Cloak and Dagger Overview
Cloak and Dagger are strategists that provide incredibly consistent healing and can cancel out any enemy ultimate with the click of one button. Their kits are quite simple: Dagger focuses on healing and assisting teammates, while Cloak deals damage and offers some impressive utility. Let’s begin by examining their kits.
Dagger’s Abilities
Dagger has a homing missile for her primary fire that damages enemies and heals allies. Her right-click shoots out an AOE healing area that heals over time. Her E ability creates a wall of light that heals and enhances healing for allies. Pressing shift swaps characters to Cloak.
Cloak’s Abilities
Cloak’s left-click is an infinite ammo, auto-aim drain ability that damages enemies. His right-click shrouds allies, making them untargetable and invulnerable to damage. His E ability launches a wall that increases damage and blinds enemies. Regardless of whether you’re playing as Cloak or Dagger, your ultimate is a three-hit combo that leaves an area on the ground, healing allies and damaging enemies.

Efficient Use of Abilities
Now, let’s go over each ability in detail and teach you how to use them efficiently, starting with Dagger.
Dagger’s Healing Abilities
Dagger’s primary fire is a homing missile with a bit of area of effect (AOE), so throwing it onto isolated teammates to heal them is effective. However, throwing it into clumped-up allies is even better since you’ll be healing multiple allies at once. Her primary fire can be used offensively as well, but the damage is not impressive. Therefore, the majority of the time, you’ll be using your left click to heal allies. However, you can use it to pick off and finish low HP enemies.
Bouncing Heals
Dagger’s left click not only locks onto allies to heal but can also bounce off walls, allowing you to provide healing support even if your ally breaks line of sight behind a wall. Even when bouncing off walls, the shots will still attempt to lock onto allies to heal; however, once a shot bounces off a wall, it will not lock onto enemies. Dagger’s right click creates an AOE field that heals allies. This is a great tool to use when your team is stacked together. This healing bubble lasts for 6 seconds and also heals you, making it an excellent way to stay alive when under attack. Just make sure not to leave the light bubble, and you’ll be able to survive most duelist combos and dives. This is also the only way to heal yourself outside of your ultimate, so using this ability more selfishly—saving it for yourself and your other support—is the best strategy for utilizing Dagger’s healing bubble.
Optimal Healing Strategy
You should primarily rely on your left click to heal your teammates. The right click should only be used in desperate situations when you need to keep them alive or when there are no other options available, such as when your left click is reloading.
Understanding Dagger’s E Ability
Dagger’s E is a wall of light, often referred to as a window by many players. This ability not only heals allies but also enhances all healing they receive. Similar to Jeff’s bubble, it is advisable to rely mostly on your primary fire to keep your allies’ health topped off; reserve this ability for emergencies when health bars are critically low. The ability has a short range and a long cooldown, so it is essential to use it wisely. It passes through all allies, making it particularly effective for clustered teammates. Aim to find the right angle so that the window affects two or more allies to maximize its benefits.
Clo’s Abilities Overview
Now shifting focus to Clo’s abilities: his left click serves as an infinite ammo, auto-aim drain spell. This will be your primary form of self-defense when you’re being targeted and teammates are either absent or not providing adequate protection. However, avoid overusing this ability throughout the match; remember, your primary role is to heal. Switching to Cloak and using your left click is an effective strategy for eliminating low-health targets and agile enemies, as the tracking on this ability is exceptional—essentially functioning as auto-aim.
Clo’s Right Click Utility
Clo’s right click is among the most potent utility abilities in the game; it shrouds Cloak, allowing him to briefly fly by holding the space bar. This ability protects Cloak and any allies within a large circle, rendering them untargetable and invulnerable. It is particularly useful for repositioning when you are being targeted; more importantly, with precise timing, you can utilize it to keep your entire team alive during enemy ultimates.
Understanding Cloak’s Right Click Ability
One important aspect to note about Cloak’s right-click ability is that it will cease shrouding and protecting your allies if they fire or reload. Therefore, it may be beneficial to explain to your team that all they need to do is stand still and refrain from action while you shroud them. Successfully executing a well-timed shroud can significantly influence the outcome of a team fight.
Clo’s E Ability: Offensive Strategies
Clo’s E ability serves as an offensive window. When this ability lands on enemies, it not only inflicts damage but also increases the damage they receive from all sources. Most importantly, it blinds the enemy. While technically classified as a blind, it functions more like nearsightedness; any enemy affected by this window can still see within a limited range. This ability is particularly effective when firing through multiple stacked enemies to maximize its impact. However, you can also target individual heroes that rely heavily on their aim, as enemy heroes like Hela and Hawkeye become nearly ineffective when blinded.
Character Swapping Mechanics
Pressing shift while playing as Dagger or Cloak allows you to swap to the other character. Although there is a brief animation during this transition, there is no cooldown, enabling you to switch freely between characters. Additionally, using the mouse scroll wheel to swap characters can be more convenient for many players. When controlling Cloak, you can view Dagger’s cooldowns for her E and right-click abilities, and vice versa. This feature allows you to track the cooldowns of both characters simultaneously. The key to mastering this character lies in balancing your playstyle between the two; your primary objective is to maintain your team’s health as Dagger while switching to Cloak to inflict damage, apply blinds, and execute crucial team-saving shrouds.
Effective Use of Cloak and Dagger
You should be spending 90% of your games as Dagger, swapping to Cloak mostly just to use your blind, put it on cooldown, and of course, responsibly using that shroud to save yourself or your team.
Ultimate Ability Mechanics
Cloak and Dagger’s ultimate is the same ability no matter which character you’re playing as: you dash three times in the direction of your camera, leaving a carpet on the ground that damages enemies and heals your allies. This ultimate is extremely powerful at contesting key areas of the map like choke points or the cart. However, there is some secret tech to it because every dash lays a separate layer of the carpet.
Stacking Healing Carpets
You can actually dash back and forth in the same area and stack these carpets up, with each one healing 220 HP per second. This means if you dash back and forth, you will create a small strip of land that heals every ally in it for 660 HP per second—essentially turning you invincible for a long time.
Strategic Team Play
The damage it deals to enemies isn’t incredible, but the healing definitely is. Stacking up two or three carpets and dropping your right click on an area will provide you and your team with absurd amounts of healing. For instance, consider the Punisher ultimate: it’s one of the scariest DPS ults out there, yet it struggles to KO a Dagger that is simply standing on stacked carpets. Once again, it’s advisable to communicate with your team to stand in the stacked carpet instead of trying to chase your teammates down to heal them with your ultimate.
Ultimate Abilities and Strategies
The ultimate ability is a great all-around tool to be used defensively once fighting breaks out and as a counter to enemies using their ultimates. For instance, if an enemy Hela activates her ultimate against you, you can stack your carpet three times and then have your team stand in the carpet while switching to Cloak and dealing damage, all while your ultimate heals your team. Another advanced tip is that Cloak and Dagger’s ultimate acts as a soft cleanse for yourself; for example, if you’re rooted by Groot‘s ultimate or Squirrel Girl‘s root, you can still use your ultimate.

Strengths of Cloak and Dagger
Now that we’ve explained their abilities, let’s discuss some strengths of playing Cloak and Dagger. Their biggest strength lies in their consistent healing: with Dagger’s right-click, left-click, E ability, and ultimate, you have a total of four ways to heal allies. Positioning at the back of your team should provide you with a clear view of any ally health bars that need to be topped off; Dagger’s left-click homing and area-of-effect properties ensure that you can easily heal both clumped-up allies and single-target allies such as Flyers. Some strategists like Loki or Jeff may struggle with landing heals on Flyers, but that’s not an issue for Cloak and Dagger.
Survivability and Mobility
Dagger’s right-click and Cloak’s shroud also provide you with two ways to survive and escape death—which is significantly more than other strategists possess. While you may be mostly immobile when using at least one of these abilities, you become incredibly difficult to eliminate as Cloak and Dagger. You essentially have twice as many abilities in the game as most characters; mastering this hero involves learning to cycle through all of them for a balance of offense and defense.
Understanding Cloak and Dagger’s Healing and Abilities
But just remember: your healing output drops to zero if you get picked; so always try to save at least one survival tool for yourself. Cloak’s right-click is the best reactive ability in the game; learning to quickly swap to Cloak and shroud your team is an extremely important skill when mastering this hero. Hearing an enemy ultimate voice line means you need to swap to Cloak and shroud now! Getting this timing down is the difference between decent and great Cloak and Dagger players.
Challenges of Playing Cloak and Dagger
Now let’s talk about some of the weaker areas of playing Cloak and Dagger. Having two sets of abilities is nice, but all of Cloak and Dagger’s abilities come with very long cooldowns—which means playing this hero requires a lot of spell discipline and game knowledge. You need to save every ability for the correct moment to use them because you won’t be able to use that ability again for a long time. Playing this character can be very punishing if you end up wasting even one spell—leaving you vulnerable—so knowing when and how to use every ability to its maximum efficiency makes playing this hero much harder than most strategists.
Damage Limitations of Cloak and Dagger
Another weakness is Cloak and Dagger’s lack of damage: Dagger’s primary fire basically deals no damage; it’s mostly for finishing off very low HP targets. Swapping to Cloak to deal damage removes your ability to heal your team; he’s just a very short-range character—it’s just enough damage to protect yourself in a pinch—but you won’t be hundred-zeroing anyone like Mantis can.
The Utility of Cloak and Dagger
While Cloak brings a lot of utility, it lacks hard crowd control; there are no stuns, roots, freezes, or sleeps to set up KOs for your team. This makes Cloak and Dagger’s effectiveness less visible and straightforward compared to most strategists.
Unique Value and Strategy
The value this character provides is more challenging to notice than abilities like Luna‘s ultimate, freezing, or Mantis’s sleep. Overall, Cloak and Dagger are exceptional strategists with some of the most unique utility in the game. Swapping between characters and finding the perfect balance between keeping your team alive and delivering offensive utility can be difficult. However, once you’ve mastered the art of the swap, the possibilities with this character are endless.
Tips for Maximizing Effectiveness
Be sure to hold Dagger’s right-click to save yourself and survive dives. Listen for enemy ultimates to shroud your team effectively, and stack your ultimate up to three times to withstand almost anything! By following these tips, you’ll bring significant value to your team and start carrying your games in no time.
