Freya: Overwatch’s Newest Strong DPS Hero

Freya, Overwatch‘s newest and strongest DPS hero, has gained popularity among players. Spending over 50 in-game hours playing her has allowed me to reach the top 50 on DPS. Uncovering some secrets about Freya that many players are unaware of, I’ll be sharing these insights and providing tips, tricks, and gameplay commentary to enhance your skills with her.

Her primary fire, the Revdraw Crossbow, offers the option to single fire or hold to shoot. Opting to hold the fire button is advisable due to its fast fire rate, which works effectively as a tracking weapon. However, extended shooting will increase the weapon spread, reducing accuracy at long distances. While her primary fire may seem underwhelming compared to other heroes, her secondary fire, Take Aim, is a game-changer. Activating this ability slows Freya down, allowing her to launch a high-damage explosive bolt. This ability serves as her poke tool and a win condition in 1v1 situations. Combining a scoped shot with a primary fire or two scoped shots forms her key combos. Noteworthy is the slow-motion state during scoping, which can boost her jumping height significantly. Moreover, this state mitigates boops, aiding in survival during environmental hazards or disrupting enemy attacks.

Delving into Freya’s first ability, Quick Dash, triggers a swift movement in the direction she is heading while resetting Take Aim. This mobility skill, coupled with her dual dash ability, provides her with exceptional maneuverability. Mastering the art of B-hopping with her dashes enhances her mobility, offering a tactical advantage in engagements. Additionally, activating dash without directional input lifts Freya vertically, although its practicality is limited compared to a standard jump maneuver. Understanding these nuances of her abilities is crucial for maximizing Freya’s potential in battles.

Freya’s Abilities Breakdown

But if we jump and at the peak of the jump input dash, now you’re getting some height. Even more so with a double dash. Remember that thing I talked about earlier with scope jumping? Yep. You throw that into the mix and you’re going even higher. The simple way of doing this is to scope, quickly, jump, and at the peak of that jump, dash. Then at the peak of that dash, you can dash again. Remember that because it’ll be important in another minute or so, too.

The second effect of her dash ability is that it resets explosive bolts. So basically, scope shot, dash, scope shot, dash, scope shot, and you got some really good burst damage. You’re going to want to get used to doing this because it basically increases your chance of hitting those breadandbut combos I talked about earlier. It also just looks cool.

Freya’s next ability is called updraft. This ability launches her up. That’s it. Not very complicated. My tip for this ability is to use it with respect for cover. As fun as it is to fly out in the open, you’ll notice doing this versus better players leaves you with more scenic views of a spawn room than desired. So, hug walls and when trying to scale a short height, go lower with this ability. Or alternatively, just use vertical scope dashes. And on that same thought, yes, scope jumping works really well with this ability. For reference, a normal jump updraft gets you about yay high, whereas a scope jump scope updraft gets you to the top of this building.

So, now I’ve mentioned scope jumping and how to use it with abilities, but I may not have explained that you can reach the skybox with it and stay there indefinitely. Once you’ve mastered all the previously mentioned stuff, you just got to juggle take aim and cool downs and you’ll be getting montage clips from the top of Leang Tower in no time. More often than not, touching the skybox is a flex rather than a tactical advantage, especially since shooting a scope shot kicks you out of slow-mo. But the scouting, turbo height, and early damage can be valuable. So, my advice is to try and go for it during downtime and not midfights.

Ultimate Ability: Bolshot

Let’s talk about the last ability in her kit, her ultimate ability, bolshot. It’s kind of complicated to explain, but it’s not a very complicated ultimate. I’ll start by explaining what happens on a miss. Missing means it hits a floor or wall near an enemy, but not actually the enemy. In this event, enemies in range are slowed, take a little damage over time, and then it explodes and deals some burst damage.

Missing is bad, but can sometimes get value, kind of like a pulse bomb. Now, if the ultimate directs an enemy, it does everything that missing does, except it also deals impact damage and strongly pulls all other enemies in range, kind of like a graviton surge. Oh, and it also hinders the person directed, meaning they can’t use movement abilities for a short period of time. Something else worth noting about her ultimate is that while casting it, it gives her a moment of slow-mo, just like her secondary fire does. The ultimate also farms faster than most heroes, especially thanks to her bounty hunting passive, which grants ult charge after three final blows. The best use I found for her ult is to just use it as often as possible. You can use it to punish an aggressive tank or to get a surprise kill on the flank or just in a regular fight against enemies who don’t have cooldowns to dodge it. Just to name some examples, a Moira that just faded in, a doomfist out of meteor strike or flanking, those onen zens are free99.

Freya perks. Everyone wants to know which ones are the best. First, we have Frostbolts. Hitting an enemy with three of these slows them by 20% for 2 seconds. This perk is solid and even more so versus easy to hit tanks with no way to block them. Her other minor perk, Tracking Instinct, reveals critical health enemies. If you’re asking me, Tracking Instinct, clears, and it’s not even close. Like I said earlier in this guide, Freya’s primary fire is for cleanup. And the difference frost arrows makes in most duels is negligible. The combo kills reduced health heroes before it matters.

And versus normal health heroes, it applies after three arrows. But does that really matter when the fourth arrow kills? Best use case is if the target is getting healed or if a tank is out of position. But tracking instinct, on the other hand, applies every time you hit a secondary fire on a squishy. Having wall hacks on low HP targets gives free kills and just a huge advantage in 1v ons. This perk is S tier and I recommend picking it nine times out of 10.

Moving on to her major perks, we have relentless barrage. Direct hits with take aim refunds for bolts. This perk is good, but once again, the other perk is just better. Ready to hunt gives Freya a free use of quick dash after using her updraft ability. It’s quite literally free mobility and damage. This lets her be more offensive, defensive, and gets her out of spawn quicker. Personally, I pick this perk every time.

So, here’s a question for you guys. What makes Freya stronger than most DPS?

Freya’s Unique Playstyle

It’s not just her damage. Although dash arrowing tanks is just as effective as a long-range fan, the hammer, there’s Something bigger that sets her apart. What removes her from the crowd is how flexible her movement is, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since most of her kit is just movement. With that in mind, the best way to take advantage of this movement is to use it to take unexpected angles, flank and bait chases, but never get caught. This hero, in my opinion, is best played like a Far Echo.

Keep range, control the sides of the maps, and sometimes you might have to duel for it, so play it smart. Her strength isn’t in a fair, grounded cookie clicker battle. It’s in being the peek-ab-oo world champ. Shoot and hide until you land the skill shot and then go for the cleanup.

Okay, philosophy mumbo jumbo out of the way. I’ll give you guys a quick playbyplay that should tie together everything that you learned here. This is a GM game. It’s not my best game. It’s not my worst game. It’s just an average game that I feel shows a lot of the fundamentals of Freya. So, as the game starts here, I want to go top left because there’s the safety of high ground. It’s also just good since Freya has no fall-off damage. I quickly notice that red team is going far elephant side, so I reposition for a better angle. I’m softening up the tank as much as I can.

That way, he can’t take space. Unfortunately, we lose our tracer, so we have to get ready to back up. Something you’ll notice is I’m spending a lot of time floating and just shooting from these really weird angles. You’re going to want to do that a lot on this hero because that’s just what she does best. We’re waiting for the regroup, so I’m just poking and playing around my cooldowns. Going over the roof is an unexpected angle and a quick way to high ground. If I don’t have an easy shot on a squishy, I’m just shooting the tank. I notice my Tracer shooting Their Anna, so I try to capitalize off of her distraction. Their Freya sees me, so I have no choice but to shoot her. I end up getting lucky and catching the enemy Anna here. Lucio‘s zooming past, so I just clean him up. Notice that throughout this whole interaction, the only person that gets a shot at me is the enemy Freya, and that’s just because it’s hard for the enemy Tracer or Lucio to get up to me on this high ground.

Strategic Gameplay Decisions

In this scenario, the player showcases a high-level understanding of Freya‘s mechanics and playstyle. By constantly seeking advantageous positions and utilizing the hero’s mobility, they effectively control the pace of engagements. The emphasis on maintaining distance and outmaneuvering opponents highlights the importance of strategy over brute force. Through calculated movements and precise target selection, the player maximizes Freya’s potential, turning seemingly unfavorable situations into opportunities for success. This demonstration serves as a valuable lesson in tactical decision-making and adaptability within the game’s dynamic environment.

Improving Aiming in Overwatch

And if they shoot me as I’m floating past the high ground, I could always just go back to it. I end up getting potato aim here and have a pretty embarrassing death to this tracer, but it is what it is. Aiming in Overwatch is kind of hard sometimes.

I’m coming back from spawn, so I don’t have the best angle on the enemy team. Ideally, I would just go back to top left, but we have advantage here, so I’m just trying to get my own. Definitely got to watch out for Tracers. It’s one of Freya’s hardest matchups. Reason being, a scoped headshot doesn’t really come close to killing her. It’s better to just go for hip fires and hope to force recall. We forced recall, so it gives me an opportunity to play a little more aggressive.

I see the enemy rematch walking in, so that means I got to back up or I might get dove. We lose a player, so rather than backing up or just shooting the tank, I look for an opportunity to sneak shots at the backline. I end up in a 1v one with the enemy Freya, but I’m not comfortable taking the 1v one unless I have more cool downs. I end up ulting the first person I see. It happens to be the Ram, and it happens to be a little bit early, but it definitely contributed to him dying here.

Tracer is chasing me here, so I juke her with a little vertical hop and then I click on her head. There‘s downtime here, so I use my cooldowns to try and farm while the enemy team’s regrouping. They accidentally nano ram here, which is pretty funny. And again, I’m on high ground here. I see him rotating. I make sure to pump in damage. He’s forced to pop his old just to survive.

Enemy Freya gets a pop shot on me, and I have no clue where she’s at, so I’m just moving. She ends up trying to chase for the kill, gets jked, and my carry kills her. I whip some shots on the Moira, and I’m not really comfortable taking the 1v one without the health pack, so I just reposition.

Because I don’t take the ego duel, I end up catching their tracer. I see their Moira with the critical perk, so I look for the cleanup on her. At the start of this next map, I end up going point side because I know they might have a trace here that goes here, and I need to mark it. If I don’t mark it, we’ll end up getting sandwiched later. I noticed my hazard walking up, so I look for another angle.

Analysis of Freya Gameplay

I heard their Freya shoot, so I’m keeping an eye out. My hazard also backs up, so I start to back up. I see my Tracer was just left side, so I go to press it. I miss my shots on the enemy Tracer, so I just leave. It’s only a fight I need to force if I have an advantage.

I poke at the enemy Zarya, outrange her, and then go for some free shots on the enemy squishies. It forces fade, and because of that, my Tracer is able to push up and get a kill. I see my hazard pressing the enemy Zarya, so I reposition so that her team can’t shoot me. She gets really low and they can’t afford to shoot me right now, so I just all in for the kill.
