Ultimate Class Picking Guide for Mists of Pandaria Classic

Hello, Guys, Librarian Husky here. In Mists of Pandaria, selecting the right class is crucial for your gameplay experience. Comparing retail statistics with classic beta and private servers can help you make an informed decision. Understanding the popularity of each class can also influence your choice.
Choosing Your Class in Mists of Pandaria
Historically, certain classes like mages and warlocks excelled in different phases of the game. However, with the evolution of the game, the performance of classes has shifted. For instance, hunters are currently dominating the meters in the Mists of Pandaria beta due to various factors like player skill and updated talents. Despite this, classes like death knights, shamans, rogues, and warriors are also performing well in DPS roles.
The disciplined priest stands out as the top healer in phase one, offering significant single-target and AoE healing capabilities. While historical data from original Mists of Pandaria suggests certain classes excelled as healers, the current meta may vary. Ultimately, player skill and understanding of class mechanics are vital in maximizing your performance regardless of class choice.
Class Performance and Meta Shifts
Analyzing data from private servers reveals that resto shamans and disciplined priests shine in phase one with specific patch 5.4 talents. This demonstrates how the game meta can evolve based on player preferences and class adjustments.
As you navigate through the diverse class options in Mists of Pandaria, consider your playstyle, team composition, and personal preferences to ensure an enjoyable and successful gaming experience. Remember that while certain classes may excel in specific scenarios, every class has the potential to contribute effectively to your team’s success.
Stay informed about class updates and meta shifts to adapt your gameplay strategy accordingly.

Class Performance in Mr. Pandaria Classic
So what we will also be using in Mr. Pandaria Classic. But if you pay attention, then rests are honestly not that far away from both of these classes. So what about the DPS locks? Well here arms warriors are performing the best, followed by unholy death knight, enhancement shaman, rogue, and then frost mage, and survival hunters. So survival hunters are not top one, but top six. How come it’s like this? Well, there’s many explanations. The data on private servers could be way different compared to how it will be in Mr. Pandaria Classic. People might also have played those classes for a lot longer compared to people who have just started the beta. On top of this, this is also DPS rankings with phase one best in slot gear. So not the gear we’re using on the beta right now, which is pre- rate.
Now, that I’ve already showed you the best DPS and healers, at least what we believe will be, and I will also show you the best tanks. In phase one, it seems like brew master monks and death knights are going to be the best performing with their cooldowns against the different mechanics. And then comes warriors, peladins, and guardian druids. I’ve been testing dungeon farming and raiding myself on a brew master monk. And yeah, it is actually pretty damn amazing.
You have so many different cooldowns you can use to prevent different mechanics from doing a lot of damage. And yeah, when I’m raiding, I also like to have an off tank as a death knight or protection warrior. Don’t forget this is just data from phase one raiding. It’s going to be a lot of phases in Mr. Fenderia and some classes is really depending on getting hit capped, expertise kept or simply just having a lot of crit or mastery.
And for some classes, this is not a possibility in phase one, which is why they will slowly perform a lot better and at the end Maybe even outperform what we’re doing the best in phase one, which is why you should any day just stick to whatever you like.
Maybe you have a character you started in the beginning of classic or Burning Crusade. Why not continue to play that one if you enjoy it instead of focusing too much on becoming the best tanker, heal, or DPS class? Because the most important thing is simply just to enjoy the game and play whatever you like.
With all of this being said, then I’ve also been pretty curious about the popularity of each individual class. Therefore, I’ve scanned who on the beta, but also looked into old data about the most played class. If we’re looking at the old data, then paladin were the most famous class throughout all of Mist of Pandaria, together with hunters, druids, death knights, and at the beginning of the prep patch, also mages.
Choosing the Right Class for You
But more and more people were slowly swapping from mages into other classes. And during the last patch, paladins were no longer the most famous class. These were instead hunters, followed by paladin, death knight, druid, mages, and warriors. For those of you enjoying PvP, I’ve also found some old data about arena ratings at 1,800 rating and above. And here, priests were always top one. So, most priests got to 1,800 rating compared to any other class. And then we had shamans, death knights, druids, and mages.

All right, so what class should you be playing? The benefit of choosing a monk is that everyone else will also be starting at level one. So if you have had a long break or this is going to be the first time you’re going to be playing classic, then you won’t be behind compared to anyone else. Another benefit is that you can play this during the prep patch and get it ready before Mr. Fandaria. You can play as tank, healer, and DPS. So you can pretty much play as every single role in the game, just not as a range DPS.
For someone who has also been playing classic for a long time, it’s going to be refreshing to finally play a new class because it has been a while since we got the death knight in Wrath of the Lich King. There’s of course also a couple of downsides. If you’re playing Brew Master, yeah, then you’re probably welcomed in raids as a tank. But if you’re playing misw weaver healer or DPS wind walker, well then there’s probably not going to be as many people who would like to bring you as it seems like from the data that other classes are going to perform better.
And I got to be honest, in classic people are honestly minmaxing. And if we’re looking into the PVP perspective, then barely any monks made it to 1800 rating. But then again, we got to remember monks were also not that played in Mr. Fandaria. So, it could be a lot different this time around. Next up, the death knight. Be aware if you’re going to play this class, you will always be playing as a mele DPS, no matter if you’re playing trust or unholy. And as a tank, you’ll of course also be in me range. However, the benefit of choosing this class is that they’re so insane. As a tank, you’re going to be one of the best tanks in phase one. And it seems like they’re also performing so well as Frost and Unholy. Yeah, it’s not like you’re being forced to play as Frost.
Class Specializations Overview
If you wish to do damage, you can very well also play as unholy. So, you can play this class and not be forced to play one specific specialization. When it comes to PVP, they’re also fairly easy to climb to high rating. Just find yourself a decent healer, for example, a discipline priest. Talking about the priest, let’s cover this as the next class. So, I’ve already mentioned this a couple of times, but in my opinion, discipline is the best healer in PvE. As we’re progressing through the different phases, you will at some point also be able to solo heal tinman raids.
Why? Well, because of your huge absorb shields, a ton of AoE healing, and also many different things that will benefit the raid when there’s a lot of damage to been taken. And when it comes to PVP, like you can see right here, you can swap your health with another friendly player. Pretty insane compared to Cataclysm, you can also turn invisible and even run and cast penance at the same time. These things are, however, gated behind a talent and a glyph, but it makes the overall game play so much more fun compared to any of the other expansions.
Shadow Priests in PvE and PvP
What about shadow? Well, in PVE they’re still pretty decent, but definitely not going to be the best throughout all of the expansion. In PVP, they’re insanely gods, especially if you combine this class together with, for example, a rogue or a mage.
And the fact that we’re able to pretty much constantly increase our movement speed, so we can’t be catched, being able to turn invisible, and having a lot better mobility makes the class a lot different to play, but in a good way. Another class that also becomes a lot more fun to play, at least in my opinion, is the rogue.
This time around, you’re getting more abilities that makes it even better in arena situations such as AoE stealth and also increased movement speed all the time. In one versus one situations, you’re also doing insane burst. And like you can see right here, later on, you will also be able to be on top of the damage meters. And throughout all of the phases, rogues are actually performing pretty decent in PvE. So, it is definitely not a bad choice to choose if you wish to be on top of the damage meters.
I do believe there will also be a way higher demand for this class, at least in fiveman dungeons, when you have the possibility to turn all party and raid members invisible for 15 seconds as long as they’re within this circle. Well, then it’s also going to be such a huge benefit, especially when you’re going to farm your pre-rit bis gear where you would like to skip a lot of trash creatures and go directly to a bus. And yet another benefit is that it will increase the damage taken by the creatures by 5%.
So bringing a rogue is definitely not going to be a bad choice. And earlier I also talked about increased movement speed all the time. This is going to be through a talent called burst of speed. It will increase your movement speed by 70% for a short duration, but you can spam this as long as you have energy. In addition to this, when you use this ability, you will also remove movement slowing effects.
Rogue and Shaman Changes
The rogue will undergo significant changes, along with many other classes. I’ve detailed all class changes in the description below. As for shamans, PvP enhancement gameplay will see substantial alterations. With new level 90 cooldowns and improved gear, you could potentially deal immense damage and even eliminate opponents with well-timed procs. In PvE scenarios, shamans excel, often ranking in the top five for damage output from phase one onwards, provided players are skilled.
Elemental shamans follow a similar trend, allowing players to remain loyal to their chosen specialization throughout various phases. Opting for elemental initially offers flexibility, as gear can transition to restoration specialization if desired. Historical data shows shamans excelling as healers in 25-man raids. Enhanced mobility allows lightning bolt casting while on the move, with the level 90 ascendance cooldown granting unique abilities based on specialization – enhancing melee attacks for enhancement, improving chain lightning for elemental, and boosting AoE healing for restoration.
Warrior Performance in the Expansion
Exciting prospects await Warriors in the upcoming expansion, particularly for arms specialization, which showcases remarkable performance even in phase one content. In a 25-man heroic progression scenario, an arms warrior can potentially secure the top spot, a departure from the dominance of fury warriors in Cataclysm. This expansion offers warriors the flexibility to excel in both arms and fury specializations, granting players the freedom to choose based on personal preference rather than performance constraints.
The streamlined gameplay eliminates the need to switch stances for various abilities, enhancing the overall player experience. Warriors will experience significant changes and gain new abilities, making it advisable to review dedicated warrior content for a comprehensive understanding. Notable improvements include the addition of second win, providing passive healing when below 35% health, rendering warriors highly durable in one-on-one encounters and arenas alike.
Warlock Class Overview
But when we’re getting so many new skills and abilities, then it will also take a lot of practice to master this class. So it is worth the time because at the end you will end up with a class that is going to be so much fun to play in PvP and even in PvE. The biggest downside is probably that if you wish to play a protection, then you will probably not be invited into as many raids in the beginning compared to, for example, playing a monk tank or death knight. And this is because those two tanks are just performing better in phase one, at least from old beta and also what we are seeing on beta.
But for a more casual player, you shouldn’t really be worried because there will be plenty of people bringing a warrior tank even in phase one. Just be aware that as we’re progressing, warriors also become a lot stronger and at the end a lot of people will definitely bring you into a raid. Warlocks has been known for being a top damage dealer ever since Burning Crusade. And now we’re also getting a huge raid and party utility with demonic gateway.
A gateway you can use to transfer your character from one location to another. Therefore, the warlock also becomes a lot better in raid environments. Yeah, they already had health stones, soul stones, and many other things that improved the raid, but now we are having yet another ability. And when you combine this together with an amazing damage dealer, then you end up with a class that is going to be in high demand. If I have to point out a negative thing about the warlock, then it is definitely that you will have three specializations focusing on doing range damage. In other words, if you wish to play tank, healer, or mele DPS, well, then you basically also have to level up another character to 90.
Maybe there’s not even a need to level the other classes. I mean, if you wish just to be the best damage dealer in the game, why not just focus on one class then? And I mean, as you’re getting gear, you can always try out the other specializations because the gear you probably already have, you’ll most likely just be able to reforge and then use for other specializations. Warlock is not the only class that can only play as a DPS.

It’s also the same case as a hunter, but you won’t be casting spells. So, if you’re looking for another class that will only focus on being a DPS, but not be a caster, well, then the hunter might be the correct choice for you. In the beginning of this expansion, you will most likely also be the best DPS when people are going to dungeon farm and later on progress in normal raiding.
But as people progress and getting better gear, you will definitely have a lot more competition for reaching rank one DPS. On top of this, the hunter doesn’t bring a lot of benefits to a raid party. If we compare to, for example, the warlock with the soul stones, health stones, and also the money gateway, but it’s a fun class to play also, if you like to PvP, for example, with the new power shot where you can shoot people off the cliff and probably end up killing them due to fall damage.
The biggest benefit of choosing this class is that you can also play as whatever specialization you like. And this is no matter the phase as all of them are actually performing pretty decent. So it’s not like you will be forced to play survival in phase one, marksman in phase two, and later on beast master. No, you can choose whatever your play style fits. The last thing I would also like to point out is that if you make it to 2,200 rating in arenas, well then you will be able to get yourself a unique enchant, an enchant on your range weapon. Yeah, this is actually true and something that is just damn amazing for a hunter.
Mage: The Versatile Spellcaster
Now that I’m already talking about classes that can only play as a DPS, then let’s cover the last one, the mage that can play as arcane, frost, and fire. This is a class that has always been and will always be in high demand, no matter if you’re going to dungeon farm, raid,
The Three Mage Specializations
or engage in PvP combat. Mages bring versatility to any group with their ability to deal massive damage, crowd control enemies, and provide utility through spells like portals and food creation.
Mages can specialize in Arcane, frost, or fire magic, each offering a unique playstyle and strengths. Arcane mages excel at burst damage and mana management, frost mages focus on controlling enemies with slows and freezes, while fire mages unleash devastating pyroclasmic power.
Mana Management and Spell Rotation
One of the key challenges for mage players is mana management. Balancing the use of powerful spells with the need to conserve mana is crucial for sustained performance in longer fights. Understanding the optimal spell rotation for each specialization is essential for maximizing damage output and efficiency.
Mages also have access to a wide range of utility spells that can turn the tide of battle. From creating food and water for the group to casting portals for quick travel, mages provide invaluable support beyond their damage-dealing capabilities.
Remember, mastering the mage class requires practice and a deep understanding of each specialization’s strengths and weaknesses. Whether you prefer the explosive power of fire, the chilling control of frost, or the arcane mysteries, the mage offers a rewarding and dynamic gameplay experience.
