How to Rediscover Your Love for Destiny 2

Although some of them may be asking out of genuine curiosity, many others are likely gamers who used to love Destiny but have found themselves with a bad taste in their mouth or simply lost the fire they once had. Well, guess what? You’re here reading a Destiny 2 content creator who makes guies for players who are returning to the game. So, that tells me you’re at least thinking about giving the game that myself and so many others love another chance.

Today, I’m going to lay out five steps to help you fall in love with Destiny 2. And be sure to stick around for step number five, ’cause it could get me in big trouble with my community.

Step 1: Embrace the Newness

Play like it’s your first time again. Whether you’re a Destiny veteran with hundreds of hours under your belt or you’re flying to the tower for the first time, it’s important to remember that Destiny is a game that many of us use to relieve stress and as a hobby to decompress from real life. Make the intentional choice to play in ways that are fun first and foremost. If you’re trying to find your love for Destiny, make sure to just log in, pick a subclass and weapons you like to use, and go explore. Visit a destination or play through story missions that you’ve never experienced before. Bonus points if you can avoid spoilers or reading others’ opinions on that content so it feels fresh and exciting to you.

Step number two: set goals that feel achievable. Destiny 2 is in its seventh year, and even though some of the earliest content has been sunset, there is still an overwhelming amount of content in the game that can be played at any time. This can cause even the most seasoned veteran to be stumped on what to prioritize when logging in. If you feel overwhelmed by options, your best bet is to avoid the trap of doing everything at once. Simply focus on one portion of the game and follow that until its end. Maybe you want to focus on the most recent campaign or seasonal story content.

Great. Go chase that quest line. Maybe you want to log in to play with friends. Awesome. Shoot them a text or a DM and see if they have another slot on their fire team. Or maybe you just want to chase down a specific exotic weapon or to try out a new subclass kit. Whatever your purpose for playing, if you feel like you are accomplishing a goal every time you log in, you’ll provide yourself with a positive feedback loop and you’ll be getting better at the game.

Step number three: focus on current content first. If you’re trying to find your love for Destiny 2, make sure to focus on current content first and work your way backward. By completing the most recent content, you’ll put yourself on the fast track to developing the most relevant builds for the modern game. Speaking of relevant builds, make sure you read the descriptions of the different perks on your seasonal artifact.

Oftentimes, you can get an idea of what builds may be effective in the current season based on the tools that Bungie has put in our toolkit. Over the years, Bungie has established that they will use the seasonal artifact along with buffs and nerfs to our gear to shake up the top loot, perks, and subclasses inside of Destiny 2. It’s obvious that they really want the game to feel diverse season over season. And this is one area that Bungie always knocks out of the park. The other positive effect of the shifting meta is Bungie is able to provide us with new top-tier weapons on a regular cadence.

Rediscovering Your Passion for Destiny 2

If you’ve taken a long break from the game, it’s easy to search YouTube for videos like “best weapons in Destiny” and then feel defeated when you find out that they’re using a gun you can no longer get. Just remember, there’s almost always an option that’s available in the current game that can match or surpass the old gear another Guardian may be using.

Step number four: enjoy the journey you’re on. As someone who’s put over 10,000 hours into Destiny 2, I find myself feeling nostalgic for the days where I had what felt like a million exotic weapons to pursue, endless triumphs to obtain, and a world full of secrets to discover. It’s an understandable feeling to see that person who is in the tower and they just hit Guardian rank 11 and think, “Man, I wish that were me.”

But be sure to use those thoughts as fuel to reignite your passion for Destiny instead of fuel to burn out in pursuit of an arbitrary number next to your Guardian’s name. It’s okay to not have all the best loadouts, to not have all the best gear unlocked, to not know every optimal strategy for every situation. These are all things that can and will be developed over time. But take a moment to appreciate that you’re at the early stages of a journey that some of us have been on for literal years. We’d give anything to experience it all again for the first time.

Now, the final step is one that a lot of Guardians might not be excited to hear, but I feel like I need to say it anyways. Step number five: Destiny is a game that is meant to be played with others. Now, I can already hear you saying, “Saxs, LFG is a cesspool of toxicity, and I always find the worst of the worst in the community, or I’m too shy and awkward to talk to other people. What if they perceive me?” It’s time to take a leap of faith and find people to play with. Whether that be through Discord, a clan recruitment post on Reddit, or simply just use the fireteam finder that Bungie has added to the game.

Here’s a few key things to remember about LFGing in Destiny. Players of all skill levels use LFG at different times for a wide range of reasons. Make sure to specify the type of Guardians you’d like to play with when you make or you join an LFG post. Utilize the filters available in Fireteam Finder to find the perfect team for whatever activity you’re hoping to take on. Start in low-stakes activities before moving on to more endgame content. Set up a pose for activities such as lower-level Nightfalls, seasonal activities, or just casually grinding out ranks in Iron Banner and allow yourself to find your voice in a fireteam setting.

One barrier to LFGing that people often forget is how hard it can be to get your audio set up properly so you can hear the fireteam and the game at the same time. And if you attempt to set all of this up during a raid or a dungeon, that is a recipe for frustration and failure. Find ways to offer value to those you play with to garner goodwill and good vibes. For example, if the team is looking for someone to run a well of radiance, offer to be this person so that you can start the session on a good foot.

There’s nothing more awkward than the silence that rings out when someone asks, “So, who’s running Divinity?” Clearly communicate your strengths and weaknesses to your teammates so they know what to expect. It does not make sense for you to offer to run Tether Hunter when you barely even logged onto this character before. Let everyone know how you feel you can support the team and find ways to build the team around each other’s strengths.
