Hello and welcome to my beginner’s guide for Classic WoW. This guide is aimed at absolute newbies, modern players of the game, and veteran players who may not have played in a long time. For those interested in specific aspects of the game, I’ve included timestamps for each section, so you can jump directly to areas that interest you. We’ll cover the basics, so experienced players might not find much new information, but please continue reading regardless!

Why Players Choose Classic WoW Over the Modern Version

Some people wonder why players prefer Classic WoW over the modern version of the game, which includes spaceships, explosions, and 15 years of content to explore. The reason for the obsession with Classic is that it offers a much harder, slower, and more grounded experience. This challenging nature leads to greater satisfaction in the adventures you embark on.

The Social and Community Aspects of Classic WoW

One of the significant draws of Classic WoW is the greater emphasis on teamwork and forming parties with other players, which leads to a multitude of friendships and unforgettable interactions. Classic WoW embodies the true spirit of an MMO, where you can engage with others in a shared virtual world.

Classic WoW: More Than Just a Game

Classic WoW is more than just a game; it’s another world filled with people you can interact with. Its immersive environment and challenging gameplay create a unique sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and exploration, making it feel like a living world.

Choosing a Server in WoW Classic

Before beginning your journey in WoW Classic, you need to pick a server. There are three different types: PvP, PvE, and RP. PvP, or Player versus Player, limits you to creating characters from one faction on that server. For instance, if you make an Alliance character, you can only play as Alliance on that PvP server. PvE, or Player versus Environment, allows you to engage in PvP by flagging yourself, if desired. RP is a PvE server where players participate in roleplaying. For the full Classic experience, a PvP server is recommended.

Selecting a Faction

WoW has two main factions: the Horde and the Alliance. Each faction has unique characteristics—only the Alliance has the Paladin class, while only the Horde has the Shaman class. You cannot team up or raid with players from the opposite faction, making each faction feel like a unique experience. Both factions have distinct questing areas and cities, so exploring both at some point is worthwhile. However, if you’re looking for a recommendation, many suggest starting with the Alliance.

Picking a Race

Each race in WoW Classic comes with specific racial traits that offer gameplay benefits. These racials mainly matter if you’re interested in optimizing your performance. While you can find detailed guides elsewhere, it’s often best to choose a race that appeals to you aesthetically.

Choosing a Class

Now that you’ve selected your server, faction, and race, it’s time to choose your class. Each class offers a unique playstyle and abilities, so this decision will shape your WoW Classic experience.

Mage

Mages are your classic wizard-type characters. They excel at crowd control (CC) and can conjure food, water, and portals, making them invaluable in groups and raids. Their powerful area-of-effect spells make them essential in dealing with multiple enemies at once.

Priest

Priests are the ultimate healers in WoW Classic. Surprisingly efficient to level, they can also take on a Shadow spec to provide damage (DPS) if desired. Priests bring powerful buffs, increasing their allies’ survivability in challenging encounters.

Rogue

Rogues are stealthy thieves who can turn invisible, ambush enemies, craft poisons, and pick locks, making them ideal for players who enjoy a cunning playstyle. Their burst damage potential makes them formidable in both PvP and PvE.

Warlock

Warlocks are dark summoners who use damage-over-time spells (DoTs) and summon demons. They can also use fear effects to control their enemies. With the ability to drain life from foes, they’re both self-sufficient and lethal.

Warrior

Warriors are classic fighters who use rage as a resource. They excel as both tanks and DPS, making them versatile in group roles. Their high health pool and armor allow them to withstand intense combat situations.

Druid

Druids are shape-shifters who can take the forms of cats, bears, cheetahs, and even sea creatures. They can heal, DPS, and tank, though they don’t specialize in any one area. Their adaptability makes them perfect for players who enjoy varied gameplay styles.

Hunter

Hunters are ranged weapon users with a pet companion. This class is excellent for new players due to its simplicity and efficiency. If you’re unsure what role to play, Hunter is a great starting choice. Their pets serve as reliable partners, helping control enemies and deal steady damage.

Paladin

Exclusive to the Alliance, Paladins are excellent support characters. Known for their strong healing abilities, they can also fulfill DPS and tanking roles. Their defensive auras and blessings make them invaluable team assets.

Shaman

Shamans, exclusive to the Horde, are versatile support characters. With the use of totems, they provide both healing and DPS support to their allies. Their unique ability to enhance group performance with totems makes them highly valued.

Introduction to WoW Classes

This is just a brief introduction to WoW Classic classes, aimed at sparking interest in a class that may suit your playstyle. Once you choose a race and class, you’ll enter the expansive world of Warcraft. Welcome to WoW! Remember, each class offers a unique set of strengths that can enrich your journey.

Starting Out in WoW Classic

When you first load into the game, there will be helpful tips displayed at the bottom of your screen. These tips introduce the basics of gameplay. However, there are a few essential tips the game won’t explain, which can make your experience smoother. Taking the time to learn these basics will give you a strong foundation for your adventures.

Quest Navigation Tips

One of the first things you’ll notice is that quests do not automatically appear on the mini-map. You’ll need to read the quest text to determine where to go. If you’re still unsure, you can look up the quest online or use a quest helper like Questie, which provides guidance. Turning on instant quest text can also save you time by making quests easier to read.

Introduction to Combat

Once you accept your first quest, you’ll experience WoW Classic’s combat system. While combat may start slow, especially for classes like warriors, paladins, and rogues that rely on auto-attacks, it gradually becomes more engaging. Spellcasters, however, should stay at a distance and use spells from their action bar. Combat in WoW Classic is slower-paced compared to the modern game, giving each action more weight and strategic value.

Strategic Combat in WoW Classic

Every action in combat matters greatly, so use your spells wisely. Consider the types of mobs you’re pulling and plan strategies to defeat them efficiently. If you see a mob with a grey nameplate, it means another player has already attacked it; killing it will not yield rewards. You can team up with other players to share kills, though this will slightly reduce your XP per kill.

The Importance of Looting

Always loot the mobs you defeat. Gold is hard to come by in Classic WoW, so selling items found on enemies is an important way to earn passive income. Every bit helps, especially in the early stages, so make sure you take advantage of every opportunity to gather resources.

Training and Abilities

Once you reach level two, you can speak with a class trainer to learn new abilities. Some of these abilities are essential for leveling, while others may be less useful. Training new skills costs gold, so prioritize abilities that add the most value. For example, a Hunter doesn’t need Track Beast right away, but Arcane Shot can be highly beneficial.

Upgrading Skills

You can view all your learned abilities in your spellbook. Sometimes, instead of learning a new skill, you’ll receive an upgraded rank of an existing ability. In Classic WoW, higher ranks make abilities stronger, so remember to replace outdated versions on your action bar, as the game won’t do this automatically.

Keeping Your Abilities Upgraded

There’s nothing worse than leveling for hours only to realize you’re not using the highest rank of a spell. As you progress, make sure to upgrade your abilities regularly. Once you’ve completed the quests in your starting zone, you’ll likely be around level five or six, ready to move on to the next quest hub.

Exploring the Capital Cities

Eventually, your journey will lead you to a capital city where you can discover more advanced aspects of the game. Capital cities offer various activities, from the social to the practical. For example, you can ask guards for directions to useful resources like weapon trainers or profession trainers.

Learning New Weapon Skills

Classes are initially limited to certain weapon types, but you can learn to use additional weapons by speaking to a trainer. It’s a good idea to learn as many weapon types as possible, as this ensures you’ll be able to use upgrades when they become available.

Utilizing Town Hubs

In both capital cities and town hubs, you can access conveniences like rested XP and bind your hearthstone. You’ll also find vendors who sell essential items like food and water. However, food and water can be pricey, so try to buy from a Mage if possible, as they often sell these items for a cheaper price, benefiting both you and the Mage.

Class and Profession Trainers in Capital Cities

In main cities, you’ll find class trainers for learning new abilities, as well as profession trainers. Professions in WoW Classic are divided into two categories: primary and secondary. Secondary professions include Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. While Cooking and Fishing are optional, First Aid is highly recommended because it allows for quick healing, saving you time and gold. First Aid only requires cloth, which can be obtained from humanoid enemies during quests.

Primary Professions

Primary professions include crafting and gathering skills. With these, you can gather herbs, skin animals, mine, craft armor, or create potions. Although not essential, primary professions can be helpful, as they allow you to create gear or consumables while leveling. You may only have two primary professions at a time, so choose wisely based on your playstyle and goals.

Using the Auction House

Once you gather or craft resources, you can take them to the Auction House, where you can sell and buy items from other players. Selling items like crafted gear or reagents can earn you easy gold. However, avoid overspending in the Auction House. While certain gear might be a slight upgrade, it’s often better to find upgrades through quests or mob drops. Spending too much here is a common pitfall for new players, so focus on saving gold for more essential purchases.

Saving Gold for Essential Upgrades

Saving your gold is crucial in WoW Classic, especially for important upgrades like weapon training, new skills, and, most significantly, your level 40 mount. While you’ll frequently visit cities during your travels, much of your time will be spent questing in the open world.

Talent Trees at Level 10

Upon reaching level 10, you’ll unlock access to talent trees. Each class has three unique trees, and you receive one point per level to allocate within these trees. You can freely experiment by placing points as you wish, but following a basic build guide can provide direction. If you decide to reset your talents, note that it costs gold, and the cost increases with each reset.

Starting with Early Dungeons

I highly recommend diving into the first dungeons available to you, not because they offer the fastest XP, but because they’re incredibly enjoyable and offer valuable learning experiences. For Horde players, the first dungeon is Ragefire Chasm, accessible around level 14, while Alliance players can enter Deadmines around level 17. Dungeon pacing in WoW Classic differs greatly from the modern game, adding a unique challenge.

Preparation and Travel to Dungeons

In Classic, you must gather all dungeon-related quests outside the dungeon, then travel there on foot, as meeting stones do not summon party members and are simply markers. This requires more coordination and group planning before entering the dungeon.

Understanding Threat and Aggro

Threat management plays a critical role in Classic dungeons. The tank’s job is to hold aggro, ensuring that mobs focus their attacks on them. Tanks generate threat by hitting mobs and using abilities, so it’s essential for DPS and healers to give the tank a few seconds to establish aggro. Ignoring this can lead to chaos, with DPS players pulling aggro and complicating the encounter. Allowing the tank to pull each mob is vital for smooth dungeon runs.

Tips for Smooth Dungeon Runs

New players often overlook the importance of letting the tank lead, which can disrupt the fight if DPS players attack too early. Understanding these basics of threat and aggro will help you avoid common mistakes and enjoy a more successful and enjoyable dungeon experience.
