Greetings, heroes of Azeroth! I’m Librarian Husky, here to guide you as you embark on the thrilling journey of Cataclysm Classic. Blackwing Descent awaits, and only the prepared will conquer its challenges. Much has changed since the days of Wrath of the Lich King, and every bit of damage and build choice could make the difference between victory and being left on the sidelines. Make sure your class and skills are battle-ready—the competition for a raid spot will be fierce. Read on to arm yourself with the essential knowledge for Phase One of Cataclysm Classic!

Why Create a DPS Tier List Early?

Some players might question the need for a DPS tier list before we’re fully into phase one or before bosses like Cho’gall are on farm. The reasoning lies in the systems in Cataclysm, which penalize rerolling if you choose the wrong class. For instance, the shoulder enchant from The Earthen Ring isn’t account-bound, and grinding it took me over a dozen hours on a single character. Repeating that grind across multiple alts is far from ideal. Therefore, the best time to roll a new class is now, during this high-energy phase when players are eager to explore Blackrock Caverns.

Preparation and Testing on the PTR

For this first DPS tier list in Cataclysm, I came prepared. I spent extensive time on the Public Test Realm (PTR), raiding non-stop with classes like Fire Mages and Boomkins. Through a wide variety of raids, I gathered essential insights to provide the most accurate tier list possible, helping you make the right class choice and avoid the bench.

Evaluation of DPS Classes and Utility

I carefully took notes on which classes were excelling and which were lagging behind. To verify my observations, I compared PTR logs from top guilds, including factors like AoE damage and utility. Recognizing classes with high utility was a priority in my analysis, so let’s start with the B-tier rankings.

B-Tier DPS: Druids

Starting in the B tier, we have Druids. Boomkins, with their new mechanics, are enjoyable to play, making them my choice for leveling and dungeons. Unlike Wrath’s RNG, Cataclysm introduces a stable meter where each cast progresses you towards a Sun or Moon phase. However, this stability comes at a cost, placing their single-target damage in the mid-range.

Feral Druids’ Role in Raids

Feral Druids remain somewhat obscure, primarily valued for their off-tanking and utility rather than damage output. They consistently contribute to raids, yet they rarely make a mark on the damage meters. While their AoE capabilities are limited, Boomkins shine in this area.

AoE Strength of Boomkin Druids

In AoE scenarios, Boomkins have a range of tools. Starfall, wild mushroom detonations, and Hurricane provide considerable AoE potential, allowing them to contribute meaningfully. Despite these options, their overall damage still falls short of the top spots, but they hold a reliable presence in the B tier.

Limitations of Druid AoE and Utility

Druids’ AoE abilities struggle to compete with top-tier AoE classes like Elemental Shamans and Fire Mages. Regarding utility, Druids face setbacks as well; their Battle Res is now also available to Death Knights, and their interrupt has been significantly weakened. Thorns does offer tanks a useful threat-generation tool, and Stampede remains valuable for Ferals. However, Tranquility, often seen as a powerful spell, rarely saves a group if things are already dire. In summary, Boomkins may not stand out but provide reliable damage and utility, while Ferals excel in utility, particularly with their off-tanking capability, keeping Druids squarely in the B tier.

Performance of Retribution Paladins

Next, let’s discuss Retribution Paladins. They now have a more engaging rotation that should yield high damage output without the need for a Shadow Priest’s support. However, in my PTR testing, Retribution Paladins rarely ranked highly on the meters. This might be due to undergeared players, but as an additional complication, the Retribution Paladin DPS simulator isn’t functioning currently, leaving some ambiguity regarding their potential at launch.

Retribution Paladins: Mid-Tier DPS and Utility

Based on my experience, Retribution Paladins (Rets) generally fall in the middle of the pack in terms of DPS. In AoE situations, Rets bring strong tools like Divine Storm, Consecration, and the Seals of Command talent. However, in multi-target fights, their effectiveness diminishes compared to classes like Shadow Priests. Where Rets truly excel is utility; they offer valuable abilities like the Rebuke interrupt, a 3% damage buff, and critical blessings like Kings and Might. Overall, Retribution Paladins hold a reliable spot in most 25-man raids and many 10-man groups, fitting into the upper B tier.

Shadow Priests in the A Tier

Starting off the A tier, we have Shadow Priests. While you might expect them to top the damage meters in Blackwing Descent, they usually rank around 6th to 8th in DPS. Shadow Priests have gained new abilities like Archangel and the Shadow Orb mechanic, adding RNG elements that can boost their DPS. They particularly excel in multi-dotting, shining in fights with two to three targets. However, in larger pulls, their Mind Sear ability falls behind other classes like Fire Mages.

Shadow Priest Utility

Shadow Priests also bring considerable utility, which can be crucial in a raid environment. Their unique abilities and multi-target damage potential make them a valuable asset, especially in encounters that require sustained DPS across multiple targets.

Shadow Priests: Essential Utility in Raids

Shadow Priests bring incredible utility, securing them a permanent raid spot. Their unique 5% spell haste buff is invaluable, especially in 10-man raids where such buffs are rare. Additionally, their Divine Hymn and Hymn of Hope are irreplaceable cooldowns that greatly assist in challenging encounters. In 25-man and even most 10-man raids, Shadow Priests’ utility is so impactful that their average DPS becomes a secondary concern, earning them a solid position in the A tier.

Rogues: PvE Viability Across All Specs

In Cataclysm, Rogues gain PvE viability for all three specs, a refreshing change. Although Assassination was the most common choice in PTR sessions, Sims place all three specs near the top in DPS. However, Subtlety Rogues may remain rare for now, and in my experience, Rogues typically ranked around 6th to 10th on most fights.

AoE and Utility for Rogues

When it comes to AoE, Rogues have powerful options. While Fan of Knives is a crowd favorite, Combat Rogues particularly excel with their Blade Flurry cleave. Each Rogue spec also brings distinct and valuable buffs to the raid, like a 4% physical damage boost, along with essential abilities such as Kick and Expose Armor, making Rogues versatile assets in any raid composition.

Rogues: Strong Position with Three Viable Specs

The verdict for Rogues is promising in this expansion, with three viable specs to choose from. It’s an excellent time to be playing a Rogue, not only because of the new legendary weapons but also because of their solid DPS and utility. This earns Rogues a secure spot in the A tier.

Warriors: Arms Spec Dominates in Cataclysm

Also in the A tier, we have Warriors, where the new Arms rotation introduces abilities like Colossus Smash and buffs like Inner Rage. Arms Warriors deliver immense damage, pushing Fury to the side as the dominant Warrior spec in Cataclysm. With impressive single-target and AoE capabilities, Arms Warriors are exceptionally strong.

Warrior AoE Power

Warriors continue their tradition of exceptional AoE with abilities like Sweeping Strikes, Whirlwind, and Cleave, giving Arms Warriors the tools to top the AoE damage meters consistently. They are positioned as a reliable choice for any raid that requires sustained AoE damage output.

Warrior Utility and Overall Value

In terms of utility, Warriors face significant overlap with other classes, although they have valuable tools like Pummel for interrupts and Taunt for controlling trash. However, utility is not their primary draw in Cataclysm, where maximizing damage is often the priority. Warriors secure their spot in the A tier primarily due to their powerful DPS output.

Warlocks: High Damage Blasters

Also ranked in the A tier, Warlocks bring some of the highest damage potential across single-target and AoE scenarios. Their diverse spell kit and powerful abilities allow them to contribute significantly to the raid’s overall damage output, making them a top choice for any team aiming to optimize DPS.

Warlocks: High Damage and Unique Utility

On the PTR, Warlocks, especially in Demonology, stood out with significant DPS. A major factor is the Demon Soul buff, which even introduces pet twisting to maximize damage output. Affliction Warlocks benefit from Soul Swap, making them highly effective in two-target fights—something Cataclysm offers frequently. In terms of AoE, Demonology Warlocks excel with abilities like Felstorm from their Felguard, Shadowflame, and Hellfire, while Affliction Warlocks can spam Seed of Corruption.

Warlock Utility

Warlocks bring unique utility, including the 5% crit bonus from Shadow and Flame, a buff that only they or Mages can provide, solidifying Warlocks as essential in raid compositions. Additionally, they offer Healthstones, which are particularly valuable in 10-man raids. With top-tier damage and rare buffs, Warlocks are vital for both 10- and 25-man raids. Though they slightly fall behind the absolute top classes, they secure a strong position in the A tier.

Death Knights: Dominating DPS with Unholy Spec

Starting off the S tier, we have Death Knights, with Unholy being the dominant DPS spec. Unholy Death Knights consistently topped the meters in my PTR testing, excelling even in single-target encounters. For AoE, they dominate by spreading diseases, casting Death and Decay, and using Blood Boil, making them reliable choices for trash and cleave fights alike.

Death Knight Utility

As for utility, Death Knights don’t bring much unique support to the raid, but their damage output alone makes them a top-tier pick. With powerful AoE and consistent single-target damage, Death Knights prove themselves as one of the most dependable options for maximizing DPS in Cataclysm.

Death Knight Utility and Value in Raids

The utility Death Knights bring is often replicated by other classes, but their new Battle Res is invaluable, particularly in 10-man raids, and a great asset in dungeons. The verdict on Death Knights is clear: they are essential for 10-man raids and one of the most stackable classes for 25-man raids. Whether you bring one or four, they’re a must-have, securing their place in the A tier.

Shamans in the S Tier: Consistent High DPS

Moving into the S tier, we have Shamans, a class that consistently outperforms others in Cataclysm raids. Elemental Shamans, in particular, excel with an incredibly simple rotation—Flame Shock, Lightning Bolt, and Lava Burst—that makes their high DPS seem effortless. Additionally, their totems and buffs, like Lightning Shield, add to their team utility.

Elemental Shaman: Strong Burn Phase and AoE Potential

One of the most challenging aspects of dealing with Elemental Shamans is their tendency to surge ahead in the burn phase, thanks to powerful cooldowns like Fire Elemental Totem. In AoE situations, Elemental Shamans shine with Chain Lightning, which hits so hard that they often dominate the damage meters. For other DPS classes, like Fire Mages, this can be frustrating, as Elemental Shamans frequently climb the ranks with ease.

Enhancement Shaman Comparison

The choice to bring Enhancement Shamans is harder to justify due to their lower DPS compared to Elemental, similar to the Fury versus Arms Warrior debate. Although Enhancement provides its own strengths, Elemental remains the go-to Shaman spec for maximizing DPS in Cataclysm.

Elemental Shaman: Reliable Damage and Utility

When playing flawlessly, even after using all cooldowns, Elemental Shamans often still edge out other classes in DPS. However, as with many Cataclysm classes, their buffs overlap with others, and their biggest utility, Bloodlust, can also be provided by Mages. One unique exception is Elemental Oath, which might be missing in certain 10-man setups. Elemental Shamans’ utility largely stems from their consistent, high damage output and Wind Shear interrupt.

The Verdict on Shamans

Shamans offer straightforward gameplay with exceptional DPS, making them highly appealing in PuG (Pick-up Group) raids where stacking them can be advantageous. For players looking to top the meters effortlessly, Shamans are a solid choice, securing them a strong place in the S tier.

Hunters: Survival as the Dominant Spec

Next, let’s discuss Hunters. Among all the specs, only Survival Hunters consistently appeared in PTR sessions during Cho’gall and Onyxia fights. While Marksmanship Hunters may be stepping back in Cataclysm, Beast Mastery still holds some potential. However, Survival remains the most reliable option for maximizing Hunter DPS.

Limitations of Survival Hunter

The main downside of Survival Hunters is their Sniper Training talent, which rewards stationary positioning, limiting their mobility and making it difficult to achieve simulator-predicted DPS highs.

AoE Potential for Survival Hunters

In AoE scenarios, Survival Hunters shine with abilities like Explosive Shot, Multi-Shot, and Explosive Trap, offering strong AoE damage that resembles their playstyle in Season of Discovery. This solidifies their utility in fights requiring sustained multi-target damage output.

Seas of Discovery and Hunter Utility

It almost feels like Blizzard crafted Seas of Discovery to nudge players into Cataclysm. Call it a conspiracy, but there’s something to it! Hunters, as usual, benefit from utilities like Ice Trap, which can be invaluable for controlling certain fights and protecting healers from taking too much damage.

Beast Mastery Hunters and Raid Buff Flexibility

Beast Mastery (BM) Hunters have a place in Cataclysm as well. They can provide nearly any raid buff, such as Bloodlust and Blessing of Kings. While their DPS is lower than Survival Hunters, they could still be a worthwhile addition in a desperate 25-man raid setup.

Verdict on Hunters

With a straightforward rotation and reliable top-tier damage for both single-target and AoE, Hunters serve as the backbone of any serious heroic raid. This versatility and consistency secure them a solid place in the S tier.

Mages: The Kings of DPS

Wrapping up the top DPS rankings, we have Mages. For single-target encounters, Fire Mages are unmatched in both power and enjoyment. In Phase One, abilities like Combustion and Hot Streak make Fire Mages feel exhilarating and allow them to overshadow Arcane Mages entirely.

AoE Capabilities of Fire Mages

For AoE, Fire Mages dominate with Combustion spreading through Fire Blast’s Impact, producing incredible damage. Living Bomb also adds a strong multi-target element. However, it’s worth noting that Fire Mages’ power does require careful timing and positioning to maximize their effectiveness in high-pressure raid environments.

Fire Mages: High DPS with Some Limitations

As a Fire Mage, I wasn’t always the top damage dealer due to the class’s reliance on cooldowns and RNG. Don’t be surprised if that Elemental Shaman occasionally takes the top spot, as Fire Mage performance can be hit or miss depending on critical procs and timing.

Utility of Fire Mages

Fire Mages bring valuable utility with Critical Mass, one of only two classes able to provide this crucial debuff. Additionally, they can offer Bloodlust, making them incredibly versatile in raids. This combination of damage and utility is a significant advantage in any raid setup.

Verdict: Fire Mages as the Ultimate S Tier Class

Fire Mages are highly stackable, effective at nearly every aspect of DPS, and reign as the kings of phase one DPS in Cataclysm. They undeniably hold the ultimate position in the S tier, making them a top choice for any serious raid composition.
