Team Fighting Rules for Carries
At the end of this guide, I’ll reveal a special rule addressing the common dilemma of when to prioritize farming or engaging in fights.
Rule number one emphasizes the importance of never exposing yourself on the front line without sufficient information. Before engaging in team fights, it’s vital to assess the presence of threatening heroes who possess disabling abilities or powerful crowd control spells. Heroes like Lion, Axe, or those with game-changing ultimates such as Chronosphere or Black Hole should dictate your positioning strategy. Utilize your teammates as a buffer to gather intel and maintain excellent map awareness to anticipate enemy movements. Remember, exercising patience and strategic positioning can significantly tilt team fights in your favor.

Securing Aegis for Success
Rule number two advocates for securing the Aegis of the Immortal before committing to fights or aggressive pushes. The Aegis serves as a game-changing advantage, safeguarding your team from potential setbacks during crucial engagements. Coordinate with your teammates to secure Roshan after gaining map control or securing key pickoffs. The first Roshan attempt typically occurs between the 20 to 30-minute mark, setting the stage for subsequent high ground sieges and pivotal team fights. A well-timed Aegis activation can swing fights in your favor, ensuring successful team engagements and objective acquisitions.
Rule number three stresses the proactive use of the Black King Bar (BKB) during fights. The BKB’s activation can often determine the outcome of skirmishes, offering crucial immunity from disabling effects. Avoid the common pitfall of saving BKB for extended durations in fights, risking vulnerability to chain stuns and burst damage. Deploy your BKB preemptively to preempt potential threats and initiate fights on your terms. Remember, utilizing BKB early can prevent untimely deaths and secure favorable outcomes in team engagements, even in conjunction with the Aegis.
Rule number four introduces the concepts of hard commit and soft commit strategies during team fights. Mastering these approaches is pivotal for maximizing your impact while ensuring survivability in intense engagements. Hard committing entails fully engaging in fights with confidence in your ability to escape, particularly when under the effects of magic immunity like BKB or lifesteal abilities. Prioritize sustained damage output and spellcasting to influence team fights positively. However, exercise caution against heroes possessing abilities that pierce through magic immunity, such as Doom or Legion Commander’s Duel.

Team Fight Tactics
Once you hard commit into fights with BKB, you’ll be given a few seconds to dish out as much damage as possible. After that, you’ll need to keep an eye out on the BKB icon and disengage if the fight is not heavily won yet when it reaches 3/4 of duration. Overstaying past BKB’s duration is often what gets many carries killed in fights, as they get chain stunned and bursted to death after it ends.
This is where you’ll move into the soft commit part. Soft commit refers to getting in and out of fights repeatedly while staying alive. I like to see it as floating outside of fights, almost like a dance. You need to constantly find openings that are given to you to engage, disengage, and re-engage again without dying. This is normally done with spells and item combinations like Blink Daggers to hop in and out of fights. Every hero has different ways to hard commit and soft commit. So, mastering this concept will put you miles ahead of your bracket if you can learn to survive most of your fights while contributing in team fights.
Rule number five, target squishy heroes or backline supports. Choosing the right heroes to go on in fights is very crucial in determining how your fights will turn out. The majority of the time, you should be looking to target enemy supports as they often have disables, heals, or saves that will keep their cores alive. Taking them out early on in fights reduces the enemy team’s ability to sustain their core, in turn helping you win the fights. Squishy heroes can also be your target as they’re easy to burst down, for example, agility cores with low health pools. How you decide to spend the first few seconds in team fights is often the deciding factor of how fights will turn out.
In fights, you’re only provided a few seconds, normally less than 5 seconds, to hard commit into fights with your survivability factors, then having to disengage after that. Because of this, you must ensure that within those 5 seconds or so, you should have managed to eliminate one or two enemy heroes in the fight. There‘s no point attempting to engage your tanky core that’s front lining on the enemy side and wasting your Black King Bar on them, which will leave you completely vulnerable afterward.
Sometimes, the enemy supports will also have bought survivability items like Glimmer Cape to keep them alive from being bursted down by you. To solve this problem, selecting the right items to buy according to the game situation is very important, which brings us to the next team fighting rule.
Rule number six, itemize to solve problems. The topic of itemization is pretty complex because every game is different and requires different item choices to solve different problems. For example, if the enemy lineup has many disables like stuns and hexes, then Black King Bar is an absolute necessity.
If the enemy supports have defensive items like Yul Scepter, Ghost Scepter, and Glimmer Cape, then you’ll need Nullifier to overcome these issues. However, most carries’ core items will often be the same and will only start deferring when you go into the mid to late game phase. To give you a simpler idea of how item builds are generally decided, follow this itemization formula. Your first item should normally be a farming item. For example, Battle Fury, Maelstrom, and Mask of Madness. Your second item should be a survivability item. This is the item that enables your hero to come online and start playing nearer around your team. For example, Black King Bar, Manta Style, Hurricane Pike, and Sange and Yasha.
Optimizing Hero Performance in Team Fights
If your hero requires mobility items like Blink Dagger to fully utilize the hero’s fighting style, then buying the Blink Dagger here is absolutely necessary to close the gap with enemy supports. Then build hybrid items which are a combination of both damage and survivability factors. For example, Eye of Skadi and Satanic are both great items to get as third or fourth items to make you very tanky in fights. A general rule of thumb is to try to have at least 2,000 health by 30 minutes before deciding to build pure damage items like Daedalus.

Lastly, a special rule: group together when teammates are pushing. Whenever your teammates are pushing forwards and outwards, make sure to farm towards them and be near them. This is mostly applicable when you have hit your item timings in the 20 to 25-minute area, or better yet, earlier if you farm faster. The most common mistake I see carry players make is that they have a tendency to always want to split push and farm jungle camps away from their teammates. Most of the time when their teammates eventually take a fight, they will lose the fight because the carry player was slow to react to the fight. They couldn’t join the fights in time due to farming alone, a term known as AFK farming that many players do without even realizing themselves.
