies at low health.
Storm Surge: Thor’s Powerful Movement Ability
Now his movement is called Storm Surge, and this is extremely powerful because not only does it allow Thor to move around the map, but it also serves as a tool to push enemies into specific areas. He can displace enemies, positioning them strategically; perhaps he wants to push an enemy away from his team or to maneuver an enemy tank towards his allies. With all these options, one of the most effective tactics with Thor is to drop down from high ground, pushing an enemy—like Doctor Strange—into his team, catching them out of position. They may believe they are safe while playing a certain corner or area on the map, but suddenly they find themselves closer to Thor’s team. This ability uses one Thor Force, granting 100 HP as well; if you hit an enemy afterward, you’ll regain that Thor Force. This allows you to pin someone, hit them, regain Thor Force, pin them again, and repeat the cycle while gaining health.
Movement and Damage Mechanics
You will move 10 meters with no charge or 20 meters at full charge; hitting an enemy will move them 6 meters with no charge or 13 meters with a charge. Additionally, damage varies from no charge to full charge, dealing 40 damage with no charge and 60 damage at full charge. One deceptive aspect of Storm Surge is that it makes Thor unexpectedly tanky and difficult to kill. Many opponents will chase him down, trying to focus their attacks; however, not only can he move in any direction, but he will also continuously receive bursts of 100 HP.
Thor’s Movement and Evasion Mechanics
Imagine you’re jumping up in one direction, dashing to another; using it to move all around—you can even do it straight down. You move in a very unpredictable way while gaining a burst of health each time. This makes it challenging for enemies to defeat you, and I enjoy outmaneuvering opponents with Thor as they constantly chase you without being able to finish you off. Additionally, you can maintain aerial superiority, play The High Ground, and clear enemies from elevated positions—this ability is incredibly strong and one of the best aspects of playing Thor.
Awakening Rune: Thor’s Key Ability
Thor’s Awakening Rune is his bread and butter; it’s an enhancement mode for an ability, but you need all three Thor Force to activate it. When used, you’ll receive a 200 HP buff, making you significantly tankier. The ability deals 70 damage initially, plus an additional 30 damage over time to nearby enemies. In close range, this means you can inflict substantial damage. The output is so high that you can eliminate multiple enemies; if you manage to hit three targets—even with healing—you can burst them down. If you find an opportunity to get close to a vulnerable enemy, you can pin them down, strike, regain your Thor Force, and activate the Awakening Rune mode. Even if they receive support, you can still take them out due to the sheer amount of damage you’re dealing. You’re firing large projectiles that are easy to hit from close range, creating a powerful advantage in combat.
Strategic Use of Abilities
You can send this ability downrange or to areas with specific cover to potentially secure kills or apply significant pressure while your team is engaged. It serves multiple purposes: exerting pressure on the front line, sniping from a distance, and generally applying stress to opponents. You may achieve long-range kills or isolate and eliminate targets. Some off-angle flanking plays are viable due to the high damage output and the HP gained in 1v1 scenarios. When you activate this ability, you can dominate your opponents; you’re tanky, deal substantial damage—it’s overwhelming!
Risks Involved
However, this ability is a double-edged sword; you lack a way to cancel it. Once activated, you become immobile for a period, meaning that if you are overwhelmed by multiple enemies, you cannot retreat to higher ground or escape around a corner. It’s crucial to remember that you’re not invincible just because you’re beefy. Additionally, after using this ability, your Thor Force will be depleted, so unless your abilities are cycling quickly to replenish it, you won’t be prepared to flee. Typically, you will need to stay close to enemies to hit them or utilize your Lightning R ability, which will be discussed shortly. In situations where you are under heavy fire from a distance, regenerating Thor Force will be challenging, putting you at risk of being trapped and eliminated.
Understanding the Lightning Realm
So yeah, keep those things in mind—a double-edged sword—but still super strong. Now for recovery, he has Lightning Realm, which is his sphere; it’s going to do 40 damage to enemies inside, and it has a 12-second cooldown. Although it has a significant cooldown, if enemies are present when you activate it, you’ll gain one point of Thor Force. If there are two or more enemies, you’ll essentially regain all your Thor Force. You can use it strategically in corners or areas where enemies are congregating, allowing you to regain your Thor Force and activate your Awakening Rune to maximize damage output. Additionally, this ability will slow enemies crossing the boundary by 30%. When they are slowed and taking damage, they will be easier targets for your Awakening Rune shots, making it difficult for them to escape, leading to quick eliminations.
Utilizing Corners and Choke Points
It’s also highly effective in corners and choke points, especially during encounters with other tanks like Doctor Strange. You can deploy it in a choke point, making it challenging for him to advance due to the slowing effect. This allows you to engage him effectively in that confined space, dealing significant damage while preventing his forward momentum.
The God of Thunder Ultimate
Now, his ultimate—God of Thunder—was initially considered a weak ability that could be countered by numerous threats until the Season One buffs, which have generated considerable excitement! Now he gains crowd control resistance during his ultimate; this means Bucky cannot hook him, and he cannot be devoured by Jeff the Shark. This improvement is significant! I can’t emphasize enough how much better this ultimate is compared to its previous state! It deals damage to enemies directly beneath him, and players can adjust their height before slamming down, resulting in substantial damage to foes located below.
Understanding Ultimate Mechanics
Now you have to be right on top of people to kill anything; this is not going to do a ton of damage if you’re not right over the top of somebody—but you’ve got to set that up with your movement. You move, fly above someone, and try to bait out their movement ability first. For example, if they have a certain movement ability—like Hawkeye has a leap—you need to bait that out before you fly above him and use your ultimate because you want to create a checkmate scenario where he can’t escape.
Baiting Abilities
The same principle applies to someone like Neymar: bait out his bubble first before you fly above him and use your ultimate! Don’t get too greedy with this ultimate; just getting one person with it is amazing! Additionally, there are some supports that you can bait out their support ultimates—like Mantis—who can’t run away after she uses her fade! These opportunities are great for either eliminating opponents after they use their defensive ultimates or paving the way for a more powerful ultimate, such as Pyu’s or Star-Lord’s. If you set it up right, your ultimate can still bait out these strong ultimates, resulting in a favorable trade for you.
Countering Opponent Ultimates
Your ultimate is also extremely effective at countering other ultimates—specifically Adam Warlock’s. You can counter this all by yourself because the opponents will be resurrected relatively low and clustered in the same spot. By flying above them and using your ultimate, you can shut down that entire ultimate! In the case of Jeff the Shark’s ultimate, you won’t even be crowd-controlled! When he activates his ultimate right on top of you and your team, you can respond with your own ultimate—you won’t get eaten; instead, you’ll slam down on him, eliminate him, and save your whole team! It’s truly amazing! I’m incredibly excited about this buff—it’s unreal!

Thor’s Role in Gameplay
Thor is not what we would call a main tank; he does not want to be frontlining alone. There are many tanks capable of doing that—let’s take Doctor Strange or Magneto, for instance—these characters have ways to defend themselves, such as shields and mitigation bubbles. Thor lacks those defenses; while he can gain HP, he has nothing that allows him to stand in the open. Therefore, if you plan to stand in the open as a tank, you do not want it to be Thor!
Thor’s Unique Abilities
However, Thor can do many things that other tanks cannot; he can mark enemies, which means he constantly contests them. For instance, he can fly up to a Hela on the top right High Ground and take the fight to her! He can also shut down a lone Hawkeye or pin a diver in your backline, protecting your supports. If we were to use Overwatch terminology, he would be considered an off-tank: someone who is good at denying enemy plays while also having the ability to create plays himself. But if you’re trying to solo tank as Thor, it will be quite difficult unless you are significantly better than your opponent.
Synergy with Frontline Tanks
Thor synergizes best with a frontline tank, such as Strange or Groot! With the new buffs to Captain America—though we’ll discuss that later—he still performs well in low ELO because he plays like a high-damage DPS character. In a low ELO lobby, even if you’re solo tanking, it’s somewhat manageable! This is because supports often deal minimal damage and tend to pocket you heavily. As a bulky DPS, you can eliminate many threats! However, this approach is not optimal for the long term and will eventually fail when you become too heavily targeted.
Thor’s Main Role
As players progress into higher ELOs, many ask what Thor’s main role is. Essentially, it is to deny or create opportunities! Denying enemy plays is critical; if enemies are set up or attempting to play off-angle, you need to be on them non-stop! No one can play out of position or alone without a beefy character like Thor on their tail. Your job is to give enemies no space to make errors or mistakes! You are contesting enemies without risking your life.
Creating Opportunities
When you engage with an enemy, like Hawkeye positioned at an angle, your DPS characters may risk their lives to contest him. However, you have a much easier time staying alive and can disengage if necessary. This ability allows you to poke and prod enemy teams until you find an opportunity or identify someone out of position to capitalize on. Additionally, you create plays for your team by pushing enemies off The High Ground or facilitating other characters’ engagements.
Mobility and Control
Thor excels at generating advantages for his team using mobility, crowd control, and sudden bursts of damage. He gets to play the best of both worlds: having high-impact plays like a DPS while also denying plays and controlling space on the map—something traditional DPS characters struggle with without risking their lives.
Exploiting Height Advantage
One of Thor’s key strategies is abusing height. Maps like Future Tokyo are ideal for him because he can utilize rooftops effectively. Typically, Thor employs a hit-and-run style where he drops down to deal damage and then retreats back to The High Ground before enemies can close in. By contesting The High Ground while simultaneously engaging enemies, Thor can make impactful plays that other characters cannot.
Awareness and Adaptation
However, as you continue this strategy, enemies will begin to look for you. Especially when committing to an Awakening Rune, enemies can punish you if you cannot escape. Therefore, while it’s effective to play aggressively, you must remain cautious as opponents will adapt over time.
Synergies with Other Characters
Lastly, we must discuss synergy—there are many powerful synergies with Thor that players should exploit. For example, even though Hela received significant nerfs, she remains a strong DPS character. The combination of Thor and Hela is incredibly potent; if Hela kills an enemy and then resurrects Thor at nearly full HP, it creates one of the most broken synergies in the game.
