Overtime: What is overtime in Rocket League?

In Rocket League, when the match ends in a tie, the game goes into Overtime—a sudden death phase where the clock keeps running until one team scores. It works a lot like the “Golden Goal” rule in soccer. This rule applies to all standard game modes, so every match ends with a clear winner, no matter what.
Why Overtime Feels So Intense
Overtime is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the game. Every move matters, and one small mistake can instantly cost your team the match. That tension makes it incredibly fun to watch at the pro level, especially when both teams are evenly matched and anything can happen at any moment.
What Should You Do During Overtime?
First things first—stay calm. The pressure can mess with your focus, so take a second to breathe and settle your nerves. Playing stressed out leads to rushed decisions and avoidable errors. If you’re in a 2v2 or 3v3, help your teammates stay composed too. Tilted players are way more likely to throw the game.
Once you’re focused, shift into smart, patient gameplay. Defense comes first. Don’t leave the goal wide open chasing the ball. If you’re taking a shot, only go for a follow-up if you’re absolutely sure you’ll beat the other team to it. If there’s any doubt, fall back and be ready to respond to a counterattack.
In team modes, always keep at least one person near the net. Use demos when you can to take out opponents, but don’t get so aggressive that you put yourself at risk of getting demoed in return.
