Greetings, champions! I am Librarian Husky, your loyal guide through the realms of knowledge and adventure. Whether youโre diving into the depths of strategy or unearthing hidden lore, I am here to assist you in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of World of Warcraft. From the excitement of new Hero Talents to the intricate balance of PVP, there is much to explore and master in The War Within. Together, letโs uncover the secrets of this world and sharpen your skills as we prepare for the challenges ahead!
Conquest Weapon and Crafting System Improvements
You can get a Conquest Weapon by week three of the season, and by the looks of it, the crafting system in Dragonflight will be similar but even better. With the ability to scale pieces to maximum item level using a PVP-specific crafting reagent purchasable with Honor or Conquest, gearing should be faster as the season progresses.
New and Returning Embellishments
Right now, it seems like Sparks arenโt even required for crafting PVP gear. This means you wonโt be gated by a bi-weekly quest. There are also a handful of new and returning embellishments, which will be covered in future gearing updates. Be sure to bookmark our articles page for BIS lists once the expansion launches.
Returning Tier and Gem Sockets
Tier sets are also making a return, and based on an interview a few months ago, there seems to be no intention of changing how they work in PVP. With the Great Vault gone, you will now be able to purchase gem sockets with Honor, which can be used for Prismatic gems with effects like Precognition and Conflict and Strife from BFA.
Warband System and Account-wide Honor
Honor will now be transferable between all characters on your account using the new Warband system, making it easier to gear up your alts early in the season. Gearing isnโt the only thing seeing improvements; gameplay is leveling up as well, with new Hero Talents that allow for merging two specs into one.

Disc-Shadow Hybrid Design and Hero Talents
The design and aesthetic of a Disc-Shadow hybrid are enhanced by new hero talent trees that give specs entirely new abilities built from scratch. While there might be concerns that Hero Talents could break the game, it’s likely that many will have PVP modifiers to reduce their effects in Arena, keeping things balanced.
Benefits of Hero Talents
Hero Talents are not only visually impressive but also enhance gameplay, making World of Warcraft feel more modern and polished. Though some players may prefer older versions of the game, PVP requires a constant influx of new players, and the flashy, fast-paced combat systems of todayโs games appeal more to newer audiences.
Challenges with New Systems
However, with the introduction of Hero Talents, thereโs now another layer of game knowledge for PVP players to master. Thatโs why every expansion we update our “Knowing Your Enemy” course. The expansion also brings system updates like a new Battleground, a rated BG Blitz mode, and an innovative lever system in Arena starting rooms.
Improvements to PVP Gameplay
With all these system improvements, can we expect gameplay to get better too? A few months ago, we explained what went wrong with PVP in the past, and these changes aim to address many of those issues. Blizzard’s new ideas seem to be moving the game in a positive direction.
Addressing Mobility Creep, Micro CC, and AOE Damage
Over the past few years, weโve identified three major issues in PVP: Mobility Creep, Micro CC, and AOE Damage. Thankfully, The War Within seems to be addressing at least two of these problems. For example, Death Knights will now be able to mount in combat, similar to a Paladinโs Divine Steed, but some melee specs are losing talents that extended their attack range.
Changes in Melee Combat and Mobility
Melee specs like Rogues and Hunters are losing talents like Acrobatic Strikes and Lunge, making them less capable of hitting targets from long distances. However, not all changes favor reduced mobility; for instance, Rogues can now have four charges of Shadowstep, continuing the trend of Mobility Creep for certain specs.
Micro CC Adjustments
There have been small improvements to Micro CC. For example, Strangulate now completely overrides Asphyxiate when selected as a PVP talent. Mages also face changes, as Ring of Frost now shares a talent slot with Ice Nova. Minor forms of Micro CC have been removed from the game altogether, but these are just small steps in the right direction.
AOE Damage and Health Pools
AOE Damage remains an issue across the board, and itโs something that still needs to be addressed. Another significant problem is health pools. During Dragonflight, players in Mythic Plus content frequently faced one-shots from mechanics dealing absurd amounts of damage. This issue continues to be a concern as we move forward.
Impact of Dragonflight Talent Trees and HP Buffs
The new Dragonflight talent trees added many defensive abilities, making classes bulkier if they use them correctly. This created a problem that Blizzard addressed by massively buffing HP Pools in The War Within while nerfing DPS talents that provided leech. In PVE, this meant the game was no longer a one-shot avoidance simulator, and healers now have a more defined role, allowing them to plant their feet and spam heals.
HP Pools and Their Effect on PVP
In PVP, larger HP Pools on paper make the game less spiky but also result in longer, more drawn-out matches. Healers relying on direct healing output might struggle early on, as games are going deeper into dampening. While PVE allows healers to stand still and channel heals, Arena matches involve managing kicks, CC, and healing reduction, making damage spikes twice as hard to handle.
Healer Damage and Offensive Play
With weaker healing, damage becomes more valuable, making healer damage and calculated offensive plays more impactful. One of the biggest complaints from healers during Dragonflight was their limited ability to impact solo shuffle games. Most of the time, they were just pumping HPS, hoping their DPS could win. However, as Dragonflight progressed, balance shifted, and healers gained enough damage to contribute meaningfully.
Healer Damage Buffs in Late Dragonflight
Even Resto Druids, considered one of the most passive healers in the game, received significant damage buffs toward the end of Dragonflight. This allowed them to deal burst damage, contributing more actively to the scoreboard, which improved the overall experience for healers in competitive play.
The Influence of Healers in The War Within
Even though healing might feel a bit weaker in The War Within, healers could have more influence over the actual gameplay. Weโve discussed the positive aspects of the expansion, but where does that leave the bad and the ugly? While there are improvements, such as better gearing, new Hero Talents, and fixes to mobility and Micro CC, some issues remain.
The Repetitive Nature of Gameplay
The pessimistic view is that despite these improvements, The War Within feels like Dragonflight 2.0. Even with new power-ups, the structure of most games is unchanged. Matches still follow the same script, with an initial burst of action followed by a two-minute waiting period for cooldowns to reset. If you’ve played Dragonflightโs solo shuffle, this will feel familiar.
Tempering Expectations
This isnโt necessarily a bad thing for everyone, but those expecting the game to feel radically different might be disappointed. Gone are the days when every expansion felt unique, like the jumps from Cataclysm to Mists of Pandaria or from Mists of Pandaria to Warlords of Draenor. The War Within doesnโt offer that drastic shift in gameplay style.
Concerns for the Future of PVP
The real concern lies in where the game is headed. Thereโs been a lot of recent discussion about core issues in PVP, and itโs become a hot topic. Blizzard seems to be pushing class design towards Mythic Plus, with every spec packed with cleave and AOE abilities, which may not bode well for the future of PVP.

PVP and PVE Convergence in The War Within
With Dragonflightโs nerfs to CC durations, a 90-second healer trinket, and the chaos of solo shuffle, itโs clear that PVP has become more like PVE than at any other point in WoWโs history. Should we expect The War Within to solve these issues immediately? The answer is no. In fact, the next few expansions might further emphasize these design trends for an unexpected reason: catering to casual players.
Casual Players and Solo Content
The War Within introduces new systems designed specifically for casual solo players, including delvesโopen-world scenarios where you explore caves for treasureโand even Solo Raids. Yes, you read that right: Solo Raids. Gone are the days when you needed to click the LFG tab to automatically join a group. Now, you can do it all on your own.
Impact on Class Design and PVP
What does this mean for class design and PVP? For one, itโs clear that the PVP player base is smaller than the Mythic Plus community, which already competes for class design. Now, PVP must also compete with class design aimed at the casual solo player. This shift could be one reason more classes are getting pets, making gameplay feel more immersive and alive.
The Rise of Pet Classes
Itโs no longer just Beast Mastery Hunters and Demonology Warlocks controlling hordes of pets. Now, even Death Knights have apocalyptic horsemen auto-casting AMS during a standard rotation. Destruction Warlocks can summon a demonic army capable of stressing your GPU. In this world where players can do everything solo, the game must feel more immersive and engaging, even when playing alone.
The Impact of NPCs and AOE Damage
If being surrounded by NPCs helps reduce the feeling of isolation, look no further than the new Warband login screen. These are simply your characters sitting together to avoid loneliness. However, the AOE Damage problem remains persistent. Toolkits are still designed to handle massive pulls, which affects both class balance and PVP Gameplay.
Challenges in Class Design and Micro CC
At the end of Dragonflight, only a few compositions required precise, coordinated CC to win games. Most comps just picked a target, blasted it with damage, and used Micro CC to overwhelm the healer. While there are exceptions, like the infamous “Draco Cleave” with Frost DKs, 95% of comps play the same way today.
Class Balance and Progress
Despite these challenges, The War Within is taking steps in the right direction. Dragonflight ended with most specs being competitively viable, with the majority moving toward A-tier. While there were outliers in every patch, class balance was solid, and itโs expected to improve further now that massive talent tree reworks are complete.
Optimism for PVP in The War Within
So, will PVP in The War Within be good? The answer is yes, and players should be excited for the expansion. Even if it feels familiar to Dragonflight, the game is becoming more alt-friendly and offers a combat system exciting enough to attract new playersโa positive step for the game’s future.
