It’s better to play something you’re confident with. While meta heroes statistically may bring success, Dota is a dynamic game, and personal comfort with a hero can outweigh purely statistical advantages.

Understanding Strengths and Playstyles

You can play almost any hero successfully, as long as you understand why the hero is strong and how to support your team. It’s about adapting your playstyle and item build to complement your teammates and counter your opponents. Recognizing your hero’s strengths in different phases of the game is essential.

Dealing with Troll in the First Wave

A good example is playing Alchemist against Troll Warlord. In this matchup, I use Acid Spray in the first wave, as Troll has low armor and struggles against its damage. By casting Acid Spray without pulling creep aggro, I ensure that the wave dies quickly, which secures me easy last hits and puts Troll at a disadvantage.

Item Choices and Laning Adjustments

In this game, I started with a Wand, expecting a Nyx-Troll lane. However, the lane ended up being Bounty-Troll. The Wand wasn’t as useful here, but it was still decent due to Troll’s frequent spell use. In hindsight, a Bracer would have been a better choice, providing extra tankiness and value in trades.

Wave Management Strategy

Wave management is key to controlling the lane. If you let the wave go under your tower, you can easily reset the creep equilibrium by pulling aggro back. In my game, I allowed the wave to push under my tower to secure safe last hits, while ensuring Troll missed some of his own. Despite taking some damage, I regen it back with a couple of Tangoes, and this keeps the lane in my favor.

Laning with a Weak Early Game Partner

In this game, I was laning with Ring Master, a hero with a weak early laning phase. To compensate, my goal was to keep the wave close to my tower and avoid over-extending. I avoided casting Acid Spray unnecessarily to prevent pushing the wave, which would have exposed us to unnecessary pressure.

Having a clear plan and adapting to each game makes a huge difference. When I play inspired, I perform better because I understand every small detail in the lane, such as timing pulls, managing creep aggro, and positioning properly.

When the Bounty Hunter pulled the creep wave, I had to adapt and contest it to prevent losing control of the lane. While not ideal, sometimes contesting a pull is necessary to keep your farm up and ensure the enemy doesn’t gain an easy advantage.

Knowing that Ring Master wasn’t great at contesting pulls, I took the initiative to maintain control. When the enemy duo played aggressively, I used Concoction to keep them at bay and prevent my teammate from dying. Sometimes, sacrificing perfect lane positioning to save a teammate is necessary for overall lane success.

While I prefer perfect wave control, there are moments when you need to adjust to save your lane partner. In this case, I missed a few last hits, but by minute four, I was still in a strong position with 20 CS. After baiting the Troll into a bad trade, we managed to secure a kill.

Through proper lane management, I had a significant net worth lead, almost 1,000 gold ahead of Troll. By focusing on last hits and controlling the wave, I ensured that Troll couldn’t keep up, which allowed me to hit my item timings faster.

Choosing Boots and Wave Management Strategy

In this lane, I rushed Boots early due to the pressure from Troll and Bounty. The increased mobility allowed me to dodge potential ganks and secure my farm. When Sniper rotated to my lane, I stayed focused on my last hits, accepting a minor death in exchange for maintaining control of the lane.

Dealing with a Bad Wave Position

After a couple of ranged creeps pushed into my tower, the wave was in a tough spot. My goal was to reset it without dying, keeping an eye on Bounty Hunter’s positioning and reacting accordingly. Knowing that Troll would become more dangerous with Phase Boots, I prioritized safety and mobility.

Using Acid Spray and Timing My Escapes

Instead of contesting every creep, I played safely, using Acid Spray when needed and retreating with Phase Boots when threatened. This approach allowed me to stay alive and avoid giving away unnecessary kills, while still keeping up in farm.

With Phase Boots and Wind Lace, I focused on mobility, which enabled me to cut waves and stay safe from Troll’s aggression. By constantly watching the map and noting the positions of Sniper and Bounty, I made efficient plays like stacking camps and maintaining vision control without taking unnecessary risks.

Managing Threats and Efficient Farming

At this point, with Chemical Rage activated, I felt safe enough to farm multiple camps. I even grabbed neutral items like Royal Jelly, which helped solve my mana issues. With proper item choices and map awareness, I secured my farm and stayed ahead.

Securing CS and Handling Enemy Presence

With 60 CS by this point and good stacking from my teammate, I kept pushing waves efficiently. Although the enemy had some presence on the map, I identified opportunities to farm aggressively and punish their mistakes, especially when I knew their key heroes were out of position.

Choosing the Build for Area Control

My build in this game focused on area control, opting for a fast Radiance. I typically build Armlet into Blink for early tempo, but in this game, I defaulted to Radiance, which worked well for farming and survivability, especially in team fights.

Though Armlet would have been better for fighting, Radiance was more efficient for farming in this game. I noticed a good stack opportunity, and by using Acid Spray efficiently, I hit my Radiance timing quickly, giving me a significant power spike.

To maximize my farm efficiency, I focused on optimal Acid Spray placement, ensuring it hit as many creeps as possible. Although I made a few mistakes, these small adjustments contributed to hitting my early Radiance and securing farm quickly.

Handling Bounty Hunter’s Teleport

When Bounty Hunter teleported in, I was prepared. Although he had vision, I didn’t feel threatened since I had Chemical Rage and plenty of regen. My focus remained on stacking and farming efficiently, even when the enemy midlaner rotated.

Achieving an Early Radiance

With smart plays and map awareness, I secured an 11-minute Radiance with additional items like Soul Ring and Phase Boots. While you can rush Radiance faster, I prefer building durability to ensure I don’t die during the early game.

Slow Reaction to Teleport

Admittedly, I was slow to react to a teleport in this game. I’ve been playing without audio recently, which impacted my reaction time. That said, with a 12-minute Radiance and level 10, the fight was easily winnable, and I continued farming after cleaning up the fight.

Taking the Right Fights with Radiance

After securing Radiance, I didn’t feel pressured to immediately force plays. Instead, I continued farming and waited for better opportunities to engage. This patient playstyle helped me avoid unnecessary deaths and capitalize on the enemy’s mistakes.

Patient Play and Map Awareness

Watching the map closely, I noticed the enemy’s positioning and avoided risky plays. With Troll farming top and Bounty mid, I knew I could farm safely without being contested. By capitalizing on their poor rotations, I continued to snowball.

Decision-Making in Pro Games vs. Pubs

In pro games, I might have called for a smoke at this timing, but in pubs, I often prefer to continue farming. When the enemy contested a rune, I joined the fight, cleaned up, and returned to farming, maintaining my net worth lead.

Choosing Between Armlet and Sange

In hindsight, I wish I had built Sange instead of Armlet. Sange would have helped me survive burst damage from Nyx and Sniper, offering more tankiness and sustain in fights. Armlet provided a good HP burst, but the lack of sustained durability made it a suboptimal choice.

Taking Roshan and Building Shard Early

At around the 16-minute mark, we secured Roshan, and I already had 14k net worth. One of my favorite plays on Alchemist is buying the Shard early. Its buffed duration and synergy with Alchemist’s ultimate make it incredibly strong for farming and fighting.

The Power of the Shard

Alchemist’s Shard provides 50 attack speed, 40 HP regen, and 30 movement speed for 15 seconds, making it a powerful tool. It synergizes well with items like Yasha, which increases percentage-based movement speed, further boosting your mobility and impact in fights.

Choosing Neutral Items

For neutral items, I took Pupil’s Gift, which provided extra armor, attack speed, and mana pool. Though Grove Bow might have been better for attack speed, the items I had were decent for my stage of the game, and Pupil’s Gift worked well for my build.

Playing Safely Despite the Lead

Even with a significant lead, I avoided overcommitting. Instead of forcing tower pushes or risky plays, I maintained control of the game by farming efficiently and waiting for the right moments to engage.

Farming Towards the Untouchable Timing

I focused on farming towards the Shard and Sange and Yasha timing, knowing that this combination would make me nearly unkillable. Once I hit this timing, my HP, armor, and regen were so high that I could comfortably survive any engagement.

Comfortable Defensive Play

While my team played aggressively, I was content to farm and play defensively. I knew my timings were stronger, and there was no rush to force engagements. When the right moment arrived, I could join the fight and dominate with my superior farm.

When I finally engaged, my armor and regen made me incredibly tanky. With 32 armor and over 100 HP regen in fights, Troll and Nyx couldn’t bring me down, even when they used their ultimates. My build was focused on surviving and sustaining through fights.

Thanks to my armor and regen, I easily tanked both Nyx’s burst and Troll’s ultimate. While the game may have seemed one-sided, it was my focus on the small details—like item choices and wave management—that made the difference in my performance.

My lane opponent, Troll, didn’t manage his resources or lane control well, which allowed me to out-farm him and hit my early item timings. His inability to contest last hits or denies left him far behind, giving me a clear advantage.

By watching the map and adjusting my build based on enemy heroes, I stayed efficient and ahead of the enemy. This focus on mobility, positioning, and itemization allowed me to dominate the game as a safe-lane Alchemist.
